I can see them updating this to have proper slicing, when they are ready to discontinue the octatrack (or upgrade/replace it). The processor of the octa is close to 15 years old, so it’s probably going to be out of production soon. After just how much was added to the original digitakt over the past 7 years, I highly doubt they won’t add true slicing in a future update, along with tons of other features we haven’t even thought of yet.

if it did have proper slicing, how would you feel about digitakt II vs octatrack? like someone said below i imagine that they’ll introduce it via firmware update once they either retire octatrack or else release octatrack III. i agree with you that it’s not a good decision for them to withold this crucial feature because it’s so frustrating and so clearly something the machine is capable of, but therefore it must have been done on purpose, and the only reason i can imagine is to keep the octatrack valid for longer.
@SONWU

With proper slicing it would certainly be a closer contest between the two. Things being a bit quicker on the Digitakt is a big pro, as well as having Overbridge for implementing it into a DAW workflow, also having 16 MIDI CCs per track that can be renamed is huge. The Octatrack of course has Scenes, which is a super fun feature, also interesting MIDI facilities (although some with frustrating implementation) Also 16 stereo tracks DT vs. 8 stereo tracks OT MIDI mutes vs. Audio mutes Overall, IF the DT gets slicing…I'd go with the DT (even though you'd still be missing things) One thing that someone wrote on Elektronauts gives me hope though. The "slice" machine was renamed to "grid" machine…which makes me think there may be a proper slice mode in the works.

It's also worth asking if E have ever admitted that this is the reason for not adding it. Because there are a ton of people who accept this as fact. For me it was simple. The addition of the chorus effect alone made this unit worth it. I still have the Rytm MKII, A4 MKII and the Octa MKII but by putting the chorus in digitakt they effectively created their most self-contained instrument yet. It can take any role. Drums, beats, synth & sound design tool, scratchpad for ideas or create complete tracks. (yes the octa can too but sounds dated) The speed and logic of the sequencer on top of that for both internal and midi mayhem truly makes this a desert island machine. Only had mine for a few days now but it's a solid piece of kit. I for one don't miss the slicing since I'm perfectly fine with, and actually like, the grid machine. Had the octa for years and never ever bothered to manually slice things. Ever. But we all have different workflows. I'd rather have small incremental updates rather than a massive load of new stuff on a new release. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. They kept the digitakt true to its DNA and that's a good thing.

The FX improvements are somewhat underwhelming to me- 1) effects are still not insert aka per track, the delay, reverb, and chorus are all sends (same as on Analog 4 and Digitone, 2) all the other effects are not new, they’re just classified as effects and presented on a single screen, instead of being scattered around the various sample pages. I suppose you could say some of the new filter models like comb are sort of effects. I’m also still a bit baffled by the lack of slicing, but here’s my tin foil theory for why it will definitely be included: Elektron changed the machine name from “slice” to “grid”, presumably because there will be a new slice machine in the future. I am thinking there will be a reasonable workaround, however: you can now add multiple different “presets” to a single track. You could easily make multiple preset copies of the same sample, and the adjust the start and end points of each version. Still not as elegant as Push/MPC sampling, when the end point of one slice automatically becomes the start of the next. I did pre-order one, not because I’m banking on any particular firmware update, but because I already adore the Digitakt for what it is, and I want to support the future of the product. Time stretching, stereo sampling, better midi features, kits, chorus all in the same form factor make me pretty happy.

Coming from Akai MPC the list of features that I'm missing is so long that I don't even bother. I love the minimalistic approach of the Digitakt hardware, I'd give that a 10/10, the workflow is an acquired taste but I think it also deserves a 9/10, connectivity 8/10, but feature wise they astonish me every new product release with how little progress was made. If I may take a wild guess it's a byproduct of their support old gear with updates strategy. Which is probably eating up money, resources and staff that cuts away from the new features that can be implemented in the new product releases. I'm not saying that isn't a great strategy, it has worked wonders for their image. Where it is failing currently is on the innovative side of their product. I genuinely want to buy the Digitakt 2 but it doesn't outperform any of my other samplers. Not even my original MPC Live which is 7 years old now. It can do everything the Digitakt 2 does and far more plus it has a build in battery, more connectivity and if you ask around for a store that still has one, it would cost you 1/3 of the price of the Digitakt 2. People who swear by the Elektron workflow are obviously not gonna care. But to others like me it's so odd to see everyone so excited for a product that looks and works great, yet offers so little beside that to justify the purchase. Elektron has this clever way of showing stylish video's, where they show what can be done with their products and they'll add demo projects that will blow your socks off. That's how they get you, and that's probably how they'll get me one day. But for now the Digitakt 2 no matter how much I want to love it is a pass. I shall not be GAS-lighted (yet).

@@SONWU It does sort on name, I think? So when saving as new preset for each adjustment we can just add an index. Manual slicing like this would do it for me. But the lack of zooming makes it "impossible" on long samples. A request so many users have wanted since day 1. Look forward to all the upcoming user videos to see how people are using these new features.

Hello buddy, I like the Elektron devices and the Digitakt. But I'm still waiting and really considering. We brides still have the Octatrack. and then we both end up in a quandary when Opz Field comes. Ultimately, everyone should be aware that it's not about the amount of equipment you own, but you can make really good music even with one small gear. I'm excited about the hype, but you can't make better music if you have the newest latest device. I'll do it like you and wait 👋😉👍

Hey! Oh yeah, too much gear can be very distracting… True, gotta save money for the OP-Z as well. So many decisions, so many unknowns :D Somehow I still want the DT2, or D2 but we shall see. One thing that someone wrote on Elektronauts gives me hope though. The "slice" machine was renamed to "grid" machine…which makes me think there may be a proper slice mode in the works.

Not pulling the trigger until they fix the slicing. Not to mention as the way it stands right now, you can’t slice and time stretch, it’s one or the other which is also super annoying. The other thing that would be highly desirable for me is at least 2 note polyphony per track so samples with reverb tails don’t get choked when the loop restarts. I just can’t imagine why this wouldn’t be possible. I’m not a programmer by any means but come on, there is polyphony on many samplers… cheaper ones at that. If they are holding back on proper slicing to protect the sales of a 15 year old legacy box (that they refuse to update, so that’s on them) has it, I’ll never buy another Elektron device again. I actually really want this. I think it’s a great update. FAR more of an update than any other MKII they’ve ever released, but they just continue to do dumb shit.

Something you could try, write out all the features of the digitakt, side chain compression, LFO's, p-locks, FX, etc. Just list everything out. Then when you go to get another sheet of paper cause you ran out of room, keep filling it out, then at the bottom write "this is a limited list". Lol. Every box cant be every other box. Digitakt aint the mpc or 404. Yes, wish it had manual slicing but i wish the mpc had LFO's, like real ones with destinations like the Akai force. Gotta evaluate it on your own needs and if manual slicing is what you need, guess you gotta go somewhere else, but everything else kinda move out of the "limited" territory.

Take away the powerful Elektron Sequencer (which I love) and focus solely on the sampling engine and the Digitakt II is pretty underwhelming when compared to other products in the same price range.
