They are arguably my favorite band of all time. Their career spans many styles and is very experimental, and goes from slick pop-metal, proggy death metal, acoustic, metalcore - so much. I'll hook you up with a primer.

Dir en Grey don't get enough credit for their ability to dip their toe into genres and yet not actually fall into the trap of sounding like copycat's

You are making me happy now, please continue! :) The journey will be long, if you are interested to see everything they can do. Why no one is suggesting anything from The Marrow Of A Bone album? I love it and i feel it stays somehow behind the rest.

They started in 1997 (though except from Toshiya, the bassist, they played together in an other band before). Each of their albums sound different, so you'll probably have much fun checking all of their stuff out :) I would always recommend listening to them live, but if you do, bear in mind that Kyo (the vocalist/lyricist) had throat problems between 2006 and 2013 and was hospitalized several times, especially during the concerts leading up to 2013 he literally had to fight for every tone which he did amazingly. If you have some time, please react to Macabre: kzitem.info/news/bejne/sGyG3YqIqZNpnG0 or Diabolos: kzitem.info/news/bejne/kqmulp-rsoejfXo Have a good day!

Crazy or insane seems like the right words for me when you think about how unpredictable and creative, able to find really great spacey and groovy experiences for the listener. After listening and enjoying Dir En Grey sometimes more straight-forward and more predictable writing seems less fun, so be a fan at your own peril :D Suggestion for a good dose of contrast: Dir En Grey - Saku

I don’t think that’s really the heaviest track on the album. But definitely one of them.

Some of their live version are actually better than their records, especially midwife live at budokan, the singer took it to another level..

These songs are great but they have way better songs. Also if you wanna really know the range of his vocals. Check out Dir en Grey-Different Sense

Go deep in there and check out the 2011 remake of Tsumi to Batsu. Then the 2012 remake of Kiri to Mayu. Or hell, check out Rinkaku to basically get their entire career condensed into one track. Just understand that the further back you go in their discography, the less you’re going to get what you’ve been hearing. They weren’t always this heavy, at least not in this sense.

If you're using Spotify, the three albums they have honestly are great. Withering is the one that turned me on to them and I still love it though I wouldn't call it their best. Uroboros in my opinion is likely their best work in terms of the styles and overall song writing. It was also kind of the beginning of a major shift for the band particularly Kyo's vocals.Dum Spiro Spero as an album I feel is a bit weaker, having a lot more derivative and mainstream qualities (only on certain tracks) but also contains some of their absolute best songs and passages of their entire catalogue. Still, getting a hold of Arche is something I'd totally recommend. The composition and cohesiveness kind of breaks down in a coupe areas but as a band it is the best display of their sound, the production/mixing is impeccable and potentially their most diverse work (making full use of Kyo's vocal arsenal and showcasing the majority of his and the rest of the band's varying styles) I would say to work your way back chronologically from there to really appreciate the evolution of this band. Then watch their live performances going forward chronologically as they get better and better with each passing year, with their '16-'17 tours being just about as flawless as anything I've heard or atended
