This song is pure Warwick. When she was young and could hit the notes. Vandross though takes this song to a whole different dimension. Warwick and Vandross presented different styles on this song and both are beautiful. But this is a Dionne signature classic.

I think this was one of the prettiest songs Bacharach and David ever wrote. At the time, they pretty much were writing music with Dionne Warwick's voice in mind and her rendition of this song was absolutely perfect. No one else's version came close to hers. I was lucky enough to see her, when she was at the top of her game, and her voice, in person with just a single microphone, sounded as good as it did on her records.

I agree, but Dusty's live performance with Burt faking on the piano (and adding some horrible, out of tune singing of his own) is pretty wonderful in it's own way. Wish she had done a studio recording. I'm glad to have both versions, though it's Dionne's song.

@@hrhjrd Burt and Hal composed this song with Dionne Warwick's voice in their mind and she was the first to record this in 1964. Ella Fitzgerald did a version in 1969. Dusty only made a version of it in 1970, just a decade earlier than Luther's version.

This is my first time hearing her version. She absolutely rips your heart out with her passion! It's like she was really going through it when she sang this. I still like Luther's version a tiny bit better because of all he did with it, but, man! Dionne reached back and SANG this song!

Overall I'm down for Luther Vandross' version of this song but I just love Dionne Warwick's simplicity and clean interpretation of how she sings anything...it is just so refreshing. Many vocalist kill beautiful songs by doing way too much, and the songs lose their original essence.

Dionne version was a true jazz ballad. This is how jazz is sung powerful in the full not to much timbre. Luther showcased vocal talent in his tribute, he done almost everything a singer could do in a balled. Love em both #BlackExcellence

Another great one by the same writer, who wrote "Anyone who had a heart" was also sung by Warwick. The song writer said something about "all the musicians could not really accept the song, something about the unusual timing--whereas he says he played it for Warwick, who instantly accepted it-understood the timing and hit it first time. Real talent.

When this album was out I was a child of 4 and my mom passed away. I have been looking for years as to who sung this beautiful song. Although the memories are filled with pain and sorrow for me there is a soothing familiar reality to it. Her voice is wildly soothing to me ...

I had a very similar situation. My mother died when I was 10 and a few of the the popular songs at that time ("Walk Like a Man" and "Blue On Blue") are seared into my soul. When you are broken hearted, music finds such a deep place in you, and no one is more broken hearted than a child who has lost her mother.

There are several great versions of this and I wouldn't want to miss any of them. Always love to hear Luther again, and Sarah, Aretha, Anita Kerr, even Dusty sometimes. But Dionne has been my singer crush since early 60s, it hasn't changed, and this is one of the reasons.

A genius indeed. Rest in Peace: Burt Bacharach. Was in high school and college when he teamed up with Dionne Warwick who Burt discovered when she was a backup singer for the Drifters in 1962. Dionne was the perfect singer for many of his hits back then. Dionne nailed this song doing it better imho than any other singer to this day! After all these years I till gets chills watching Dionne sing A House Is Not Home.

Thank you for posting this. I just learned today that she made this before Luther. I never understood her reaction to him singing it. She appears to be so affected by his rendition at the 1988 NAACP Image Awards and I attributed it just to Luther's talent. I never knew Dionne Warwick was this graceful, elegant and amazing. My mom's favorite singer. Every time Dionne Warwick had a concert in Kingston Jamaica, I was there with my mom. This song I'll never forget. Dionne Warwick is a constant reminder of my mom, there is a striking resemblance.
