You must have never met a 13 years old. I'm 21 (almost) currently, and when I was a 13 years old, although I was smart at that time, I was an incredibly honest douchebag. I've always thought I was mature enough but in fact, I've been always embarresed by my actions the next year. I never started truly growing up except after 16; that's when I begin rarely having "Oh I messed up last year" moments and these feelings completely vanished after 17. I begin travelling abroad at 19, learning more about life, countries, visa, passports, backs, politics, governments, and how everything works. Nothing impressed me much, but I didn't claim to know anything previously either, and I found myself having the capability to admit when I was wrong even to the worst of people, unlike when I was < 16.

And seeing this personality trait evolve throughout the show really made Dipper a more enjoyable character !

Dipper was always my favorite character just from how he took no shit. Sure, he was self conscious, anxious, and wanted to fit in. But when it mattered, he stood his ground. He was willing to tell it to you straight exactly what he thought of you, and even if it was hurtful, it was probably true. He was one of the most cynical cartoon protagonists, which is an amazing contrast from how most cartoon protagonists are. Most are simply happy, naive, and then when you get farther into the series, they show their secret sad side for one episode and then it's never spoken about again. Dipper was relatable though, he may have not been the cheerful, happy protagonist, but he genuinely was funny with all of his sarcastic comments! He is determined, gets to the roots of the problem, and tries his best in pretty much every situation. And he was flawed. He wasn't perfect, which cartoons admittedly get better about making imperfect characters throughout the series, but Dipper is a perfect example. While he likes to think things through, come at a problem from multiple different angles, he sometimes goes for the easiest solution without thinking of the consequences. He doesn't think twice about cheating to beat Robbie, and instead immediately uses the opportunity granted to him to defeat Robbie. He was willing to make a deal with a dream demon, something he knew almost nothing about except that it was extremely powerful and very likely dangerous, just to get into a computer. He has his flaws, but he overcomes them, makes the situation better in the end. And he sacrifices so much, especially for his sister. He had the opportunity to learn from one of the greatest minds of all time, someone he looked up to, and yet he turned it down because Mabel didn't want to be alone. I love Dipper's character so much :)

This is just my opinion, but I think that, while superficially Dipper is like Ford and Mabel is like Stan, there’s a level where it’s the other way around. Ford and Mabel are both kind of the “golden child”, Ford because of his brains and Mabel because of her ability to bond with people. They are also both quite trusting, with a tendency to see the best in people, but can also be a little selfish. Dipper and Stan, on the other hand, see themselves (rightly or wrongly) as the less favoured sibling. They are both a bit more grounded and realistic, but also more cynical, and lack the self-worth and self-confidence of their siblings.

Man I love this show. It really portrays the children well. Even one who considered himself more “mature” is prone to being tactless, judgmental, and at times outright mean. But that doesn’t mean he’s a total bully, nor does it make him any more of a fool than the average 12-year-old. Because kids can be smarter than we give them credit for, and more compassionate than we expect, and just because they don’t have a lot of stuff figured out yet doesn’t mean they aren’t fully fledged people worthy of respect. The two seasons this show aired for literally were when I was 12-13, the same transition to teenagedom the characters went through. And this show helped me so much in terms of figuring out what “growing up” actually meant when I was already considered “mature for my age.”
