I’m a self taught designer, the creative space always interested me so I pushed myself to learn everyday. I got into the industry working as a junior level web designer for a small design agency 5 years ago. At that time I was really struggling, only earning 15k a year salary. 3 years later, I was able to move up to a mid level and then senior level UI/UX designer at a larger consulting firm and increased my salary to about 150k a year. Today I’m a proud to be a Product Design Lead earning over 225K per year (from my 9-5 base salary + bonuses and side business).

I can say that most of the things in the video are true. BUT the most important thing is to be passionate and fascinated by what you do and be willing to sacrifice your free time for what you want. I'm 22 and a UI/UX designer for digital products for innovation management in the international market and I'm burning for my passion and the possibility to conceptualize, design and develop user journeys for clients. Love this job❤️💚

As a seasoned designer of 20 years (brand, concept, ux/ui) i fully agree with the advice in this video. It’s equally important to understand it’s a journey. Sometimes it’s worth starting out at a company on a lesser salary to gain experience. Then move on (working for yourself, or another agency) to bigger and better things.

This has been something on my mind for a few years now. I have been watching a lot of your videos and this one here got the engine going. I have been a graphic designer for 10 years now not really going all in or giving it my all. I feel like this is my calling though. I am going to follow your 12 steps and hopefully at the end of this year I can call myself a Product Designer! Thank you for the great content!

Summary:- 1. Take a course 2. Learn a tool (Figma/ Adobe XD) 3. Start Designing 4. Get Feedback 5. Fundamentals 6. Large Project 7. Free Job 8. Portfolio 9. Network 10. Hone skills 11. Apply
@MapleLeafAce

Could probably remove some of the steps too. Doing free jobs is kind of a waste of time. You're better off just trying to make good portfolio projects and getting feedback from people you know. Overall it's just practice; your first portfolio piece will probably stink. Make another one. Build your knowledge. Lastly, networking is a dubious one. The odds of you making a useful insider connection if you've literally never been in the industry before is like scaling Everest. Everyone is trying to network with someone who's already in, but very few who are already in actually want to network with you. In that regard, just apply for as many jobs as possible once you feel you have a compelling portfolio. Its just a numbers game.

Thanks for the usefull information! Im learning UX/UI design already via youtube videos and as a +10years digitar artist and designer, im doing good with figma, wireframing, prototyping, etc, u mentioned about learn Figma and adobe xd, still learning and improving every day as everything in life. I want you to correct me if im wrong, but there (figma and adobe xd) we only get prototypes to show how an app will look when gets functional and there is where the UX/UI work stops? and to make it native and functional is a work for another experts as developers? Im learning bravo/airtable/API´s in order to get my prototypes into real apps (and its quite hard that for me than learning figma i must confess), im following the right path or for UX/UI position its good enough if we can use well figma? Learn to make the apps functional is a extra tool of developing besides the knowledges that i need to know for the UX/UI design industry? Thanks for your time and all the knowledge that you share!

Great question. Do you already know the answer?
@MapleLeafAce
Жыл бұрын
To answer your question: UX and UI design as a job role does not really entail coding anything. Your role is to figure out what the user flow needs to be, and then design how it will look aesthetically. Once your team agrees on a design, it is handed off to the front and back end devs who then do the coding.

Me: *already doing all of this* Also me: *600+ applications 50+ interviews and no offers* What do I do when the only feedback I ever get from interviews is “you don’t have the experience we’re looking for”? Im going on 3 years of job search and I have no idea what I’m doing wrong if anything. When I ask career advisors they say it’s just competitive, when I ask established people they don’t get how I haven’t been hired yet. When I ask peers they say my work is great. Said it before, gonna say it again. UI/UX DESIGNERS ARE NOT PRODUCT DESIGNERS !!!! It is a misnomer that snowballed out of control but remains wrong nonetheless. Physical object designers are called product designers, period. I'm willing to die on this hill.
@LotusKay36
2 жыл бұрын
“Product” can refer to physical or digital both. A UI/UX designer certainly would not design a chair for example but we do design digital products e.g. websites, web apps, mobile apps.
@fakesiyanda

@shirishkr.8100

@@LotusKay36 With all due respect, by that logic literally everything should be under the PD category. From fashion to vfx to the entirety of of the IT sector. Isn't all of reality either digital or physical ? In my opinion UIX should either be classified under Graphic Design or as a separate category on it's own, judging by it's impressive growth rate. UIX is NOT Product Design.
@LotusKay36
2 жыл бұрын
@@shirishkr.8100 Fair enough, people in the industry call it Product Design, my current job title is PD Lead. Not saying that I don’t see your point though but it just is what it is at the end of the day. I don’t see UI/UX as Graphic Design however. With GD you could be designing a brochure, business card or other artifacts that don’t heavily focus on the user journey/experience which is what UI/UX is all about.
