actually violin strings are only some steel, and fiddle's are all steel. They are also usually 2 / 4 and 1 / 4 violins, while violins are 3 / 4 and 4 / 4.

@@EggsAreYum. That's just not true. The only difference between a violin and fiddle is the name. All fiddles are violins and all violins are fiddles. The size of your violin and the type of strings used are up to the player, and are typically chosen for either player comfort or tone. A country violinist may prefer steel strings because they have a brighter tone, but a classical violinist can still use steel strings if that's the sound they're going for. A country violinist may also use gut strings if they want a warmer and more mellow sound.

I flinched a bit at the beer spilling but judging how that violin looks, it’s either really cheep or a stunt violin so it’s fine. Still made me jump

Great illustration!!! Players can mod the bridge or even string spacing...if they choose, but yes, the same instrument, with different playing styles.

There IS no difference in the physical instrument, “fiddle” just refers to the style/genre of music. If one is a “fiddle player”, it usually refers to the fact that one plays “fiddle music”. While if one is a “violinist”, it refers to one playing almost exclusively classical music. A person can be both a fiddle player and a violinist as well, it’s just a matter of what they’re playing.

It's all a play style difference. Irish fiddle playing and classical violin couldn't be more different. Heard a classical violinist playing an Irish tune with lots of vibrato and while they were obviously quite skilled, they butchered the tune

The difference is in how the bridge is cut. For fiddles, the bridge is slightly flatter, bringing the fingers closer to the finger board.

A violin can also have a flatter bridge, and a fiddle can have a rounder bridge. The two words are synonyms, with the only difference being the style they imply

@@stephanieaubin yes. I mainly play bass, keyboard, and guitar but I also have experience with almost every commonly used western orchestra/band instrument. I teach music at an elementary school, and I help run our school band. The bridge of any instrument is subject to the player's preference. A low action guitar is still a guitar, and a low action violin is still a violin

Ah some violin becomes a fiddle because of its bridge hight and the violin itself in 3 ways... 1. Fiddle violins are more dirty and nasty than regular violins hahahaha 2. Some fiddle have shorter and slightly flat bridge in order to play a chords easily. 3. The sound can either be similar to regular violins however most fiddle violins use a cheap steel core strings making it sound tinny and quite brighter, so generally the fiddle sounds actually bright in approach. But there are some fiddle players who also using synthetic core strings, some of them i heard using dominant set, or tonica.

Violins and fiddles can be the same thing. Somehow what's beginning to boggle my mind that medieval fiddles can be called a violin, too, or sometimes vielle ^^;. It's interesting that the violins can be called a fiddle when they are the same thing ^^

Love the joke, but I always was told that the "technical" difference was that a fiddle has a flatter bridge to make playing chords easier, though you can play a violin bridge like a fiddle bridge and vice versa. Is there any truth in this?
