I don't use social media a lot, but I do use Reddit. Now, I wouldn't call Reddit your average social media, but it's the main issue for me since I end up endlessly scrolling and discovering stuff I never knew existed. I try to justify that the content is educational, but it's really not. I'm actually just wasting my time.

I've read the book and it was absolutely fantastic. Makes you self-aware of how much I am on my phone and it makes you stop and think if what I am actually doing is benefiting me. I use Digital Well-being on my S10 to set daily timers for Reddit (15 minutes) and I've completely removed Facebook from my phone. I still have the account and I checked it for the first time this month and believe me when I say this, I didn't miss out on anything. So now I've taken the time that I would have used for Social Media and put it towards reading books I have always wanted to read. It's a very small step and there is always room for improvement but the results have been nothing but good. Excellent video!

I like the book review concept. I don’t get through as many books as I’d like to, still feel so preoccupied.. I’ve gotten quieter with what I put out too. I feel like I’ve lost a ton of attention, but nothing feels worth saying. Everyone is already drowning in too much of everything. I feel like some kind of Black Mirror puppet by playing a game for views/likes. It would be cool to hear more about this from your perspective on the creator side, not just as a consumer. Also you’ll love Meditations. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read 3/4ths of and then not finished.
@TrentSiggard
5 жыл бұрын
Let me start out by saying that it is extremely warming to know you are feeling this too, and that I'm not alone. As a creator, I know that the act of creation as an alpha state. It's where we're processing things to make sense of them and untimely to share our findings with others. My dilemma is, why should I add more content out into the ethos if that content is only going to keep people in beta states and a slave to their addiction to consumption or the platform I am sharing on. Ultimately people will consume whether they consume my content or not. So at this point maybe I feel like I'm trying to save humanity and that's not my job. I'd rather give people something of substance to consume (like this video) than something that just holds attention while you're watching and allows you to move on to the next thing. I'm coming up on two months without social media (aiming for Jaron Lanier's 6 months suggestion) and I haven't gotten back on simply because I am so conflicted. I'm sub'd two you now. I hope you share your journey.

Love the vid. Question!! What if social media is your job, wouldn't consuming a good amount be substantial to helping improve ideation and creation? Especially if you're a budding creator it's important to keep churning and producing in that sense right? If you're established I guess you can slow down on some of it and go on that minimalism journey. But it's almost impossible from my perspective to "do minimalism" before "having anything to begin with". Thoughts? Thanks :)

I’m 20 now, and quit social media when I was 15 (also the height of my anxiety). I don’t watch TV either (personal preference). None of this felt particularly ‘rewarding’ at first, I just went cold turkey and felt just fine without it. But over the years, I noticed I’d started to develop relationships with people differently, at my own pace, getting to know them upon first meeting instead of through their Facebook/instagram profiles. I’d also become way more content with myself, knowing I can enjoy my day how I want to. If I didn’t do much, that settled just fine with me; doing “nothing” for a day felt more like doing something, instead of scrolling for hours. There won’t be a trophy waiting for you when you quit or limit your time on social media, but in incremental ways it does help, such as enjoying other things more, getting closer to those around you, finding things out about yourself you didn’t know existed!

MORE MORBID SILENCE: Oh, I yearn for the dawn before daybreak. Where there is nothing but my own breath. Alas, what a blessing it is to hear one's breath before daybreak if one is so inclined to be blessed to hear. Yes, to awake from the darkness, to see the light and escape from the ETERNAL DARKNESS that tries to encompass me. YES, another daybreak, another escape. This day I shall grasp, before the inevitable tangle with darkness.

Minimalism, in my point of view, has to be crossed with an intentional thinking about everything we do. Not in order of becoming crazy and maniac but in a traditional philosophical goal. We have to ask ourselves about what we do, how we do it - at every level of our lives. This secular way of thinking helpw create a virtous circle of thinking and self-improvement.

A detox is a solution, but it’s not *the* solution. I’ve fasted from social medias for over 50 days last year, including KZitem (I had gone without social medias before for a few days or a couple of weeks, but was still using KZitem). It was an amazing experience. Honestly, I saw so many benefits from being away from social media. I did have a hard week or so of binging a lot of Netflix towards the middle of my fast, during which I was clearly trying to make up for the lack of scrolling in my life... After only a day into the fast, I felt like I had so, so much more free time. After a few days, I was way less anxious. After a week or so, I became a lot more social. I reached out to friends through texts (yes, I know, but I don’t usually stay in touch at all and have a lot of long distance friendships). I called my family more often. I invited friends over. I went out for walks. It sounds cliché but I tried fighting the boredom and fill in my free time with things, and there were such great things! At the end of the fast, I wasn’t in a hurry to log into my social medias, but when I did... I kind of managed to stay away from it for a week or so, but then I got sucked right back into my old habits of scrolling and spending around 4 or 5 hours a day on my phone. There. I guess I need to detox for life. Detox for a few days will not work for everybody. It’s like alcohol. Some alcoholics can recover and start drinking again without falling back into bad habits, some have to stop for the rest of their life.

It's gotten to the point some days I feel sick from being so deep into it but I can't seem to let go, and when I do try I feel anxiousness to go back to my phone to the television or my computer and step away from the present I don't like 😕

I agree with a lot of this. And I get not wanting to consume news anymore, as it can be incredibly overwhelming lately. But if you want to build empathy and join the "resistance," you need to be somewhat up to date on what's happening in the world. For Kraig especially, I hope he's at least keeping up with news related to climate change, laws regarding how tech corporations are using our data, and how people of color are being mis-treated in this country. I hope he doesn't continue to shun ALL news, but just like everything else, is intentional about the news he does consume as it relates to his life and the values he claims to care about.

Although I've gone back to using more social media over the summer, where I can relax and don't waste time on it so much from not using it during school. What personally helped was making it as difficult as possible for me to access things I didn't want myself wasting time on. Also what I did was start watching documentaries on youtube, which for me gave in to the craving for watching videos but also actually helped me learn. Although I'm letting myself "regress" during the summer, these are my plans for when the school year starts again.. Hope it helps you
