How did you forget Master Quest from the Ocarina of Time re-releases? It's the standard double damaging enemies, PLUS remixed dungeon puzzles in which many of the new puzzle designs are real head-scratchers.

I don't think Master Quest is a fair contender. Some of the design is just bullshit. Even without talking about crystal switches hidden in walls with just the tip poking out to show there's something there, there's a lot of bad game design in Master Quest. It's way too easy to lose your shield in the Deku Tree, there's a surprise Like-Like from the ceiling in Jabu-Jabu, the way to get the first key in the Fire Temple is completely ridiculous, Stalfos are overused, you have to either know the layout of a room in the Bottom of the Well that's optional in the original version, or blindly navigate said room to get the Lens of Truth, and there's even more I could talk about.

This is an interesting topic for the Zelda series, and Hero Mode has been a staple of the series that is supposed to address the easy difficulty but most are not that in-depth. BotW’s master mode is the best version because at least it changed a lot of enemy placement and heightened awareness along with regenerative health. Good video

I completely disagree with what you said about Zelda II. It's not even that hard comparing that game's difficulty to the like of Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, Japanese Mario 2, or even the likes of some Mega Man games. All of those games are great(except for arguably Japanese Mario 2 aka Lost Levels), and fair, and Zelda II falls into the camp of tough but fair too, probably more so than all those other games I just mentioned because you can level up in that game and unlock shortcuts on the overworld map. Heck even bottomless pits aren't a death sentence once you get the fairy spell.

im doing echoes of wisdom on 'hard' mode (i play zelda games all the time and they've never been difficult to me) and oh my gosh echoes of wisdom on hero mode is actually tough. I just realized that RPGs should have a high-score with the lowest level at clearing. "You think you're hard? I beat Grafnakas at level 9" "Some of us have children, Greg." Edit: Zelda 1 hard to navigate? Motherfucker, are you high?! Figuring out WHERE TO GO is the game. That's the point of Zelda games!

The puzzle I stumped on for years was The bottle grotto dungeon in links awakening. I had no idea how to get the nightmare key. This was before I had internet. The game was also kinda old at the time, so I couldn’t ask any of my friends. Now obviously there’s a hint from the owl statue that tells you how to get the key, but I didn’t really understand it. I didn’t know what a pols voice, stalfo, and Keese was. I didn’t even know if it was a hint at the time. Eventually by lucky I just defeated the enemies in a random order that was correct and progressed. Never in my life have I been stuck on a Zelda puzzle for so long

re: Zelda 1's obtuseness - this was the first game and they were still experimenting with designs. And also, guides were a means of profit padding back then (in a way that's of course impossible with the internet), so game designers were incentivized to make things obtuse.

I don't remember Wind Waker being that easy hahaha! One thing we needed help with from the web was how to get the Song of Soaring though. I will play Master Quest (OOT) at some point. If you ask me, MM has issues, but it was a good idea to make an OOT-like game (and an OOT sequel) harder and weirder. Gives you a reason to play it. It's kind of a pimped version of OOT. You could say Fallout New Vegas is kind of like that when comparing it to Fallout 3.

Honestly, I still want a Zelda 2 remake. I see a genuinely great action RPG adventure there, but the "Nintendo Hard"-nondesign that plagued way too many NES games keeps it from sticking its head out and I am among the players who could never beat it, even with a guide. Edit: Zelda 2 has a second quest??? xD I genuinely didn't know.

The big reason why MM was hard is because of the time limit. Once the third day ends, it's game over, and you'll have to restart the temple from step 1. I'm probably the minority, but I didn't think Stone Tower was that bad. There was really only one part that was BS, and that was you have to exit the temple to find the switch to turn everything upside down. I don't know how the hell anyone was supposed to know that without a guide.

It's interesting to see so many people who think Master Mode was well designed when I personally hated it. One of my favorite things to do in BotW was to raid enemy camps, but because enemy HP stats were so beefed up on top of all the healing, I'd end up breaking all my weapons and the rewards were never good enough to make up for it. And all the good new treasures were guarded by octo rocks which were really easy to take out. And tbh I didn't find it all that more difficult compared to a first playthrough. I'd already gotten all the attack patterns down and could defeat silver enemies handily, and gold enemies just felt like more tedious versions of that with their beefed up HP. On that note I probably wouldn't enjoyed that mode in TotK way more, since fusion and horn drops would have solved pretty much my entire problem with that mode.

Master Mode is NOT the best difficulty increase, the health regeneration and hit sponginess of the enemies SUCKS. It does have a bunch of upsides, but just those two things is enough to ruin it for me. Also, he did an entire difficulty video without mentioning the hardest game since ALTTP, TFH. Even in multiplayer, the game is brutal on the challenges, and even just the later areas with no challenge added are still hard.

As overused as the term is, that is a skill issue. Some people are so bad that they would fail if they have to do any combat at all and there has to be a limit to how low a game has to put the requirement for the credits to roll.
@marenwithanm7091

@@lpfan4491sure, skill issue it may be, but this skill issue is probably a more accurate assessment of the skill level present in the general population playing the Zelda games in the first place. People on KZitem who get to make gaming (playing or talking about) their career aren't really a very accurate representation of the average joe buying these games. Your hardcore gamer isn't either. Especially with how many people gained an interest in the series after botw. I'm not saying alttp is a bad game, I have a lot of fun with it, but I can definitely find myself frustrated at times as it is a more difficult game as older games tend to be. It's no Zelda 2 though. That game... That game was hard. I don't think much of anyone would argue struggling with that game to be a skill issue 🤣
