Another real good 'different' one is ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST from the album Communique'. Of course, that story in the official music video of SKATEAWAY is another favorite (from the album Making Movies).

The release of this song and the timing was a shrewd move... The boys saw MTV arrive and immediately wrote a song for he US market, with an All American video to further eintice and boom the yanks bit the bait

I've now watched all of your Dire Straits reactions, and I enjoy how much you appreciate their musicianship, and Mark's songwriting and guitar genius. If you are interested in reacting to something you've not done yet, may I suggest "Lady Writer": it's shorter than most of their tracks, but it's fun and upbeat (kind of like 'Walk of Life') and as always, Mark's guitar is awesome.

@mrorange1982 In short, I agree completely. Your lengthly response makes me feel less subconscious about some of my own more verbose reflections on various occasions about Mark -- his gift for song writing, story telling and sophisticated composition, not to mention his resonant baritone voice that gives me goosebumps... and his clarity, phrasing, proficiency, perfection and virtuosity as a truly unique guitarist... in addition to the bands collective masterclass in musicianship... I always feel penetrated and transported by their performances!

Great reaction😊 I think the "song about the knife" refers to the earlier Dire Straits song "Six Blade Knife" (one of my favorite Dire Straits songs), since Mark has sometimes sung that line as "the song about the six blade knife." Some more DS suggestions: "Skateaway" (IMO audio-only would be best), "On Every Street" (the music video with the most views is unofficial but beautiful...it does justice to the song...the live version from 'On the Night' is great too), "Why Worry," "Water of Love," "Lions" (audio-only live at the BBC 19 July 1978), "The Bug"

Mark wrote a song specifically called Why Worry for the Everly Brothers as they were a group who inspired him growing up.The video also has Chet Atkins (as well as Knopfler) on guitar and Michael MacDonald on piano(I think). Walk Of Life used to be played to introduce players during sports events in the late 80s, early 90s

This song is about a busker in the subway tunnels. He opens his guitar case and plays and sings, and people throw money into the case. (Players of other instruments also busk, such as a violin player playing violin solos.) Has nothing at all to do with the sports clips. I think the sports clips detract from the song, which is unfortunate. Mid 80s I had a friend who actually busked in the Chicago subway tunnels. Another buddy and I played this song for him at a party and he loved it. We didn't have a keyboard so I played that melody on a recorder. Worked great.

I agree about the sports footage, especially as it's American sport. I read that the song is about a busker playing in the tunnels of the London Underground. Mark is a fan of British football (I call it proper football) especially his home team, Newcastle United. Before each match at their home ground, St. James Park, his tune Local Hero, the theme to the film of the same name is played.

There really are no bad Mark Knopfler songs. Whether it's Dire Straits, solo with his band, with the Notting Hillbillies, Chet Atkins, Emmylou Harris, movie soundtracks or other collaborations it all fits at some point in a full life.

Hi Shawn, Love your Mark Knopfler Dire Straits reactions. I watched a video long ago with Mark explaining that he himself did not personally like the ‘Official’ Dire Strait videos, with words to the effect that if you want to have a good musical experience, watch the (KZitem) Live Concert performances as they give you a lot more. As an adoring fan of DS & MK Solo, I absolutely agree . The one you are currently reacting to is a bit lack luster for my taste, so recommend you double down and also watch this one: ‘Dire Straits - Walk of Life LIVE (On the Night 1993) HD’. In fact this concert is full of brilliant performances, e.g. Calling Elvis, You and Your Friend, The Bug, Heavy Fuel, BIA, etc. Also recommend this seemingly rarely watched great performance of Mark/Dire Straits with Eric Clapton playing Mark’s song ‘I think I love you too much’ at Knebworth 1990. kzitem.info/news/bejne/s32FzZiGiIKSdW0si=iaKmcjUakQGIEh8J. All the very best, I❤MK

I'm glad to learn that Mark didn't like the official videos. I always wondered about that, especially in relation to Walk of Life. I'm surprised that he didn't have more say about the content, after all it's his song.
