Thanks Andy. We definitely will. Someone had used filler on the bow floor an inch thick!! We didn't realise we had a hatch until I ground it back to bare metal. So we will definitely be doing that but not for a while. How was it to do?

Neaha, us guys if we know just one thing it would be never underestimate girl power. You may well be in at the deep end, or think you are, but there is more than enough to be found to show you the way. Books, KZitem, or just asking around. The rust your showing you have to put with what the bottom plate is, some are 10mm, some 12mm and some 15mm to judge where your at. What your showing to you seems a worry but you need a lot more peeling rust before you have a major problem even if your bottom plate is 10mm. Treat it and a few good coats of paint and there will be years and years left in it. Small steps all the time and don't overthink or over worry things. Just notice this is 5 months old so a guess your sorted, but for ballast use high density concrete blocks from a builders yard but lay some 15mm foam pipe lagging or rubber strip each end about 50mm in from each end to keep it off the bottom plate and form an air gape and take up any vibrations. So instead of thinking you can't how good will you feel when you know you can and you did? Any doubts? read to top sentence again.

Somethings you could do is install an inspection hatch and then clean the tank and preserve it using a human friendly paint system. It all depends on if the tank is integral to the hull. There are also filter/ozone light system which will give you drinkable/ shower etc water.

Kinda concerned about the water tank. Safe water is a big factor on a boat. New, clean, safe seems worth doing. You are making everything else right. But……it costs and means removing foredeck it seems. Good luck with your decision. Thinking of you.

We will definitely be sorting out the water tank now we’ve had time to think about it. We found the inspection hatch (it had been fillered over so we couldn’t see it before), so we’ll be able to get in!

I had exactly the same issue with my floor but I had to remove 3 tons of poured concrete as that had been used as ballast and needed to go as my boat had a new base plate and sat too low in the water , I scraped back then rust treated all the whole base inside then red lead then hammerite paint to seal off with respect to the sub floor I used CLS 38 X 64 and treated that with a water repellent ( Wickes black bird out door paint) I laid the joists in both directions for more support these were fixed to the steels with self drilling 50mm screws ( tool station ) for the floor I used hard wood faced 18mm ply ( Wickes ) which was treated again both sides and all the edges I have also fitted aluminium Louvre vents under areas so they can't be seen inorder to ventilate and I can also see the floor base is dry, hope this helps the whole job on a 40 ft boat cost in materials about £1500 and took several weeks Good luck

Wow, thanks for all the info! I always love hearing details of how others have done things as it usually gives us ideas. We've used hard wood 18mm ply from Wickes for the sub floor too! But I wish we had added extra floor joists like you did as ours are a little far apart

Hi just thought I might say that when using bitumen paint if you warm it up it is much easier to use bit late to tell you now but remember for future reference.The water tank they now do two pack epoxy coating (lasts many time longer then biumen)for drinking water tanks no smells or odd tastes like bitumen but a lot more hard work to prep the tank before using it but whatever your choice make sure you buy a potable coating

Really silly question guys, those wooden batons run port to starboard which is great, and youve protected the floor below, but if water gets in, is there room for the water to flow towards the Stern's bilge pump?
@Fulou
2 жыл бұрын
Just to be clear, I'm not criticising I'm just curious how you tackled that issue :)
@DriftwoodFolk

I know don’t worry 😊 I think we have, the bricks have gaps around the outsides and the timber is a couple inches shorter each side. The metal floor joists also have gaps in them to allow water to flow into each section

This might be just me but I cringe every time you say MY boat. Do you not think of it as OUR boat? Seeing you are both working equally hard on it?
@DriftwoodFolk
2 жыл бұрын
I say my and our. I see it as ours because we both work on it together and it’s OUR future home, but I’ll be living on it for probably a year before Mike moves on so it’s going to be MY home too. So I say both mine and ours. Plus I’m really proud to have bought this home as my first home and so excited that it will then be ours and our future dog’s home. I asked Mike if he wanted me to say “we” bought a boat and he said we should say I bought it because it’s the truth and I should be proud. That’s all there is to it X
