As we all know that following a proper diet is very important for dialysis or Chronic disease patients. So, Dr. Puru Dhawan gives a complete diet plan for people on dialysis. Dialysis patients are different from other patients with kidney disease, dialysis helps to remove proteins and other essential vitamins from the body which kidney stops to do.
It becomes very important for a kidney patient to take care of the diet as diet helps the kidney to function properly and following a dialysis diet can reduce the kidney progression and improves the kidney functioning.
50% oft he kidney progression is through diet and dialysis removes fluids and liquids from the body while removing proteins and electrolytes (sodium and potassium). So, it becomes very essential for kidney patient to follow a proper diet.
What protein do to a dialysis patient :
Patients in dialysis suffer from anemia due to insufficient intake of protein. Protein helps body. In kidney failure the kidney do not make enough erythropoietin to form red blood cells and irregular and roper diet leads dialysis. Diabetes patients are advised to have high quality protein intake which includes meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. But we recommend 2 egg white a day.
Fluid intake :
At Sai Sanjivani we advise our patients to increase the fluid intake for urine production. As less fluid intake will result in dehydration and high creatinine levels. Drinking water is recommended when your lips and tongue are dry.
Potassium levels:
A dialysis patient needs to control high potassium levels in the blood. A patient can prevent further damage by taking low potassium vegetables and avoid high Potassium Vegetables like:
potato
sugar beets
ARBI
Turnips
Sweet potato
cauliflower
Spinach
cauliflower
Fenugreek
coriander
patient can eat onions, radish and carrots
Vegetable suitable in dialysis are:
tomatoes
bitter gourd
eggplant
OKHRA
Gourd
Round gord
pumpkin
Parwal
A patient should monitor body weight, blood pressure and sugar levels daily.
High potassium diet in dialysis patients can result into swelling in the feet and face. Eating more quantity of salt can increase the blood pressure of the patient and in kidney patients blood pressure is usually high. So, it is recommended to avoid salt intake. Patients at Sai Sanjivani are advised to take salt free diet.
