Very helpful explanation of how to use the Pentatonic scale(s.) It's also nice how you blend theory with practical playing. Not all teachers do that but it's very helpful. That concept of the major and minor pentatonic scale(S) can be a little tricky at first. One way I remember it is if I start on a major chord e.g., A major, to get into the pentatonic shape, I just move down the fret board so that my pinky is now on the root note (A.) As I have gotten more comfortable with the shapes and patterns I can now improvise and play both parts jumping between rhythm and lead- when I can pull it off. It's usually on pieces that have simple, predictable rhythm section like many Blues tunes as well as Nutshell by Alice In Chains.

Awesome video as always. I think a video demonstrating how the pentatonic scale in the same position can either be heard as major or minor would be a great one to do. Maybe play over a backing track that’s in A minor and then one in C major to show how despite playing the same notes that they can sound totally different in context. Understanding this really helped me a lot.

Great video Desi. So you could say the major pentatonic is the second mode of the minor pentatonic..
@desisernaguitar
3 жыл бұрын
Sure, but I think of them more in relation to their full major and minor scales. A minor is the relative minor to C major and vice versa. A minor is the 6th mode of C major. Overall, that makes more sense to me.

V good. I have a question! I'm memorising and playing the forms. I recently, realised, The minor penatonic form 1 is the same as the major penatonic form 6. The minor penatonic form 2, is the same as the major pentatonic form 1. My question from here applying this approach to your video: If I play A minor penatonic form 1, which you play in the video. And then play C Major penatonic off the C using the same shape - do I throw out the visualisation of the the major forms? --- because playing from here is going to play the scale across 2 of the forms?
@desisernaguitar
2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I understand your question or that it matters. The patterns are ultimately irrelevant. The pentatonic scale notes are located all over the fretboard. Use them in any position or pattern you like. They're the same notes whatever you do.
@simco7473

@@desisernaguitar Thanks for your reply. All good I figured out my train of thought in learning this. I was essentially integrating my understanding of the minor penatonic v major. Yes totally agree with ya. Yes that's right. The shapes are basically a scaffold that you can kick away once comfortable.

Question. Does this apply to the other 4 pentatonic scales?
@desisernaguitar

Yes. Once you determine the proper pattern one, you can stay in the same pentatonic key by moving to any of the other patterns.

What messes with my head is that A min pentatonic and C major pentatonic are the exact same 5 notes. They all use the same five patterns as well. 🤷♂️I don’t understand that part, how can that be?
@desisernaguitar
2 жыл бұрын
There's a relationship there. There's a relationship between the chords as well. The A minor and C major chords share the notes C and E. An A minor seven chord, ACEG, actually has a full C major triad in it, CEG. This is how music works! Learn more here: www.GuitarMusicTheory.com

Thanks - guess I’m getting hung up trying differentiate the min v maj scale/patterns. how can they be the same if they are each made up of different intervals? will it make more sense when you get into chord theory or relative minor? right now, I feel like I’m supposed to know what that means. Thx

Learn lots of pentatonic scale song parts. Each riff and solo you learn will demonstrate how the scale is used and how it creates two different tonalities. See the song parts I reference in Fretboard Theory Chapter 2.

The root is different but how to really create the difference from those relative key?

@@desisernaguitar yeah but when I really play the scale how to make the lick that sound like maj or minor that what I ask. Thank you for your comment
@desisernaguitar
3 жыл бұрын
@@timesbiology7192 I think I fully explained and demonstrated this in the video. Resolve your licks to the relative major chord tones to produce a major sound (as demonstrated in my Let It Be example), and resolve your licks to the relative minor chord tones to produce a minor sound (as demonstrated in my Break Down example). It helps to play over major and minor music as opposed to playing without accompaniment.

I have watched 15 different videos on this concept. Same scale DIFFERENT STARTING AND ENDING NOTES. Thats it. So simple but noone made it easy WTF they are all selling shit and not teaching the bottom line
@desisernaguitar
2 жыл бұрын
I would add that the starting and ending notes don't really matter either. Rather, it's what you play over and which note in the scale your ear hears as the tonal center. In other words, when you play the C major pentatonic scale over a piece of music in the key of C, you can start and end on any note in the scale. The scale will always sound like C major regardless of where you start or end because you're using it over music in the key of C. Likewise in the key of A minor. I hope this adds more clarity.

Yes but not really you're talking about relatives not the differences between major and minor ; starting point, finish point is again relative since they use the same notes. But if you're going to talk about differences between major and minor then In this case A minor uses the following notes A C D E G but A major uses A B C# E F#.
@taxationistheft2.0

The differences are they're not difference. They just the same notes
@desisernaguitar

They are the same notes, but the structure and sound of the scale completely changes when you change which note you use as the tonic pitch.
