Had an "82 Wide Glide with a 98" motor and stock pressure plate with heavier springs all around and never a problem. Motor was built by Bob Mauriello. Look him up. As I mentioned before, a call to Tatro and you'd likely have a pushrod in hand that is correct in a matter of days.

Needs hardened because the rod is hardened. I'd even lap the two mating surfaces together on both ends, thats just how i do mine. That ensures both mating surfaces make good contact. MAKE SURE YOU GREASE BOTH TIPS PRIOR TO REASSEMBLING IT!

Now the bowl itself that has the threads that goes into the pressure plate was not hardened drilled make the pocket wasn't overly hard so I don't think it was hardened. But I understand what you're saying. Think I'll do this route first and if it fails then I'm going to go with the larger throwout bearing. For better words of lamp shade it's currently a retrofit

Im learning some things from watching. This is not so familiar to me as Im a long time Sporster owner. Had a 1975 1000 and now a 2009 1200. Looks like you will have your shovel back on the road soon 👍

@@MoeLarrycurly1 my 75 was kickstart only also. liked to kick back and tear up my knee. The 2009 is much better and it keeps up fairly well with the big bikes. Your 74 was a right side shift. My 75 was first year for left shift but had funky linkage to do it 😆

This is above my pay grade. But, my instincts say yes. It will be too soft in the long run.

Now when the local dealer was at its small shop here in South bend on lincolnway West the old Lincoln highway.. there was a mechanic there and he was show me you could really talk to you know you could go back and talk to the guys in the shop and so forth.. and he told me that they well I stopped by and ask them if I had if they had a used pushrod.. they even at that time looked at me kind of funny as I only need one yeah I know there's four in a set but I only need one I bent one. Of course they didn't sell just one but he the mechanic told me they used to have a motorcycle junkyard when he started there .. can I started going there in the late seventies.. can you imagine today going to a Harley-Davidson dealer and they would have stuff out back you could just run it through that was in your wrecked yard.. that ain't going to happen anytime soon

That seems to be a 5-speed throwout bearing setup. Is that a four-speed clutch basket if so there is a kit to convert to both.
@MoeLarrycurly1

Jim's 5 speed gears in sputhe cases . The clutch basket if I remember how my shovelheads go it's yes a four-speed but it has five fingers. What state is the three finger adjustment like it was and it has an aluminum pressure plate. So I'm not sure if it's a spline shaft. Or a tapered shaft for the clutch basket like they used to use. Haven't pulled that off . Really hope not till this winter cuz I'll fix the leak in the inner primary behind the starter at that time

When you mix parts from different manufacturers to upgrade, you need to be resourceful. Not sure why you need a stronger clutch plate. I don’t think you’ll need to harden the adjusting pin. It’s not under pressure all the time.

Not a stronger clutch plate .. pressure plate .. motor 88 in stroker so there is more power ...and alternate red and stock spring on pressure plate
