The stalker part was deliberately put in the movie The two leads are metaphorical characters. Meghana (The North east and Kashmir) constantly rejects Amar (The Indian state). Amar(The Indian state) sees her dangerous, and, beautiful at the same time, pursues her obsessively. Amar( The Indian State) tries to constantly 'save' her( North East-Kashmir) but, for his own desires, blindly often, and doesn't understand her motives. His pursuit only leads both of them to their ends but, also how he ended up in destruction, for his own questionable actions. So the movie suggests that The Indian state's obsession with Kashmir and the North -East will ultimately lead to the demise of both Kashmir and The Indian State.

Eternal Verve + which explains why the movie failed. It deserves to fail. India is not obsessed with Kashmir, Pakistan is. And without India's help Kashmir would end up like Syria. And north east would be captured by China. The director's intentions were wrong at the time and that's why he failed to convince the audience with this story

Late to this discussion but it is coz 'those' channels simply watch trailers and react. Bollywood content is 'in' these days. Most of them don't even bother to learn how to pronounce names and read about the topic. It's much easier to get eyeballs by concentrating on 'viral videos'. I'm surprised at the effort Jimmy and Deniz put in their videos. If they'd start nodding their heads to new Indian movies/ songs, only praise what they see then you'll see loads of views and subscribers. I hope they don't change, hopefully subs will increase nonetheless :)

Good review This movie is a clear representation of few categories of men at that point in time in India, who believed in persuasion to get love. This movie was a big hit outside of India. Toping UK charts at that time, giving completion to Saving Private Ryan Movie. Has a cult following globally with many women liking it. You should ask a women watch with you, they would have a different take on the subject matter. People who like commercial movies say Maniratnam movies sometimes are slow and those who love parallel movies say that he adds too much of commercial elements...but the fact he has always made people on both sides watch his movies, that is unique about him Although Bombay is known to be part of the triology, it is not...it is about Hindu Muslim riots...the movie which is part of the triology on terrorism is Kanathil Muthanital, movie depicting LTTE in Srlianka...good movie, but heavily nuanced...probably you can review Iruvar next

Thank you very much for this review. I have been asking for this since a long time. You were right, some time Sharukh Khan over did it. That is why his recent movies didn't work. But at that time he was a heart throb of nation. We were just dying to see him... and he was braver then... He was doing experimental films. Now days he chooses the safest story, biggest banner and all.

So it is suggested that SRK symbolises "mainland" India and Manisha represents areas in Northeast of India under insurgency ( the state/region isn't specified in the film) - so there is an element of coercion to the relationship. I rewatched the film last week and initially was uncomfortable by SRK's stalking - but then read this take and wondered if it was a conscious choice by Mani Ratnam. If so would that would make casting SRK all the more interesting - the quintessential romantic hero who is charming (as the central govt often tries to be) but fails to respect Manisha's agency and struggle (as the government does as well).

7:22 bro just to correct you, that 2nd track was not happening in real, it was just imagination showcasing the supposed love between Amar and Meghna in a tumultuous setting. From the lyrics, i get the idea that Mani Ratnam wanted to show that how two people who loved each other were not able to pursue it due to whatever was happening in their lives(the military, revolution) and what otherwise could have been possible had their been no such situation and compulsion in the life of Meghna. And the message was that no matter how many hardships(seasons) two hearts have to endure, ultimately they do unite which was shown in the climax when they die together which even though appears like a tragedy but can also be viewed as final union of two souls after all the hardships. Similar subcontinental folk story like this is Laila-Majnu where both die but are understood to be united forever afterlife from a spiritual standpoint. Appreciate you guys for such a detailed review of this gem when other reviewers have been sleeping on this.

So, I will never forget watching this movie that sleepless december night on german TV way back in 2006. I had read on several Bollywood forums (yeah, I was a very sophisticated 12-year old) about how extremely depressing that ending is - and yet they (rightfully) never actually told what happened. I was totally in love with this movie from the get go - and as I said in my previous comment, I find this movie basically flawless, and that is rare that I would say that about a indian movie. Anyway, after the movie ended, I went to bed and had tears flowing from my eyes. I recently rewatched it after 10 years, and I realised that this is one of those movies where I have to sit through the end credits. A. R. Rahmans soundtrack is also just perfect - and I wish the background score would get an official release like Veer Zaara did back in the day.

I don't think so...the movie deliberately wasn't plot oriented and focussed on moods(feelings) and was abstract.It was a departure from Mani ratnam's previous directorial style.We should see the movie for what it is(the director's vision).It's a masterwork....of course Iruvar is better but both are very differently approached and can't be compared.

I've been waiting for someone to review this masterpiece. I was very young when I first saw this but living in Iran, I could never find the original without censorship and dub. This movie wasn't age appropriate for me for sure but it enchanted me. Years after I finally was able to watch the whole movie it was so exhilarating. Shah rukh Khan is definitely amazing but I think the overeating you're referring to which bothers me too is kind of specific to Indian cinema which is a shame because these people are very talented and the premise of these movies are often amazing which can't be appreciated as they could because this obsession with overeating and often huge plot holes or things that doesn't make sense at all. When I first saw this movie I didn't know any better and I didn't think there was anything wrong with Shah rukh's obsession with Megna but watching it later I realized that was the definition of stalking and even harassment in the beginning. However I think as someone who writes short stories occasionally, I think it's pretty hard to show the story of someone being infatuated with another person without it being something of a crime and promoting it. Because some people actually enjoy the pain and drama of love and in a way invite that kind of behaviour and as wrong as it is in general that is understood between the two of the people in love. This review was great and fun to watch and I'm so happy I've just found your channel. Keep up the good work.

Hi Jimmy and Dennis, I saw this review twice and disagree with it at several levels: 1) The movie was a bore because except good visuals, I do not see it as a riveting story. The problem with many Mani Ratnam movies is that story and screenplay are sacrificed at the altar of visuals and sound, especially movies in the latter half of his career. DIl Se was one such movie which bombed at the box office 2) The movie eulogized terrorism in many places. Every terrorist will have a reasons or back story but how does that justify killing of innocents or waging war on a country. Such justifications should be abhorred and rejected. India has been a victim of terrorism for several years ... any movie which even remotely justifies terrorist activities is not a joke for Indians. 3) The storyline tried hard to portray Manisha as a victim of circumstances rather than as a cold blooded revenge taker. Her character was a bundle of contradictions because of which her character never evoked empathy I can go on ... my negative comments are only on this review. Otherwise, I enjoy your comments and usually agree with them. This time ...cannot agree.
@TheJimmyCage
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Murli. I'm always happy to see your name pop up in the comment section. :) As you know it's completely okay not to always agree, especially with something as subjective as art/movies. 1) I agree that the story and screenplay weren't enough to carry the movie for its almost 3 hour runtime. But I think in general Mani Ratnam appeals so much to me (of course I've only seen two movies so far) are the visuals and the sound as I tend to be someone who ranks a film's "style/presentation" extremely highly. Of course it should serve story and characters but if a movie grabs me by its unique/outstanding presentation I'm willing to forgive a lot of shortcomings. 2) I wasn't under the impression that the movie justifies killing in any way. I think there's a huge difference between justifiying horrible things (I had this problem with the Hindi movie A Wednesday) and showing different sides to complex topics. Of course I have no personal connection like most Indians do, but for me it's a better approach to try to understand a certain side, only then can we move forward and tackle the reasons and origins behind that hate and hopefully change for the better in the future. 3) For me she was both and I think many times people are a bundle of contradictions. ;)
