Dyson Spheres are a fun thing to think about. They're also virtually impossible to build simply due to the sheer amount of raw materials necessary. It would essentially destroy whatever solar system it is, on top of the fact that it would cause resonance issues with the outflow of radiation and solar wind of the star which would not only make construction difficult, but make it impossible to maintain once completed. Imagine trying to manually keep a lid on a pressure cooker. Good luck with that.

As I understand it, this was a complete success. They wanted to know if they could detect something with the predicted signature of Dyson sphere, and they detected seven stars that met the criteria. Whether they actually are Dyson spheres is irrelevant.
@andrewmalinowski6673
2 ай бұрын
First; ask the quetion. In this case; Could we detect signs of advanced societies without receiving a signal? If the detection of a possible megastructure could absorb the light and most of the heat from a parent star, then it's possible we could never communicate with them because they'd be unable to send/receive any signal through their shell. Going in with the presumption these are Dyson Spheres is like the meme; "I'm not saying it's aliens, but it's aliens" and leads into the belief we're looking for something that could be stellar debris or an ancient civilization and i nterpreting it as a "Dyson Sphere" just because we're getting ahead of ourselves

One thing to note. If the sample was 1 million stars the likelihood that any of those 7 stars is simply dying out is near zero. But the likelihood that any of those 7 stars had an object pass in front of them blocking their light is probably also near zero. You may not think others do, but they do. - Everyone thinks they're right. If they didn't they wouldn't hold those opinions. So when you find some information that contradicts what you think or what you know, I recommend you consider the following: - Consider the possibility that you are wrong. - Look for facts that contradict the facts that you know. You may only know half of the story. - Realise that you have bias and what your biases are. Realise that you might accept some facts and not others because you don't want your original opinion to be wrong. If you do that, then your opinion and the facts you gained are probably less biased than they were previously. But you're still biased.

I hypothesize that a ring would require less materials than a sphere but require higher technological advancement, simply because either shape would need to withstand the force of gravity trying to pull the sphere into the star itself. A sphere would be relatively easy to reinforce and it’s a nice symmetrical shape along any axis; a ring is just not as structurally sound, especially if forces are pulling it in opposite directions along the same axis. However, we’re talking about sci-fi here, so I guess it may be possible to put thrusters on each side of the ring to act against the forces of gravity as needed. And each individual thruster would fire only if that particular part of the ring starts to tilt due to gravity.

Maybe but if the volcano erupts like Mount St. Helens did those geothermal plants and everyone and everything in the surrounding area doesn't stand a chance. Since that energy is part of a volcano and no we CANNOT control that in anyway shape or form. NO we are NOT already there. That is the point he was making and it flew way over your head. Not to mention we have to start harvesting energy from earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, the sea in general just to name a few more energy sources of our ENTIRE (meaning the whole f'ing thing not just part or a fraction of it) planet to meet the requirements of a type 1 civilization. So again NO we are NOT already there.

Something I've always found strange about the idea of a Dyson sphere is like, if a planet put one around their sun, wouldn't that just be blocking out their own sun in the end? That seems like a terrible idea. It would have to be a structure around it to harvest energy but not block it out, or at least not block out the side that the planet is facing when its facing it.

There’s a very good reason universities and schools don’t teach STEM like the way Neil does. @@johnjames4834 Good point. I would argue Space / Time. To your point it takes time for intelligence to evolve. But to the formers point, because the universe is so large, and environments so different. Life somewhere else in the universe (space) is a also a product of different environmental factors. Which also determines evolution (other than time). I could be completely mistaken. But the exercise is fun, as it stretches the imagination.

As far as we know, extraterrestrials from other solar systems aren't zipping around as easily as we drive across town. Physics won't allow it. As for another species reaching sentience on Earth: we've found no signs of any, and we'd definitely have found indisputable traces of any previous high-tech human civilization that had destroyed itself.

The issue with the explanation that Dyson Swarms would be visible in the infrared spectrum is that certainly a K Type II civilization would have sufficient technology to capture, harness, and utilize the heat, too. If they've figured out how to capture, harness, and utilize the energy on hurricanes, volcanoes, and oceans of their home-world, it seems likely that capturing heat energy would be comparatively trivial.
@donny5318

possibly the stars energy is enough for these civilizations and they no longer care about the energy they once got from volcanos, hurricanes, etc, and heat.
@guywithrhodopsin
2 ай бұрын
But they can’t capture all of it unless they have technology way beyond what we can imagine. It’s not that they don’t try to capture the IR, it’s that some will escape anyway. With our current knowledge of physics I’m pretty sure it’s impossible for us to design a structure that doesn’t emit any radiation at all. Harnessing the energy of natural phenomena like volcanoes and earthquakes is easy compared to making an emissionless object.

It seems that a type II would allow the energy to still point at their planet, so as their planet orbited their sun and aligned with our telescopes, you would see a brief amount of light depending on how well their structure is constructed.
