This was a great video. I started playing about a month ago and ive been watching a ton of content and hearing about diminishing returns and I was super confused because not getting the optimal stat increases is something completely unrelated to a diminishing return lol. Opportunity cost makes a lot more sense. Your character isnt getting diminishing returns if you roll HP on every increase, youre just missing out on something that couldve been better.

Language is prescriptive, not descriptive. At least in the context of genshin, dimishing returns is always talked about using the plot of sub_stat rolls vs %dmg increase graph, instead of the traditional time vs money plot for good reason, and it's as you explained. The optimization landscape is very restricted and everyone can reach that cap fairly easily unlike in finance where you can only dream of getting 100% of the money from the economy (which is even a bad thing for the business kek). People simply use "true diminishing returns" to decontextualize the term to refer to its traditional definition of the second derivative being less than 0.

What bothers me about advices like 'disregarding atk as a substat' and cv (in general) is that they always assume that the person receiving that advice already has access to all the ideal artifact peices they will ever need. Realistically speaking, this is almost always never the case in Genshin. It only took me a couple of runs of the Genshin Optimizer to realize that, at any given moment, a lot of my 'non-ideal' artifact peices were actually much more valuable than I initially thought based on commonly accepted guidelines. Another thing I've learned from using the optimizer is that focusing on reaction-based damage is not always ideal and should only be conserved for units that can reliably cause reactions throughout their rotation.

Genshin stats don’t diminish except for em and er. It’s opportunity cost that people talk about when it comes to diminishing returns on linear scaling stats like atk, because 10k atk might give 10k dmg, but 5k atk and 100% cd is also 10k dmg but way easier to achieve and allows for other stats to fill the slots, meaning more damage, so we say that the atk stat has diminishing returns on opportunity cost

So the first step is allocating stats into equivalent damage units; then, using those units, we make a 5 dimensional hypercube and optimize for hypervolume. The biggest hypervolume of equivalent units is our optimal damage spread, but the optimal hypervolume is going to be at stat unit equivalency of all stats, so once we’ve found the equivalent unit calculations, we’re good, so long as no stat’s damage units are based on the equivalent value of another units… oh wait. So we do have to optimize a hypervolume, but it’s no longer a cube… time to set up some systems of equations.

While your representation of diminishing returns was good. you failed to specify the relation between different stats. How much Crit value does 100 EM equates to in a Vape setup ? How much Generic damage % (Elemental on goblet/PJS/Yelan's A4, Furina's burst, etc) is worth ? Everyone says 1:2 rario for crit but they fail to establish a relation between other factors. As always, use Genshin optimizer kids.

I never understood the purpose of min-maxing for casual players. If you're a casual player you probably don't strive to 36* the abyss, maybe it's a distant goal but not a priority. If so, then... you don't need insane stuff. And you probably don't have insane stuff to begin with, because you're a casual player, you probably don't grind the game too hard or spend to get the god pieces. So my advice is, as a fellow casual: Understand the character you're building, maybe use tools like the optimizer to see how your planned builds do. Then get alright pieces. If it doesn't roll bad, it's good. Use your good pieces, you'll come across better pieces eventually, don't force it. You don't need a 70-200 ratio to clear the majority of the content with ease. You don't need a 1000 EM to see good reaction damage. And you definitely don't need to hit 200-700k with one burst. Don't get too stressed about stats and numbers. This is a game, not your tax report. Enjoy playing and don't stress yourself out by worrying about the numbers.

yeah 1:30 in this video is complete bait just stop watching it. ofc having 100% attack substats is gonna be exactly 10 times higher than 10% attack in a vacuum but where this actually matters is at the final number, where you definitely see diminishing returns. your definition of diminishing returns is just different and wrong

Your diminishing return definition is not the commonly used one, so you should have used another term. Especially considering that additive percentage based increases are the most common occurence of ""true" diminishing return in games (what genshin does). What you describe as dimishing return is much more rare.
