You are a person after my own heart. I’ve come to see that I need to think on paper. Showing visually how you come to digital minimalism in your own life is so helpful. Thank you.

I appreciate your effort in actually visualizing the book for us. Most of the other YT videos are AI-generated even the voice. Yours is more authentic. Plus, you actually included your application of the book's foundations and practices. Thank you for this.

A really helpful video Doug, thanks. I was intrigued by what you meant about "community-shared resource" in relation to YT and podcasts.

Beautiful summary and video. Would you mind sharing more specifically how you eliminated youtube or podcasts from your life? Did you "white knuckle" it or did you use some other strategy like an app blocking program of sorts? I find eliminating these two things to be the most difficult for myself personally.

I think your videos are a great way to find out if you want to delve deeper into a topic. Very cool and inspiring! With this book - I think it's much more complicated why people use devices so compulsively. I watch my teenage kids and their use of technology is very varied. The one that worries me is their use of technology to deal with anxiety - they bury themselves in their phone in order as a coping mechanism and to avoid negative feelings or awkwardness. Would love to hear more about that. (don't know if the book touches on this, just putting it out there 'cause i'm curious...) :)

2:48 Essentialism, minimalism...Netflix? favorite shows? Netflix, ESPN, spectatorism in general should be in the 1st discard pile.

Agree. But…Aren’t you telling us all this using KZitem as your platform? And if I didn’t use KZitem, would I ever found out? Well, I actually follow Cal and his podcasts. See my confusion here?

Yep, that dynamic is not lost on me! The book encourages each person to make their own decisions about which technologies to use and how to use them. For some, the benefits of browsing KZitem are worth the cost. For others, it might not be. Some people might subscribe to certain channels and watch only those videos, others might only come to KZitem when searching for specific how-to's (which Newport even suggests in the book when talking about high-quality leisure and developing a craft). I'm figuring out what works best for me and I'm simply encouraging others to do the same, even if that means not watching my videos!

I agree on it needs to be done, but not your method for me personally. I can go totally without Netflix and I don't have any other streaming thing - Just YT, which I then refuse to go without I just prune my subs every 3 months and get rid of entertainment that snuck in. Podcasts, I listen to one, The Dollop, ain't got time for more - It gives me life, hope and laughter on the way to and from work so I can avoid other people.

Being alone outside in nature really helps you bro, you try to notice everything and take it all in. Also, you are not your thoughts. So, try to just notice them from a third person pov. This kind of meditation really helps. You’ll get through this my dude!
