@DoubleDogDare54

A hinny resembles a horse more than mules do. They lack the long ears of a mule and are more "horse" in the head and overall appearance - but there is enough donkey in them you just know they aren't a horse in their body shape and general balance. Difficult to put down in words, but if you see them you can see it immediately.

Is a hinny sterile?
@andrewkingjr.6356
Ай бұрын
@@lucyfoster8624 yes Hinnies and Mules are sterile with the exception of a few rare cases. It’s my limited understanding that it’s due to the chromosomes of the horse and donkey not being equal. When a viable offspring is born the product is either a horse or a donkey. Also, I think this has only been confirmed with females reproduction. Male mules and hinnies are rarely if ever left intact (un-gelded) due to the assumption that they are infertile, and the danger of keeping an intact male equine.

For anyone wondering they’re sterile because of recombination during meiosis, the process that makes eggs and sperm. Half an animal’s chromosomes come from the father and the other half from the mother. When an animal makes its own eggs/sperm it recombines (mixes up) the homologous chromosomes, which have genes for the same stuff, but maybe different versions of those genes. Because half the chromosomes are from a horse and half are from a donkey, this mixing doesn’t work because the chromosomes aren’t actually homologous.
