@@woohooivan Sweden's culture is like that. They more or less live alone and prefer to be distant from each other. The social distancing part had very little to do with government. In regards to the mask part, they encouraged people to wear masks on public transport during peak hours only. So masks weren't mandatory anywhere else. It was encouraged to be socially distant or wear a mask during peak hours, but not punished if you didn't. And the thing with Sweden is that everyone who died with covid, whether they died because of it or not, was listed as a covid death. For example, if you went outside one day and got hit by a bus, but the previous day your covid test came out as positive, it would be listed as a covid death.

I think you are being too generous to other countries who have not weighed the collateral damage of their lockdowns at all. If someone seriously started to try to measure all of these things: 1) non-lethal mental health problems; 2) suicide; 3) drug and alcohol abuse; 4) domestic abuse; 5) hindered education; 6) economic impact; - my guess is they would quickly see what a horrible mistake the lockdowns are (this is just a list of things I have thought of off the top of my head, there are surely others I haven't though of). Add to this these somewhat measurable things, there are moral problems: 1) the infringement of civil liberties, perhaps never to be fully regained, 2) the censorship by governments, free press and big tech even in supposedly free nations, 3) the increased political friction (vaxxers vs anti-vaxxers; maskers vs anti-maskers, etc) in already fractured political countries like the US.

As a Swede I would like to point out two of my thoughts on this video: - Sweden has had something like "voluntary lockdown". People were encouraged to work from home and did to a very large extent. At my jobb we immediately got all the monitors and peripherals our staff needed to work from home and all but the warehouse staff and a couple of others have been at home for a year and a half. Even now when we have opened up we typically have less than 50% in the office on any given day. - Sweden has relatively high trust in the government and institutions, so people generally follow directives. Directives may not work as well in countries where this isn't true. - I think the psychological effects are a long way from being known and are likely worse in countries with harder lockdown, so it will take a long time before we fully know what this cost in human terms, but I think the Swedish model is probably a good choice for similar countries.. but probably not for all.
@CharlesLambert137
3 жыл бұрын
Excellent post, Jonas. Thanks for sharing! If the directives are reasonable, as you say they are in Sweden, it makes it much more likely that more/most people will follow them. For example, here in Alberta, Canada, I walk to a restaurant's front door, put on a mask, go in and show proof of vaccination (that doesn't prove that I don't have a large, infectious, viral load), get seated and take off the mask. I can sit there all day, sneeze, cough, talk, whatever, but if/when I get up from the table, I must put on a mask. Obviously, this has no basis in science yet if you don't do it you're in for a world of hurt. I do not believe our government because they consistently push this sort of nonsense. I've been thinking I may prefer life in Sweden... and not just for covid reasons.

The problem with our elderly care services was and still is the same. It mustn't cost anything. So a lot of temporary unqualified workers that works as much as they can, even when sick = spreading disease to their patients. There were cases were bosses forbade masks, and of course the mask shortage. Overall a perfect storm, with many elderly paying the price. But there is also one thing to consider: if you live in most of the homes for the elderly, you are statistically likely to die within a year, or even shorter. Statistics sucks when it's your parent and every day they're alive is good...

People ever wonder why the doctor did not pick Norway as an example from the Nordic region? Denmark, Norway and Finland, with a combined population of around 16.75 million, have recorded 4,331 deaths attributed to coronavirus as of Thursday (February 28, 2021, 259 per million). All three enforced lockdowns early on in the pandemic. Sweden, by contrast, has registered 12,798 deaths, and possesses a population 10.2 million, meaning it has a far higher death rate than its immediate neighbors (1,255 per million), according to Johns Hopkins University data.

It's because the Swedish constitution gives a lot of power to the institutions. Politicians are not allowed to tell the institutions what to do, or even have public opinions about what they do. This led to the response not getting political, and the health agency was seen as the leaders, while politicians stayed on the sidelines. During first wave last spring, every other country closed down and there was fear porn on every international media channel, yet Swedens health agency had 80% support from the public while going straight into the wave. Not that much higher than here and much lower than neighboring Denmark which is 72.2 and 75.9%. Difficulty in getting the vaccines? Vaccine hesitancy? I don't know about Sweden, but in Denmark where my daughter lives, their Covid pass that allows you entrance into indoor facilities without having to show a negative test done within 3 days is either to be vaccinated OR to have had Covid. Denmark does not require that those who have had Covid to get the vaccine in order to get the pass.

High schools and universities were closed and classes were held on line. All shops and restaurants had to limit the number of people who could come, restaurants closed early and all gatherings w more than 8 were "prohibited" We had a huge number of deaths in caring facilities for elderly, due to lack of routines and training. Sweden’s population is exceptionally healthy and happy. So, for a country that is more educated, healthier and less stressed overall, I’m not surprised that they are faring as well as they are. By comparison, countries like the United States and the United Kingdom have huge inequality in education, healthcare, quality of life, etc. you can see this playing out in the demographics of the populations of the United States in the UK. Those people who have historically had access to the worst education, the worst healthcare, the worst jobs that don’t pay anything and therefore the worst quality of life overall, are the ones who are dying. It's my understanding that Sweden simply followed the pandemic emergency planning protocols that all Western countries, including Canadian provinces and US states created after the SARS scare some 15 years ago. All of the other jurisdictions panicked in response to the massively incorrect covid death modelling by Niall Ferguson in early 2020 and threw out all their careful planning models based on years of research --all of which said that lockdown of the healthy population is ineffective -- and are in line with the Great Barrington Declaration.
@lwiful
3 жыл бұрын
I think that you are spot on, at least when listening to Dr Tegnell. And still it is Sweden that selected an "alternate" strategy in the debate when it is in fact everybody else, at least considering the agreed emergency planning protocols. But I would not say that Sweden did nothing. Public gatherings of more than 8 were banned. Only 4 in each group/table at a restaurant, restricted number of people in shops at any time based on floor area, masks in public transportation at rush hours, no campus education at universities etc. But no lockdown and exercising outside strongly encouraged.
@stupidas9466

Niall Ferguson's covid modelling has turned out to be remarkably accurate. If you don't think it is, than you are either ignorant of what it actually stated, are misinformed as to what has happened since, or are unable to understand the paper itself. (Or you could have a separate agenda, but i won't presume that.) The NPI paper of March 11, 2020 had modelling predictions based on combinations of a number of different mitigation strategies implemented, different percentages of compliance by the public, and different R values for the virus. A good example of the paper's accuracy is the death toll in the United States. It made different predictions leading up to mid 2021, which we are now able to look back in hindsight. Based on what mitigation strategies the US actually implemented, when the different areas did and did not, the compliance of the population, and what the transmission rate of the virus has basically turned out to be, a careful look at the modelling shows that under all these conditions Ferguson predicted the US could expect approximately 590,000 deaths as of June 30, 2021. Compare that to the reported 620,799 toll as of that date. That my friend, is what i call a hell of a successful prediction, and when you consider all the uncertainties at the time it was made i'd say it was utterly amazing.

Of course Sweden was right from the beginning. One only has to look at history - the 1968 Hong Kong flu pandemic had an almost identical death rate to the current pandemic. Yet few people were even aware that there was a pandemic. Governments in those days acted responsibly and realised that nothing could be done to stop the spread of the virus. Like Sweden today, they saw their main task was to prevent panic. In this they were successful and there were no economic or social consequences. By contrast in the current pandemic governments decided early to actively promote fear and panic: some for political reasons and some because they were under pressure to "do something". So now we have the situation that much of the world has descended into insanity and utterly irrational decision-making because nobody will admit that they could possibly have been wrong.

What no one has been able to explain to me is why there is a need not even just to approach this particular virus outbreak differently to any other, but to throw all previous pandemic protocols out the window. The main one being - you don't start a mass vaccination program while the pandemic is ongoing. Why? Because it encourages mutations.

This pandemic hit when populist governments hold power and social media proliferates whilst in 1968 things were much more stable regarding government and the media. People devolving power into social media controlling opinion polling make rational governance impossible. Many interests have exploited this opportunity. Also people were far more resilient a mere fifty years ago. Our effete populations and governments have, hand in hand, wreaked havoc.

You omitted a few important points. 1. Sweden has a very high urbanization rate, way higher than Germany for example. By far the most Swedes live in a few packed cities. 2. Sweden has a much larger immigrant population from Africa and Middle East than its neighbours, with immigrants being significantly over-represented among COVID victims. 3. Compared to the years before 2020 Sweden didnt show any significant worsening. Yes, the 2020 spring death spike was large but they had a record low flu season in 2019 which explains some of the 2020 spike ("dry tinder"). The Swedish "control group" alone should deflate the whole lockdown/mask religion in one fell swoop. The fact that nobody talks of Sweden anymore in the media should be telling us enough. Unfortunately this wont have any impact on the policies in the large western nations Germany, France, UK, etc, because - and this is what people always forget - this isnt so much a virus pandemic but a mass psychosis. And there are no effective means against a mass psychosis.

But obviously the debate have taken many crazy turns, and the political opposition are always the first in line to shout for harder restrictions etc. But I also need to tell you that the mass hysteria regarding vaccination is probably as wild here as anywhere else in the western world. I already have anti bodies, yet people around me are shouting at me how stupid I am that I won’t vaccinate myself. I respond “I try to take an adult decision based on science, and I believe that natural anti bodies as well as plenty of daily life precautions is the best way to deal with it”.

I agree. I'm also living/and am from Sweden. So horrible how they're making propaganda so that young adults take the darn vaccine. I wrote to one doctor who said "the only thing now is that the young ones get vaccinated", speaking out to a big newspaper (SVD) and I asked him questions regarding risks etc for our young ones (I have two children, 20 and 22 yrs old, feeling obliged to "stand up" for everyone else). I wrote to him and the reporter, three weeks ago, and still no reply. I have written two reminders asking the doctor/professor to answer my questions. Nothing. Noll svar. If something happens to my daughter (20), who felt obliged to take the shot, event though I tried to tell her to wait (after we have more science behind these shots), I will do more than just write to a doctor and a newspaper. Bra att veta att vi är fler som ifrågasätter vad som sker. Önskar dig allt gott.

Even the data from Norway and Denmark showing lower infection rates can be misleading. Nearly half of Sweden's deaths were from nursing home patients. I am unaware of any evidence at present that Norway and Denmark had similar death rates in their nursing homes. This means that locking down wouldn't have helped Sweden avoid the deaths it suffered. The only policy that would have helped was to isolate nursing home patients, and a lock-down wasn't needed to do that. Also, Sweden has taken in many more migrants on a proportional basis than Denmark and Norway. Migrant communities were harder hit by the pandemic than the non-migrant population.

I live in Sweden with my daughters in London and many friends in South Africa. I can say that living in a smaller university town in Sweden (Umeå - population 150,000), relatively far north, with a large university hospital, that COVID had a relatively minimal footprint. Restaurants & bars stayed open for the most part - with half or less table capacity, buses ran with the drivers cordoned off away from passengers, ppl wore masks but dropped using them when they received both their vaccinations this year. The major impact to Sweden I could visibly see was retail boutiques in shopping centres - mostly clothing, taxi drivers were severely negatively impacted as all the elderly and disabled who usually use them stopped completely. One of the huge helps in minimising COVID infection rates was that, except for nuclear families, most people leave home or live alone in their own apartments and observed contact only with a few close relatives or friends - no more than 1 at a time or maximum 4. There were obviously exceptions, but the way of life here in the north of Sweden is to get out into the countryside, walk, kayak, ski or run daily with friends or alone, so keeping a distance is easy as even in Umeå town there are walkways, cycle paths and ski routes with plenty of forest. This is a Swedish lifestyle which may differ from other larger cities. Smaller towns definitely help - Stockholm and Southern cities fared much worse than those in the north, typically. The biggest plus by far is the social support system for those forced into unemployment and the exemplary healthcare system - I would say significantly better than the NHS in the UK. Anders Tegnell - our contagious disease expert - sagely said from the beginning that you cannot lockdown a population for 18 mnths-2 yrs. Other countries ignored this advice at their peril. They paid severely in terms of far worse economic downturns and mental health, domestic violence & alcohol abuse. Not to mention how many millions streamed frustration into negativity and misinformation on the internet, polarising people and fomenting strange conspiracy theories that inactivity at home allowed all the more. Sweden's population remains largely healthy in body, mind, economically and our children have not suffered social isolation and a complete disruption in learning. Because our healthcare system is 100% digitally and centrally managed, all figures are as close to reality as is possible where in other countries, including the UK, figures are significantly underreported with COVID deaths or issues related to COVID management taking up resources were many times higher. In SA they are experiencing death rates 3x higher than normal, in the many millions of people not factored into reported COVID deaths. This due to poor rural communities who have virtually no means to get reliable access to healthcare - they just die in their huts, no access to clean water and sanitation or huddled into informal settlements in big cities where distancing and washing hands is impossible. Sweden fared well because they structured all facets of life well in advance of COVID hitting. They are a well-educated and disciplined people on the whole. Respectful of others and community centeredness is front and foremost in everything they do. Absolutely holistically geared to all round well-being. THAT was Sweden's saving grace. No external imposed conditions would have improved on that.

@@hanoifilms503 It was not easy for any country to decide for their ppl, but SA was always going to be problematic: 1) exceptionally high unemployment rate 2) exceptionally poor education system leaving millions of unskilled (domestic, etc.) and semi-skilled workers (builders, plumbers, electricians, seasonal farm labourers, etc) without work 3) 48% of the country pre-COVID living below the breadline and frequently going hungry - poor nutrition and weakened health 4) high levels of HIV and other life threatening diseases (TB, HIb, etc) 5) High levels of daily commuters waiting in long queues for transport in taxi's, trains, etc. 6) Severe housing problem with 10s of millions of ppl living in groups in a 1/2-roomed dwelling, 'self-constructed' home without sanitation/clean water. 7) High levels of women and child abuse fuelled by alcohol & drug abuse - so the government banned alcohol for an extended period, crippling an otherwise thriving wine and beer industry, impacting in unemployment and the economy still further. 8) Poor internet infrastructure so that less than half of school going children could continue distance learning through extensive long term lockdowns - many of those poorer children will never be able to pick up their studies again and will feed into the job market as a heightened number of economically doomed under-skilled workers for their lifetimes 9) Add to that justifiable racial tension, politics sprinkled with hate speech and high levels of crime, looting and widespread damage to retail, food and transport infrastructure in the R-Billions It was just a disaster to start with, let alone a pandemic sweeping through there. One of the reasons why sweden had as high numbers as we did was because of the absolutely horrendous way we handle our elder care, many of the elderly who got sick from this were never allowed to go to the hospitals, instead they were not only denied oxygen, they were put on palliative care and given morphine. Also we had had unusually low rates of mortality for many years so you could say we had a bit of a 'backlog' of old and infirm, so yeah, (probably) thanks to covid we had the deadliest year in 8 or so years, but it still in no way was "out there" but very much in line with the numbers we had 10 years ago. Also our seniorhomes are sorta our "dumping ground" for many of our people who are otherwise "unemployable" with low education levels and all too many that can't even speak the language properly, nor were there for the longest time any mandated testing of said personnel, only restrictions for visiting relatives whom in many cases were barred from visiting at all.

If someone get sick you need to call in substitute staff and they could work in another elderly home and that will make the perfect storm for a virus like the Sars cov-19. In the beginning of the pandemic many thougt that alot of young patient would need ICU treatment and maybe thats why swedish hospitals didnt want to fill up their hospitals with many patient who wouldnt be near to survive even with ICU treatment. ICU treatment are just awful for your body. Just give people oxygen wont do much if your are elderly and already in a bad condition. If you are swedish you know that if you live in an elderly home you problably are very sick already.

The psychological and collateral damage aspect of all the covid hassle is pretty much ignored. We will pay a high price for it. Time to return to inner wisdom.

Very happy living in 🇸🇪 with an independent science based government agency being in charge of the strategy and Sweden does a lot of things very well. The media and many scientists are the ones that lost it. Not Sweden. But it’s embarrassing for media and scientists to admit their role. I’m sick of hearing people lecturing me about Sweden when all they’ve done is been to IKEA abroad and read the fear mongering lying media. Sweden followed the existing pandemic plans, respected the constitution and asked the people to comply. And now we’re getting vaccinated. You can not argue against facts.

In the US it was tragically politicized from the beginning. No common sense no common courtesy.

Sweden is a very homogeneous society that obeys the rules. There is no one size that fits all. Their methods would not work for most of the world. Also, their rules were comprehensive for adults and their mortality rate was approximately equal to other advanced countries. The ranking for mortality at present is 21st USA, 40th Sweden, 82nd Canada.

It is now March 6th 2023, and the statistics over deathrates in Europe have been compiled. And it turns out Sweden had the LOWEST deathrate of ALL European countries, including our scandinavian neighbours, during the covid pandemic years of 2020 through 2022. The "extreme" policies applied in Sweden, were simply based on scientific studies of epidemics around the world - before the COVID pandemic! Somehow world media forgot Sweden has had world leading expertise in epidemic research for decades. So much so, that the next door building to the one where the world press interviewed and reported about the Swedish "CDC" authority, lies the European Union "CDC". Swedish policies were based on science, without political meddling based on emotional panic. And of course there never was any cynical "herd immunity" strategy. That was simply a quote taken from a Swedish expert heading to become the pandemic expert for the WHO. He just remarked, that in the end, all epidemics end because of herd immunity. Either naturally aquired, or through vaccination. As a Swede I was very happy that we did not have insanely unscientific measures like restricting people socializing outdoors. Measures like that only caused completely pointless suffering in many countries. Meanwhile, my family had an outdoor birthday party for a relative turning 90. It became a very memorable birthday for him, since it all took place in the winter dark and snow, with barbeque, cake and torches lighting everything. It's not that easy to impress a man who already have had 89 birthday parties! But this one did!😉😃 (I was extra cautious, since I have a bad history of nearly fatal pneumonia episodes. So I avoided crowded shops and elevators. And I only socialized outdoors, but that was it. I'm currently on my 5th COVID vaccine shot.)
