I’ve had that anomaly appear many times using Dullcote and other Matt finishes. It comes up when the medium was sprayed over a part that had IPA applied. It’s the talc in the medium. Glad you didn’t apply another coat of medium after the part crazed because that would have made it disappear. Love your work Boomer!! Your skills are mind boggling.

That effect is like one that I did to a frame I made for one of my scenic B & W prints. I made the frame and painted it black but ran out of the spray paint. So I used a different brand, sprayed the frame, and almost instantly all of the pint bubbled up and I thought that the frame was going to have to be striped to the bare wood. It dried and I love it and have had it on the wall for the past 20 years. I had it in my studio and several clients wanted to know if I could get them the same paint effect. Your roof looks great - it looks so real. I have had several buildings with just that effect on the flat roofs. Sometimes the more you look at a mistake, the better it starts to look. The brick in back doesn't even need any more detail, really...

A delightful "happy accident"! One of those things that would be hard to replicate. It reminds me a little of my younger modeling days. One would finish the decals and then shoot a coat of Dullcote on a humid day and the talc in the Dullcoate would leave a white powdery layer. Sometimes it would enhance a weathered effect, but often there was muttering of "son of a..." and one would consider the model ruined. Your anomaly has a gorgeous weathering effect that should enhance a fine model.

A fortunate anomaly indeed. You had your very own Bob Ross moment, “You have to allow the paint to break to make it beautiful.” 😃
Dear Boomer, absolutely love how the diner is turning out. Great to see the anomaly of the Vallejo clear varnish. Agree on the level of surprise and also where the unexpected at first seems to thwart the expectation, before being able to fully honor the anomaly of surprise. Wonder though if it can be reproduced!! Looking forward to your next iteration. Cheerio
@boomerdiorama
Жыл бұрын
You can reproduce this but not in a reliable or predictable sense. It's the same as applying Vallejo washes in multiple passes, one is never sure what they will get in terms of fidelity. But, it's the practice and doctrine of application that produces consistent results when you apply an established methodology - something I have been preaching all along. ;-)

I had that anomaly with one brand of matte varnish on one model and like you I was initially distressed but ultimately pleasantly surprised. The building was a derelict brick factory background flat based on the Model Buildings Hart Steel Co paper and card download. I added brick piers, heaps of pipes and other stuff to created some depth to the model and when it was finished, like always I gave it a spray. Went milky like on yours and I thought “Well that’s a few hours of modelling down the drain”. But I didn’t throw it away and after it dried it looked really derelict, with a crumbling brick finish I could never create from scratch. I love it now, and I keep that can of spray varnish aside for the next derelict model I want to build.
@boomerdiorama

It is cool when it happens this way. This Vallejo (Spray Can) Matte varnish has causes similar reactions before. What is strange is that I thought it was the IPA base that caused the anomaly - which it did on the walls. On the other hand, when I used it on the roof, where I only used water, it did the same thing. This is why I love art. One never knows unless they take risks through practice. I mean, in the end one could always cover it up. Not in this case though. ;-) Cheers.

Hey! Love the music! You can't always be in control of everything. There are too many variables in what we do (and we all suffer from AMS -- Advanced Modellers' Syndrome -- which demands perfection). On the other hand you have to be prepared for what actually happens and take advantage of potential opportunities. That weathered slat roof looks amazing. You're out in rainforest land so I might want to add a green moss-wash, bit the basic colour and texture are stunning. Squadron used to make a matte finish in a spray can and it used to go opaque like this every once in a while -- no idea why. I was building military models back then and just weathered my way through it. But I was always aware of the potential for disaster when I picked up the can.
@boomerdiorama

I had the good fortune to let go of AMS when I worked in the film industry and had no luxury of time. I learned and gained a wealth of experience, (through taking risks), as a scenic painter in the one-to-one world of film and theater (shooting muddy water) as they say, while avoiding mud. Then I simply transferred the skill to the miniature world. ;-)

A very interesting video, Boomer. I've used the Vallejo Acrylic Flat Varnish (mostly on structures), but I could never get it to perform to my satisfaction. I switched to Mr. Super Clear Matt spray lacquer and have been very happy with it. Your success with the Vallejo suggests that I'm the real problem here, but the Mr. Super Clear has always come out looking good. The down side is that it's ridiculously expensive, so now I use it sparingly and only on rolling stock and locos. I still have a couple of cans of the Vallejo and will try it again, especially since it is Boomer Approved. By the way, your last video inspired me to try building an HO utility sink that will be displayed as a discarded item on a junk pile. It was "carved" from a piece of 0.25 x 0.25 plastic with a Dremel. It came out well, but I decided to buy some HO toilets after I realized just how small they are. :-) They will make interesting pallet loads on a loading dock. Cheers from Wisconsin!

@@boomerdiorama I started in the early 60's painting model cars and airplanes using Testor's enamal model paints. If I could keep the brush strokes down the paint job usually turned out pretty nice. Because of this painting is something I usually hated to do. Painting for model railroad came with my second layout in the early 80's. That was usually a hit and miss also. I did not start using an airbrush until I got back into RC Airplanes in 2005. This was primarily to add custom markings to identify my plane from the others while in the air. This, because of the cheap paints I was using, was also hit or miss. When I started back into model railroading, 4 years ago, is when I started playing with water based paints and using layers. Now I only use Tamiya paints in the airbrush. The work on Waterman Junction...the structures and scenery... is the very first time I have done anything like that. And thanks to you, and a few others, I have learned a lot and have the confidence to just try it and see what happens. ....wow, that was long winded.... Sorry... Cheers - Larry

That's coming along real nice. An excellent build. I was wondering about two things, are you going to illuminate it with leds, and I saw that you were going to cover up the seam from the two brick sections with a downspout. That's exactly what I would do, then I noticed when you put the roof section on there is a parapet wall that extends above the roof. I see that the brick seam extends up there. Do you have an idea of what to do with that or are you just going to leave it, which would be okay as well. Just wondering, because I scratch build a lot of things and I'm always watching. This old geezer has learned quite from your videos and I look forward to every video you make. Keep up the great work.

Yes. I will be using LED's for the lighting. The rear of the building façade does extend above the roof line. Not sure yet on that. Boomer happy accident indeed. I think you would have been hard pressed to achieve the look on the roof you got. FYI many years ago I purchased some automotive advertising for garage I was building for the layout. Because of the thickness of the paper, I sanded it down to approximately the thickness of a decal. I used diluted white glue to attach it to the garage wall. Because of the thinness of the paper, it being slightly wet it settled into the mortar lines of the building, creating the look of a painted sign. Just what I wanted. The sign was sealed with dull cote and it looks as good as the day it was put on. An option to consider for your sign on the back wall.
