In this video created for the special exhibition Get Stoked! Fueling Furnaces from Wood to Sun, watch the Museum’s Hot Glass Team build and fire an ancient-style wood-fired furnace.
The process begins by mixing straw and refired ceramic to create daub, a type of ancient building material. The furnace is built by hand and dried for several weeks. Crucibles filled with glass are placed inside. The wood fuel is lit, and the furnace slowly comes up to temperatures exceeding 2000°F. It is now ready to blow glass.
