Did you know that there's an alternate timeline where Mario was never created?
It came dangerously close to happening in the 1980's when Shigeru Miyamoto wanted to create a game featuring Popeye, who was incredibly popular at the time.
Nintendo was denied a license to use those characters, however, it didn't stop them from moving ahead. They kept the core game play but replaced the characters with original creations of their own.
Bluto became Donkey Kong. Olive Oyl - Popeye's love interest - became Pauline and Popeye himself was replaced by Jumpman. The character we now know as Mario.
It's crazy to think that if Nintendo and Shigeru Miyamoto obtained the license for Popeye's IP then perhaps Mario might never have existed. Not sure I'd like to be in that world, honestly!
