I'm just comparing this to my own MFSL CD version and I must say the vinyl sounds better even through KZitem. I'm impressed.
@mcnyregrus
5 жыл бұрын
The original recording from 1985 was a 16/44.1 digital recording. MFSL are well-known for making completely different masters for their vinyl and CD editions. I can't say if this was the case with this album, but I know for a fact they they do it routinely, and others have demonstrated this very clearly as well. Add to this that even if the vinyl and CD master in this case was the same master, the playback equipment would change the sound as well as no phono cartridge has a completely flat frequency response. Most phono cartridges deviate from flat with at least 2-3 dB or more. Many expensive cartridges deviate with much more than that - 6-10 dB, and they command these high prices exactly because they have a certain "sound", meaning a non-linear frequency response (although it should be said that some expensive cartridges are quite flat). Almost all CD players/DACs are linear within 0.1 dB. Although I haven't seen a measurement of the Ortofon Kontrapunkt, I've seen measurements of 10 other Ortofon cartridges, and they all have a spike/upwards bump in the frequency response around 10-12 kHz, and often a smaller dip in the harshness region. This creates a relaxed yet airy sound. Finally, this phono amplifier uses tubes. Although I haven't seen a measurement for this phono preamp, tubes often change the frequency response as well, although this is not always the case, and it might be less the case in a tube phono preamp than in an actual amplifier driving speakers.

@@mcnyregrus Exactly. If you like real "High Fidelity" - not "High End" Snake Oil or fairy tales about "analog sounds closer to the source" - buy a 200€ CD Player and just enjoy good music.
@feliscorax
3 жыл бұрын
@@christopherhafer3783 Ah, yes, here we go again: yet another fool who claims that 'High Fidelity' necessarily means it must automatically be better than the analogue sound. In my (highly subjective) opinion, a €200 CD player will not reproduce audio with the same drive precision or soundstage as a half-way decent record player (for example, I own a Rega Planar 6, which is a simply brilliant turntable for the money). By my reckoning, to achieve good CD audio playback quality, you're looking at *at least* €460 for a Marantz 6007 or a Cambridge Audio CXC, for example; if you want to match my Rega's drive precision, frequency and dynamic accuracy, channel separation, and soundstage, then you're easily looking at something like the Quad Artera Play+ or the Cambridge Audio Azur 851C - at a minimum, these retail for €1,499.00 and €1,699.00, respectively - and as much as €2,256.00 for the Cyrus CDi if you wish to better it. And, as with digital media in general, unless it's the original master in SACD format, the compression on a CD makes it no better than a well-mastered vinyl recording: in other words, one format is not inherently better than the other. Sure enough, a digital recording will typically have a more neutral sound and generally also comes pre-mastered with a higher dynamic range, but the reason some people prefer vinyl has little to do with the pursuit of "technical" perfection or "loudness" and more to do with what sounds musically pleasant and emotionally evocative - and music being an entirely subjective domain, who is anyone to say it should simply be reduced to that which is technically perfect when to do so risks the removal of that which makes it sound musical in the first place? Don't get me wrong: a well-mastered CD, on a decent player, can sound brilliant, but in my experience, this is the exception as most digital music sources just sound sterile, too clinical, and all-in-all, entirely lacking in that certain musical something. You listen to what you enjoy, but don't pretend as though your preferences are universally true.
@christopherhafer3783

@@feliscorax Get some basic information about Analogue AND Digital Audio before your continue to state all this "highly subjective" crap and calling others "fools". That's just rude. You are surely not even interested in objective, scientistic details about what you are talking about. You are in the big camp of "believers", fed by the sellers and manufacturers with all kinds of bullshit. No, CDs are not compressed (!!). No, your Rega-TT (or ANY!) is not better sounding than a cheap CD-Player. It has almost no sound at all. Add a cartridge and the rest of your chain. Speakers will make 60% of your listening experience, 38% of it is the room, so you have 2% to blame the rest of the system. If you are smart enough do some blind tests. Thank me later. And try to comprehend the big differences between "Player and actual record / Hard-Software", "Audio-Myths and Hard Science", "What you think with your /anyone's limited hearing abilities is right and what is really meant with "High Fidelity" and "close to the source". Last but not least: Try to understand that emotions are never part of any audio-system, it's in the music and will trigger your brain if your are in the right mood, even if it is played over a shitty phone-speaker.

@@christopherhafer3783 I’ve got enough information to form a valid and reasonable opinion on the subject, pal. As for being rude - that’s your problem. You are entitled to your opinions, just as much as I am, but as I said, I do consider it foolish if you think the whole approach favoured by those who prefer (note: it’s a preference, just as some prefer the sound of vinyl) CD and other digital sources is inherently superior as a musical experience. It isn’t, regardless of how much it might *technically* be claimed as such (and even that’s a dubious proposition: vinyl is just as capable of handling dynamic range and frequency response as CD). *Subjectively*, you’re full of feculent matter, because what you consider to be a good sound is most probably not the same as my idea of it (and for good reasons as mentioned both in my previous and my response below).

FFS people, yes - it IS a digital master - yes, it was recorded digitally - yes it was transfered to vinyl (1) - yes, it was played (2) and ripped (3) to digital again - yes, it is uploaded to youtube again digitally - and YES it sounds better than original digital. Why? Because PHYSICS! You cannot transfer digital to vinyl as digital in (1) - material itself cannot be fully "digitalized". Also in (2) you have something called inertion from needle/head who does not fully follow "digital" (analogized) grooves on vinyl - and by these two is how we are getting "analogized" signal from digital master. It is that analog signal ripped in (3) which is different than original - now it has that gramophone touch - vinyl/material "analogization" and needle/head inertion. And that my friends, is SOUL of vinyl listening. Is it better than digital? That's up to you and your ears if they like it :)

I bought the LP, and remember being disappointed to find out later that the CD had full(er)-length versions of 'Why Worry?' and, I think, the title track. Does this MFSL release have those versions, or the shorter ones (which were originally necessitated by the time restraints associated with 2 sides of vinyl)? Just wondering, as 4 sides at 45rpm might be enough for the longer versions (but I'm too lazy to work it out on paper!).

wowowow... that is not our everyday, affordable preamp! Can you share the brand / model? Lovely video, and indeed like someone else said here, the KZitem version even with all the limitations from compression sounds better than my MFSL CD, specially in the low end area. Kudos!

This MoFi is one of the all-time great recordings. Unfortunately its also one of the all-time worst pressings. Be thankful you got one not loaded with pops and crackles. Not that you wouldn't love it even then. Even my noisy copy can't ruin the otherwise stellar sound quality. Just unbelievably good.
