I always thought that interviewing musicians and other artists is kinda pointless. They speak through their art. And art is like a joke, it loses it's point once you have to explain it.

+1 2 I'm an artist and he's completely right. Art does lose it's meaning when you have to explain it. It's meaning is meant to be subjective. The artist has their own personal meaning to it and those who view it have their individual ideas.

+1 2 exactly. you do an interview to promote. if you can't explain your art, then there isn't a conscious thought behind it. art is more akin to science, and a joke is like a magic trick. when you explain the trick, then it loses something because its based on illusion. science and art are not illusion, so explaining them, only highlights it's depth

Alex Wayne Art is subjective, and art isnt subjective. Art is subjective to the creator, and it is subjective to the observer. And the sum of this is objective. "Fucking getting it" means, at least to me, that some people see art for what it is, and others want to seem smarter and therefor make something to be something that it is not. In the case of Die Antwoord interview the intervjuer wanted the band to be some kind of tongue-in-cheek band that only snobs like him got. That people who enjoy Die Antwoord for what they are, instead of what they think they are, miss the point of the band. Of course the band has a lot of humor to them. But people who like Die Antwoord get that. To put it into another example: Camp or "guilty pleasures" (a term I fucking hate) is to enjoy something, not because it is great, but because it has flaws. But a person who "fucking get it" wouldnt call it a "guilty pleasure" cuz they knew why through the flaws it becomes great. They do not need to defend it, or rationalize it or whatever. It is what it is, and you like it. Its difficult to explain this. I tried to, but to "fucking get it" is not on a cerebral level. This is not science or politics. Its art. It goes beyond logic. But I tried.

For those who don't understand Norwegian. The reporters in this video are incredibly patronizing and judging of the group they are interviewing. They say that this is either "incredibly bad music" or just a satirical parody group pushed to the extreme. They describe their music as "so bad it's good" and say the only people that enjoy their music are hipsters that like them ironically. Then they try to frame themselves as pragmatic during the interview but the group clearly saw through their shit. I don't even like Die Antwoord, but for fuck's sake, have some integrity and do your reporting job properly: report, and leave your Jantelov bullshit bias at home.

Thanks. I stumbled upon this group after reading an article about the new movie Suicide Squad...anyway, there apparently is no word in the Norwegian language for White Trash, because I did hear that come out in plain English. When they were on Letterman, the crowd laughed when the song was over, clearly not their intent to be humorous, but maybe I'm wrong.

Man I love how he handles the interviewer with the"conceptual hip hop" queastion. "do consider yourself an intelligent person?" yes "What do you think?" I think the answer is pretty self evident. They used to make conceptual art rap and probably figured they were being elitist or pretentious. Why not just make good music to enjoy it and if some art or some concept gets in it that is just part of who they are. It's the difference between oil painting and drawing comics. A painting will hang in a museum or a rich persons home. A comic may end up in a trash can or kept on a nightstand, but it has broader appeal/accessibility and is no less artful than the oil painting.

There is no music group that 100% represents a country. Countries have thousands upon thousands of diverse qualities that cannot be boiled down and channeled through an album or a video made by a rap crew and their artist friends. What Die Antwoord presents is a smattering of flavors influenced by their experiences and lives in South Africa. They also make many social commentaries about their experiences and lives in South Africa. This is not done to be conceptual art, this is done to be humans making music, which happens to be political, artistic, emotional, jarring, and beautiful when done well. Their style style is expensive to them because they're not cooperating under the American social concept of what is expensive. In America we believe that expensive equates perfect hems and crisp white shirts. Middle class America thinks that American Eagle, Abercrombie, and Hollister are rich kid clothes. Upper classes think that Polo, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, and Tommy Hilfiger are expensive clothes. We think that what Die Antwoord presents is thrift store 80's horror but that's because our perception is skewed by our culture. Amen for people like Die Antwoord who are not going to follow fashion trends built to make consumers shop and rather deliver their own form of expensive. If only Americans could learn from this, maybe kids could love themselves and believe they're expensive through self expression not through carbon copy clothing. Whether you agree with the content of the music or their approach, they are people saying something worthwhile and emoting a beautiful frustration with the world in general. This makes them well worth a glance and for those of us who are inspired by it, an extended introspective listen. This is music. Music is an art form. This is not a category of museum art.

You are quite on the point, sir. I think part of the appeal of Antwoord in particular is that they manage to build such strong characters and staying in character, consistently. That just messes with people's heads. It's hard to know if it's "real" or a performance art. And that shifts peoples perspectives on what's real and what's not. Which is ultimately a healthy thing.

The interview didn't really 'go wrong' they were asked questions that undermined their music so the reactions were understandable that they were not in the best of mood... The stuff that was said in Norwegian went along with that, claiming that people only liked them because they were 'so bad they're good' or because they saw it as a parody on gangsta rap. Which is bullshit because they got a pretty unique sound and that's why people (like I) like them. if you don't respect the people you interview that's obviously gonna affect the outcome of the interview.

One minute it's Boston, the next it's Katie Perry, and then it be might Union Underground, Die Antwoord, Audioslave......you name it. I understand why a load of people would think that they are retarded, hell if you listen to any boertjie talking English, they sound a bit dof. I don't like their music - but I respect the fact that they are taking the piss out of people, and that most people are too daft to understand that THAT IS the point. If you look at most of the lyrics, they are dissing the common white folk (whilst portraying them, apparently blinded by delusions of grandeur.) It is an art - making people mad, making them think. In the interview, Ninja talks about Satanism spawning from Christianity -(which is a bit more of a complex subject, thus sort of proving that he's not as retarded as he's letting on.) technically this isn't wrong. Lucifer was a fallen angel - and without that - we wouldn't have had evil. Also - "No one refers to themselves as trashy." Very true - every person believes they are stylish, every person believes they are classy - we all get it very wrong most of the time - we just don't get scrutinized under the spotlight as much as these guys. In Afrikaans we have a saying: "Die hoogste bome vang die meeste wind." (The highest trees gets the most wind.) Meaning the higher up you are (or more in the public eye you are) the more trouble you will get. Granted, they are looking for it, but still. I think they succeeded at one thing though - making the wheels turn - you know more of what you like, more of what you don't like, more of what you don't want to be (or what you aspire to, your choice) after watching the videos. MPO is that they just want you to think outside the box, and NOT be like everyone else - just be happy as you are. "Fuck that poes in the skinny jean - fok maar jy's trendy." (You in the skinny jeans, dayum you're trendy.) Meaning, that they'd rather wear zef cropped tops than be slaves to fashion... To close off "Do you consider yourself to be an intelligent person? Not a trick question - just yes or no. "Yes." So what do you think?" That's exactly it - it's a matter of opinion - and if they had to concern themselves with all the naysayers - they wouldn't be where they are. Not everyone likes Katy Perry, Eminem, Marilyn Manson or Die Antwoord - it's still your decision - but you can always turn the dial off, or watch a puppy video. They are pushing boundaries just because they can.

You miss, are a hipster. I honestly don't think that you understood the analogy to Satanism that he made cause the point of Satanism was NOT to pull off that retarded good-evil dualism of Christianity but to totally trash it in the first place because Christianity is just some retarded nonsensical shit. If you couldn't even understand that, then it's unlikely you understood anything else he said. They are high level trolls and trolls never push boundaries, they just troll for the sake of it to generate butthurt. They are good for putting the finger into something, but they NEVER ever have changed a fucking thing in the world because deep inside they don't want things to change, they are perfectly fine with their roles as trolls. Killing their own supply would negate their own purpose of existence. That's the difference to real progressive people who DO change the world, who DO push boundaries. To be a progressive person you first need to know in which direction you want change to happen. That's something "Die Antwoord" has, ironically, no answer for, which is also perfectly in tune with postmodern ironical hipsterism and that's also the reason they are even that famous in the first place because they are not opposing anything, they fall in the line and function as a valve (letting off steam to prevent everything to blow up, you know) because they are just, you guessed it, trolls who cash in money with their trolling.

ahiddenoddity It always amazes me when people who are passionate enough about something to argue on the internet don't first do a quick search to check whether or not they're right. They have indicated in several interviews that their getup is a persistent performance; people like to quote the interview in which Ninja equates himself to a Clark Kent who doesn't take off his Superman costume. Both Yolandi and Ninja went to art school and have had several other satirical music projects-- most notably Max Normal, a corporate hip hop group which features them rapping in suits and ties. Die Antwoord was just the project that stuck. Again, not sure why you're so intent on speaking out against them, but do yourself a favour and try to fully understand the things you hate before publicly denouncing them. I'll leave you with this thought: why would a musical savant such as Aphex Twin suppourt, perform with, and give distribution rites to a band that clearly does not display substantial musical talent?
@Klikkitse

Luka Dragutinovic I think one other thing that people don't get is that they are South African. That's their culture, their thing. You can't use stereotypical American/Western values to judge what they are because that's like trying to determine if an apple ticks all the coconut criteria. Partially I guess it's because trash in some places does have a style that is visually similar to theirs. For them - in my limited Western understanding - their style is Zef and it's respectable. I don't know much about Yolandi, but I've seen quite a few interviews with Ninja. He likes random things, he appreciates random and original as a form of art, entertainment, something that pokes at people's minds. He is very good at that, too. In fact I think he is pretty much all the time a little bit in his own world doing his creations, which would by supported by the recurring difficulties actually formulating a crystallised summary of his thoughts. Everything's kind of work in progress in his head.

Well this is all not quite what the discussion is or was about. The question wether or not they are making conceptual art basically means that people think that these guys are acting out a persona. That the way are acting are just characters they designed and they're not actually at all like that. That their appearance, behaviour and with that their band and music is all just a big act, which would make all of it a conceptual art piece. Andy Kaufman has done some very similar stuff. He had made videos insulting women in general and daring any of them to wrestle him. Some did and he beat all of them since he only wrestled women he could easily overpower. Then a professional wrestler challenged him, he took on the fight and got his neck seriously hurt, in the end they were on a talk show together where Andy acted completely innocent and totally pressed the wrestlers buttons which almost amounted to a fight in the studio. But everything, the whole thing, turned out to be a giant act. A big performance piece which every one had been in on and which they tried to make seem as credible as possible. Some people think die antwoord is a similar thing, just a big performance piece.
@God001111

Willem Maas die antwoord definitely is that, given ninja's prior works, but you don't just go up to the performer while they're in character and ask them about it. besides, the way he asks him "what do you think" means it should be obvious and not need to be stated,

Yeah, I think Die Antwoord were just being worked up over nothing. I did not see anything wrong in the questions. The interviewer just wanted to get their perspectives. You cannot be an act like Die Antwoord and expect everyone to 'get' your perspective on on your own niche. This is why interviews exist, asking the artist on various topic concerning them. If they did not want to be asked such questions, they could have said that they do not wish to talk about it which is well within their right. I am sorry but I will hold my view on this being poorly conducted on Die Antwoord's part.

+Cassius Allen from a video editing standpoint, it's possible that the interviewer was harsh and projected ignorance on their part. we don't know this because it was cut from the video. without that part, it just makes Die Antwoord look pissed without rhyme or reason.

+Cassius Allen I get the feeling that they felt offended for being compared to a specific style of art. I said this on another thread, but I deal with this problem. And yes, it frustrates me just as much as it frustrated him. People look at my work and say "This looks like (insert name)'s style!" or "You draw anime!" No, it's my style. It's not an anime style or someone else's. It's ZhengjiuYishu's style. Mine. Most artists don't like being put in boxes with titles such as conceptual art. Also, someone above you answered this perfectly. Art loses it's meaning once you have to explain it. :/ Art is meant to be viewed in different ways. If artists constantly stated what they saw in their mind and how they felt, then it'd be difficult for other people to look at it differently. Because there's already a set meaning. Ya know? But I completely agree that instead of getting upset, he could've just said "Leave it up to the viewers" and move on. Then again, there's some cutting going on so there could've been some pushiness or other frustrating questions leading up to this one~ Ahh sorry for the long comment! : D

letthemusicrock805. It is all an act, when you meet them in person they are fantastic people. This is just the style they do their music in and even their Interviews. as Keron Kolbe said, "their characters are parodies and they never break character!! its not a reflection of "us South Africans"" People that dislike them is being narrow minded most of the time and do not understand what they are actually doing. If you don't like them because of the way they act and they do their music then so be it. However, don't dislike them before you understand them.

Die Antwoord is pure brilliance. They refused to conform... but not like the Hipsters who are conforming to non-conformists... they do their own thing and "Fok Julle Naaiers" if you don't like what they are. Die Antwoord does what they want to do (and make mad bank from it) without bowing or changing who they are to fit in. If you don't like them, you don't understand them. It's that simple. To understand Die Antwoord is deeper than just understanding their lyrics and beats. If you don't "get" Die Antwoord, you aren't thinking at all.

asking a musician/rapper, wich is a a form of artist, if their videos are conceptual art is to me a pretty forward question that can be simply answered with a yes or no, no need to get all pissy about it, its a legitimate question and i find it very disturbing that people of that age in this age dont even understand the question. Its actually an honor to have your work percieved as art, and conceptual art is hard to pull off, before this interview i actually believed some of their videos were like that, glad they showed me they can't even grasp the concept

Often times the people who are 'wacky' or 'weird' are branded as stupid or dumb or non-intelligent. And then you find that these amazing groups like Die Antwoord are some of the most intelligent people around. It's not just to do with not being mainstream, it's also to do with have insight into art and expression. Another example; Marilyn Manson. One of the cleverest guys I've seen interviewed but he, too, is branded as a 'weird' guy.

Judging from the comments on this video, it seems that a lot of people don't realize that Die Antwoord started as a parody, and that "Ninja" and "Yolandi" are actually art-school educated hipster-types. They were entertainers of a completely different stripe before Die Antwoord. Look up "Max Normal" on youtube. Enjoy!

man im an artist my self. this is the most dumbest yet most outstandingly brilliant form I have yet to understand right now just heard you guys not even 10 minutes ago. my first was I fink you freeky...... that shit was ..... I seriously have no words right now but im trying to explain how it made me feel bare with me. I don't think the songs would make nearly any sense without the music videos. both the audio and the video breaks down and shatter every bit of conventional ways of music that anyone has grown up with. The chaotic waves you guys put out is soothed by some miraculous symmetry , the visions it brings forth in ones mind with the videos is quite disturbing and im sorry I don't know the girls name yet but she and I do mean this with the best compliments she freaks me out I adore creepy scary things but her voice and the way she does her character I would never and I mean never come up with in my most craziest nightmares. im sorry if that offended but it truly is a compliment you are out of this world scary with your costumes it is just literally breath taking. Marilyn manson has nothing on you girl. so I guess what im saying is the world is just not ready yet for this groups brilliance. btw the last bit of the comment the guy said about the art " what do you think" was a paradox people expect answers for their questions when they are not ready for what you bring in other words people are scared of what they do not know or understand. keep at it you just got another fan. sorry for the long comment
@GloryLizard

I'm reading these comments and I hope everyone does keep in mind that they are entirely satirical. That's why they -acted- offended at that exact question. Because it absolutely is conceptual art. If they were to say "yeah totally!" that'd completely defeat it. Pretty ironic, isn't it?

Brakathor but they've been fighting for their music and fame and money since they were called Max Normal. I saw 'ninja' do a rap show at a little concert in Durban in 2001, he was pretty normal and very talented, extremely talented. Don't you and everyone else realise it's a big act even in interviews? They've shed some light on a country that the rest of the World opinionated on since apartheid and a very amazing part of the world that no-one seems to care about when they should, so through their ways they're one of the biggest positive things in history of South Africa. How would you respond to being asked if you are a piece of conceptual art when you are a musician? The World doesn't know how to deal with abnormality, you've got to admit, this Die Antwoord stuff is pretty hardcore in a music scene of acting and money.
@Brakathor
10 жыл бұрын
The fact is, if an artist doesn't self identify as a conceptual artist or a Dadaist, then they're very apt to be offended at the insinuation. That doesn't mean it's not a fair question though, and there are many more intelligent ways to deal with it than to say "think what you want," and then walk out of the interview.
@michaelmuldoonmikesm08

michael muldoon Well let me say this: by dealing with the situation the way they did, all they're doing is conforming to a long string of arrogant insecure new money twats who managed to be placed up on a pedestal from their slum neighbourhoods through their music. That's hardly an astounding breakthrough in human consciousness...

Brakathor Dude, This is all an act. They are creating situations like this on purpose. They are just a parody of certain South African people and it is all an extremely elaborate act. The guy playing as ninja was brought up as an English South African and everything about him is an act. His accent is grossly exaggerated into some dreadful Afrikaans accent when he himself is not even Afrikaans.

To me it just seems like you're a really weird "philosophical" guy that, in reality, just sits in his room all day thinking about shit that doesn't even concern him because you're so bored and having nothing better to do.
