There is a road in Detroit Michigan called The Telegraph Road. The band were driving down the road Mark was reading a classic novel and it inspired this song. It charts the development of tbe US. How people travelled to the west coast of the US built settlements homes churches schools. How the telegraph spread news. It then goes to chart decline the depression of the 1930's and how small towns disappeared.

I've lived on a side street in Detroit, a couple of blocks off of Telegraph Road, for over 70 years, and it's always given me great pleasure to know that maestro Mark's tour bus passed by my street. :) I sometimes still think about the Knopler connection when a see one of the many area signs marked "Telegraph Road". Thank you, Steve W, for mentioning that factoid. :)

Mark and the band were on tour, they were in Detroit traveling along the Telegraph Road, a road that he described, that went on forever and at the time he was reading Knut Hamsun's ' Growth of the Soil' 1917, the book won the Nobel prize, it's about a man who settles in rural Norway and his aversion to modernity. Mark basically put the two together. So maybe it's worth reading the book too!

Your absolutely right when you say he’s reciting the lyrics. It’s similar but to be fair not on the same level as Sinatra he also spoke the words of songs. I was in the audience that night in 1983 at Alchemy Hammersmith Oden London aged 29 and now at 68 the memory is still with me today as to how lucky I was to be present to witness this performance of perfection. As a West London boy born in Chiswick West London it was a venue that I attended many concerts but this was a magical moment in your life that really don’t occur very often. These guys were as the say in the zone this night musicians and performers at their very best. A truly great band with probably one of the greats when it comes to guitar playing leading them. May I suggest you listen to Bruce Hornsby and The Range if you love the piano he is truly a master of the piano I first saw him and his band at Hammersmith Oden in 1988 also and became a life long fan and admirer of his musical accomplishments. I promise you he and his band won’t disappoint you. Start with That’s the way It Is Mandolin Rain The Show Goes on is my advice to you both. Indeed anything in fact from his first two albums That’s The Way It Is or Scenes from The Southside. Never worry about not being aware of some artists music is a journey god bless you both and be lucky in life

Here you see a concert by real musicians and not a dance show with 20 dancers on stage who hop around like jumping jacks. Dire Straits was my first big concert in Vienna in 1985 and the show blew me away. The talent of the musicians was just fantastic. I love watching you discover the heroes of my youth that I grew up with.... However, I can also recommend an artist of our time. Musically breathtaking, with a unique voice, very profound lyrics, and especially in his acoustic performances 110% absorbed in his music. Make sure you listen to Asaf Avidan. Whether "The Labyrinth Song" or "Your Anchor" from the album "In a Box II" or, if the piano is to play the main role, "Lost Horse" live au Perchoir PARIS. I think you will be thrilled and add this artist to your playlist.

Mark Knopfler is among the all-time guitar greats, but he’s also an incredible songwriter. In addition to his time with Dire Straits (6 studio albums), he’s built a considerable solo career - 9 albums (working on #10), 9 movie soundtracks (including The Princess Bride). Dig deeper and you’ll find collaborations with Steely Dan, duo albums with Chet Atkins and Emmylou Harris. He’s a busy boy, yet extremely down to earth. Watching him effortlessly doodle on a guitar in demos and interviews is breathtaking. He wrote “Private Dancer” and gave it to Tina Turner, who brought it to life on her same-title album that rejuvenated her career. Dire Straits (the band, without Mark) played the music to Tina’s vocals.

The birds can all fly away from the rain and the cold, we cant all do this.. His telegraph road became a settling a village, a town a city that got too big for itself, a marriage not going so well Its a fitting song for all time, no matter who, or where you are in life Best song ever written Thanks Mark

This song never cease to make me cry or tear up. Not from sadness but from pure joy. Its an absolute masterpiece. Its based on a road his tour bus was driving along whilst he was reading a book called (Growth of the Soil) and he put the idea of the old telegraph Rd and the basic story in the book and wrote it from there. Im led to believe he actually wrote the song whilst still travelling to the next concert venue. Ive bought the book to read myself as it is a real connection to the story of the telegraph Rd song. Also interesting bit of information is i live near s Telegraph road, not as big or long as this one in the song but i too watched it grow from a dirty old track to a modern thoroughfare ove 50 years and i often drive it and listen to the song at the same time. The book was written by Knut Hamsun if you're interested. This song is their best and has a lovely story to it, but it is in a different category to Brothers in Arms which is a beautiful song too but a different story. And ive followed and loved this song from the very first day it was played here in Australia on the radio. Ive always had a copy and listened to it every day for over 40 years. Try their song Industrial Disease, and Heavy Fuel, and The Bug. The first line of the second paragraph in the book it goes( The man comes , walking to the north. He bears a sack, the first sack)...... You can see how Mark Knopfler started the song talking about a man walking down a track with a sack on his back.

Mark Knopfler does something different than most other rock lead guitarists. While most of them play with a pick Mark Knopfler finger picks which allows him to hit the notes faster.
