sujani koya In 2006, the ferry ran aground on Gil Island on the north coast of British Columbia, Canada. Ninety-nine passengers were safely evacuated before the ferry sank. The other passengers (two) have never been found and are presumed to have drowned inside the ship.

Is there no warning system in ships if you are close to the land? Like in planes, there is a ground proximity warning system.

Yes, there is. The depiction here is inaccurate, as the crew on the bridge were uncooperative with investigators.

I’ve been by the sunken ships location just off from Gil Island, seen the crosses of the two lost soles on shore many times and everytime it hits the sole very hard. I find it difficult to comprehend such tragedy! The two that lost their lives and are presumed lost at sea as well the vessel, RIP. 😢

They disabled all of the navigation systems, including radar, that would have warned them. Also, the QM dimmed the screens so they were completely black. That means they were not monitoring any instruments. It didn't state in this clip, but the QM and the 4/O were in a relationship together that they recently ended. That's why the QM took a leave of absence 'due to illness'. They were either arguing or making up!

She was at that time the fastest ship in the fleet (not counting the short lived catamarans)she had twin mak 22000 BHP diesels, so stopping quickly would have been an issue

Sergio Alfaro The ferry ran aground in shallow water. An hour later, tidal currents shifted the ferry away from shallow water and into deep water.

It doesn't matter how dark or rainy it was, that's why you have radar. The only flaw is that someone actually has to look at it. It's pretty obvious those two officers were doing something else other than their job. Being as this is B.C. and they're in a union they probably faced no consequences even though two people lost their lives

Why havn´t they dived down to the wreck (after 2007) again? It´s not in the middle of the ocean. It seems to have been human error with the facts at hand.
