@@ClaireCarmichael Hello Claire. Sorry to butt in but, a very serious question has arisen in my own family, a situation that I, myself, had to face over a number of decades as someone with Asperger's Syndrome, and that is suddenly having to be a sole carer for a parent. A cousin of mine, similarly with Asperger's, is now facing the same difficulty in that he has to look after his mother who has cancer. He's only 23 and has already had problems with addiction and in the process of weaning himself off. He's exhausted already and my great concern is that, with no help, he is going to go rapidly downhill. Whatever advice you can give would be extremely appreciated. Thank you. I'd hate to see history repeating itself upon him, especially when he's going through enough stress already.

@@josefschiltz2192 I'm so sorry they are going through this! Please get them to contact their local support teams, GP, council, social services which can help get support them with funding and carers etc. Also the GP can refer to a 'social prescriber' who will be really good to talk to about this issue and can advise and direct them in the right direction.

@@ClaireCarmichael I suspect some of the difficulty, the invisibility of the situation lies in that people on the spectrum are profiled as being within the care of another and not 'meant' to be the other way round. I've scoured the net, trying different combinations of search words, and it all seems to come around to the same thing. Adults who care for autists. I'm sure, as in my case of over thirty years, there have been - and are - people on the spectrum who are carers, but it's just not expected. I've found some contact details and sent them. Myself, in the midst of 'recovering' from chronic exhaustion and C-PTSD, and being right across the country, can only send details, talk over the phone and try my best to advise. It's frustrating seeing this, as an almost action replay, and annoyingly stuck within my own recovery program and little else - I feel - I can do about it. They being in Shropshire, myself in Suffolk.

@@josefschiltz2192 I know of people who have autism and are carers / nurses / doctors. Autism is varied between each person, and each person is unique and individual and had different support needs (if any at all). But I’m not a specialised in this area, and not sure what the answer is to your problems sadly. But please seek more support from the teams I suggested :) they will be a great help I think. I’m sorry I can’t be any more help than that x

Im not your stereo typical person you think of as a carer, but am interested in making this career choice. My question is, being male and 50 with a mixed work history and no paid carer experience, could I be realistically employed? For 10 yrs ive cared for my autistic son, and increasingly dissabled wife. The aspect that scares me the most, re carer, is the toileting and showering side of things. But it seems an industry thats in plentiful demand and pays ok. Applying for my enhanced DBS check Tomorrow.
