@@ocaudiophile I know the basics of REW and also have expirence with MSO (Multi Sub Optimizer)and a miniDSP 2x4HD. I also got MultEQ-X and watching Movies in Atmos, DTSX and Auro a lot. So I want to know how to make the best use of the features of MultEQ-X in combination with REW and MSO for Music and Films. In a nutshell. But I have to watch all your videos first to be more precise. I think the main problem could be, that I can only use FIR at the software side right now which means it doesn't work with Atmos and so on and has a huge delay. But I will try to make it work for music first.

@@ocaudiophile Some edit to my last post and some clarification: I use Auro3D up-mixing 95% of the time when watching films or listening to music. So before I get separate amplifiers for my 8500HA I can not integrate external DSP and therefor can not access the height layer output for filtering except through MultEQ-X, I think. Also because of the up-mixing I can not use software DSP for the floor layer because it would also effect the height layer, I think. So in conclusion I can only use my AVR options and MultEQ-X and I will watch Supreme Audyssey Calibration by OCA next.

I've made REW sweeps for Atmos channels, you'll find them in all Audyssey videos so measuring height channels is not a problem. However, you're limited to GEQ in the Denon for correction. The only way to use FIR filters is to hack Audyssey through the Multeq editor app.

Hi All, OCA makes a valid point to spend time on the placement of the loudspeakers, especially with toe-in values. Its really difficult to accurately measure an angle of the toe -in to the LP, that I have used the Apple iPhone compass app. By taking a degree measurement of the front facing wall and then placing the phone on the speaker front edge can then add or subtract the angle of the speaker very accurately. I find I get both the speakers with equal toe-in. Once you can do this easily, then experimenting with the audio tracks mentioned (9:45) to find the optimum toe-in for your speaker and the distance well worth the effort. I believe the more accurate the placement from walls, toe-in and LP distance the less work the DSP has to do and a better result you make end up with. One word of advice. Preserve with your experimentation, re-listen to the video, take more measurement readings and select the averages. Don't give up. Although OCA does say it should not take long to perform the measurements, you will always get something not quite right. So do it all again. If you follow the instructions, and double check your results, at the end you will have something only very few "audiophiles" have near perfect reproduction. OCA has put so much of his time to give us this economical opportunity to get the best from whatever equipment we have, we owe it to him to be a good pupil and get top marks. Hi OCA, I enjoy your videos very much. Thanks for all the hard work! I have a small question regarding some inconsistency between the way your perform the measurements and what is stated on REW's website. In this video you run multiple measurements with a USB mic as input and a DAC as an output. and the REW states the following: "REW allows multiple sweeps to be averaged, although best results are generally obtained by using single, longer sweeps rather than multiple, shorter sweeps. Multiple sweeps are offered when not using a Timing reference or when using a loopback as a timing reference. Do not use multiple sweeps if the input and output are on different devices (for example, if the input is a USB mic). If Repetitions is more than 1 REW uses synchronous pre-averaging, capturing the selected number of sweeps per measurement and averaging the results to reduce the effects of noise and interference. The pre-averaging can improve S/N by almost 3 dB for each doubling of the number of sweeps. Averaging can be useful if the measurements are contaminated by interference tones, whether electrical or acoustic, as they typically will not add coherently in the averaging and hence will be suppressed by the process." - www.roomeqwizard.com/help/help_en-GB/html/makingmeasurements.htm can you please shine some light on the topic? Thanks a lot!
@ocaudiophile

I couldn't get the link above opened but multiple sweeps mentioned there must be for RTA or multiple mic measurements. REW doesn't average regular measurements on its own but gives user a lot of averaging options instead. Longer and louder sweeps will always have better signal to noise ratio but they will still benefit from repeating and averaging.

Really fantastic information. I cannot work with FIR at the moment. I play with different systems which only provide PEQ. Does it make sense to produce minimum phase responses before applying REWs PEQ filter calculations? Or - as another idea - is there a way to follow your method and calculate best possible PEQ-filters from your FIR-filters. That would be really interesting. Additionally, applying DSP to cheaper and older systems (cheap amp, old speakers) often require some more DSPing in the upper frequencies (often to bright relative to basse). I receive good results but loose a lot of headroom and sometimes the corrections are as high as 8db. Just as a note: In my main system, I use better hardware (a Lyngdorf TDAI-2170 amp, Harbeth P3ESR XDs and 2 Aperion Bravus 12 subs). I am always looking forward to your videos. For me, there is a problem in understanding the methodology and following your algorithm because: - I'm not native English - you speak fast and move your mouse even faster :) To somehow cope with this, I make my outline step by step with screenshots. In order not to miss anything, I make a start-stop of your video almost every second. Video length is not a problem. The problem is not losing accuracy. And I have a question. My acoustics is Dynadio 40 Shecial. According to information from the network, it has a first-order crossover of 6dB. But rePhase has a minimum of 12. Do you have any ideas how to get around this limitation?

You can create an 18dB/oct phase filter with a time and polarity inverted 1st order AllPass but there's no way in rePhase to produce a 6dB/oct filter. I guess Tom thought any crossover filter will have a minimum of a capacitor and an inductor which is 2nd order already.

OCA, in one video you said that the method is difficult because there is a high chance of human error. For me, this is 100 percent true. But I'll be persistent because I like the level of this solution - instead of post-removal of acoustic-room interaction by amplitude correction, you develop a FIR-based method that eliminates the very nature of the problem. This procedure will give the best results with the equipment you have: 1. Measure each speaker and the sub separately with REW+Umik using acoustic timing reference (should be the same speaker for all measurements) and clock adjustment with acoustic reference. 2. Time align both speakers and the sub at the LP and crossover speakers around their spec bass roll off frequency and dial these settings in the MiniDSP 3. Re-measure left and right speaker this time with the sub active and crossed over. 4. In REW EQ select MiniDSP and 2x4HD, upload a house curve (I'd recoomend Dr Toole's curve- you can find that in most of my video description links), "Match target to response", and "Match response to target" with settings 20Hz-200Hz, 0dB boost, Allow narrow filters below 200Hz ticked. "Export filter settings" which will generate biquad filters (a1,b1,....) which you can directly upload to MiniDSP. 5. Optionally, you can create crossover phase correction filters in rePhase for your particular speakers, save them with 1024 taps, 96KHz, .bin format and use that filter in MiniDSP FIR. Even with 1024 taps, you could still apply descent high frequency crossover phase correction. PS If you use your PC as the convolution engine, you could do better by using high taps of full FIR filters.

Yes, Linkwitz-Riley filetrs with 24dB/octave roll off around 50-60Hz is a good starting point but feel free to test other roll offs and filters. Yes, biquads are IIR filters (you can also do allpass filters with biquads and I have a MiniDSP video on that but time-reversed all-pass which you need for phase linearization is not possible with 2x4HD) Most active speakers still need some phase linearization especially for box and port (these are too low frequency for 1024 taps though but no harm in checking). I think, you can use "Merge cal file to IR" in REW to embed the min phase mic cal file to old measurements.

I wasn't able to apply DSP in any car so far as most cars these days already come with factory installed systems with no user input allowed. However, I seem to be getting extremely confused while carrying it out myself. Even a 3dB boost to my sub seems to mean that my crossover point with that main speaker changes... not to mention the time alignment, phase correction etc... Also with the miniDSP it seems like one cannot apply a negative delay, which is what I think is required for the subs since they arrive at the LP later than the main speakers. I try to achieve is by applying positive delay to the main speakers instead, to compensate for the subs. But if I apply different delays to the left and right speakers, the sound seems to be much louder on one than on the other. Moreover, the delay setting on the miniDSP does not seem to correspond to what REW is measuring... Many thanks in advance.

Woofer's polarity is inverted. I would say (with a wild guess) XO frequencies are 145Hz and 1150Hz. Filters orders can be found by trying different combinations in rephase using those frequencies.

@@ocaudiophile You mean that each driver measurement needs to be adjusted to the same volume level ? Or what should I measure correctly? If possible, I would like to re-measure it for you to check.Thanks again!

I am not aware of an optimal method. I had seen articles on correctly stitching driver measurements but couldn't find one just now, check DIY forums.@@WallaceChen

It's a bit dated but the method is still optimal: kzitem.info/news/bejne/yJdoy4Otg4Sli6Qsi=QxfM-3Jvh4dDXgpD

There's one for aligning subs between each other.

asio4all sucks for introducing a lot of latency. why don't you use the original asio comes from your dac/audio interface?

rew does not recognize the acoustic time reference beep for my sub because its a high frequency noise what should i do ?
@ocaudiophile

That's usually because of sample rate difference between input and output. Make sure everything is at 48kHz in Windows sound settings. Or switch to ASIO drivers.

@@ocaudiophile i dont have problem with the sweep itself , i have a problem with the acoustic time reference when measuring the sub because i have to turn off main speakers channel to measure only the sub .

If you connect your PC to the receiver with an HDMI cable and select LFE channel with REW Java EXCL drivers, the sweep will only go to subwoofer. You do not need to unplug your main speakers.@@Motymott99

Anyone have any idea how, in RePhase, to handle speaker designs like the Zu Dirty Weekend? They claim that their single driver is ‘cross less’ until 12khz, and the a special twitter takes over. Should this even count as a crossover in RePhase? And what about the portless~design? It speaker has slits that open to the floor, I’m not sure that those count as ports… Any insight appreciated. Thx.

You will need a phase linearization filter at 12kHz for sure. The bos is a bit too complicated to know in advance but with carefully time aligned multiple measurements, bass phase response canbe extracted and problems manually corrected.

Thank you! I'm a total newbie here, so will need to figure out what all that means (especially how to extract the bass phase response), but this is a good tip for a start. Thank you. @@ocaudiophile

Hello, I have carried out step by step the measurements and generation of filters explained in kzitem.info/news/bejne/lo-Zrmuga199ZI4. The result is very good, when you look at the results of the response correction, but when listening to it I notice an absence of bass... is this correction less recommended than those suggested in Workshop 1 and 2? Thank you!

Yes, this is a simpler and quicker method but you can adjust bass strength with the target curve bass shape
