Not every search for a new bird for my Swedish list ends in success... This is a fact every birder knows. That's why I'm loath driving far distances for birds I already have on my global list, but this little american duck were reported from a place just outside Uppsala. Of course we had to try!
It didn't work out for us, the little puddle was full of vegetation, mainly Bulrush. Teals LOVE to forage in vegetation, thereby almost totally out of sight. It was also impossible to get an overview over large parts of the area, and the Teals that we glimpsed were all "our" Teals. Coots, Mallards and Northern Shovelers completed the scene.
Our only chance was when a Marsh Harrier took his lap over the tiny wetland. Then a swarm of small ducks flew up, circled and then went down again, back to obscurity. We didn't spot the Green-winged Teal during these movements. It had been seen rather well, in the only open area seen from a grassy knoll, earlier in the day. Frustrating, but that's life.
We had a nice time there, anyway, checking the common spring birds doing spring bird things. Three Common Cranes came flying in and landed on the far side of the puddle. Trumpeting a little, so I was hoping for a little dance, but that wasn't on the menu.
