Directions in Mandarin Chinese: Video #10 Transcript
Nǐ hǎo my good students. Thanks again for all of your comments. They mean a lot to me. This lesson is focused on being able to give and receive directions in Mandarin Chinese.
(Lucky Talk)
Look at my hands carefully. North is Běi, Běi, Běi-北. South is Nán, Nán ,Nán-南, West is Xī, Xī, Xī-西. and East is Dōng, Dōng, Dōng-东 Good, that was pretty easy. Now, let's add the intermediate directions. One thing to keep in mind is that these intermediate directions are revesed from the English ones. So, Northwest becomes Westnorth, xīběi-西北, Southwest become Westsouth, xīnán-西南, Northeast becomes Eastnorth, dōngběi-东北, Southeast becomes Eastsouth, dōngnán-东南.
This map looks rather empty, let's add a few directions. Běi-北, Nán-南, Dōng-东, Xī-西 (pause between each). Alright! That's better... now we can add the intermediate directions.
How can you express to the west, to the east, to the north , to the south in mandarin Chinese. Remember two points:
First, you need to add miàn-面 or biān-边 at the end of the directions. For example, Dōng Miàn-东面 or Dōng Biān-东边. Both are ok! Repeat after me, Miàn, Miàn, Biān, Biān.
Second, you need to put the preposition Zài-在 in front of the directions. For example, " to the north" it would be Zài BěiMiàn-在北面 or Zài BěiBiān-在北边 .
What direction is the compass pointing to? Yes, that's Běi. To the North is zài běimiàn-在北面. How about now? Xi. To the west is zài xīmiàn-在西面. Next one? Dong. Zài dōngmiàn-在东面. Next one? Nán. Zài nánmiàn-在南面 .How about now? Xī Běi. Next one? Xī Nán. Next one? Dōng Běi. And the last one,..... yes, it's pointing Dōng nán.
Now that you know compass headings in Mandarin, you are fine giving and receiving directions in the North of China, but if you are visiting the South of China, You will see people don't use compass headings but Left and Right to express directions. We need to learn those too!
Here is a picture of me that I took recently. This heart is on top of a mountain, in Mandarin, "on top " is expressed as Zài Shàngbiān --在上边How about under? Well, that's expressed as Zài Xiàbiān-在下边. On both sides of me is forest, to the left, zài zuǒbiān-在左边 and to the right, zài yòubiān-在右边. In front of me is the photographer, In front in Mandarin, that would be zài qiánbiān-在前边. the photographer can be also expressed as outside of the heart. Outside is zài wàibiān-在外边. Inside is zài lǐbiān-在里边. while behind me is the mountain. Behind is zài hòubiān-在后边.
Of course you can also use mian in stead of bian at the end of the directions. Let's do a quick review. zài shàngmiàn-在上面(on the top). zài xiàmiàn-在下面.(under), zài zuǒmiàn-在左面(on the left), zài yòumiàn-在右面(on the right), zài qiánmiàn-在前面(in front). zài hòumiàn-在后面(behind),zài lǐmiàn-在里面(inside),zài wàimiàn-在外面(outside).
In lesson 7, we learned how to express countries in Chinese now, we will put some vocabularies to the test with this little exercise! How do you say where is China in Mandarin? Where is zài nǎlǐ-在哪里.
Zhōngguó zài jiānádà de-中国在加拿大的________,(China is to the _______of Canada)
What location word shoul I have in the space? Yes, Xīmiàn-
Àodàlìyàzài rìběn de-澳大利亚在日本的_______(Australia is to the _________of Japan.)
What location word shoul I have in the space? Yes, Nánmiàn-南面!
Remember the pattern: Noun zai noun de direction word as Zhōngguó zài jiānádà de Xīmiàn-中国在加拿大的西面. And you will never get lost!
Due to living in different environments, in general, Chinese people in the South are considered more introverted and steady compared to the more passionate and extroverted North.
Good class, I hope you learned a lot! My videos are done as a series, one building up onto the other so be sure to grasp the knowledge from earlier videos to make future ones easier to understand. Your homework is to tell me in Mandarin Chinese, where your country is relative to mine, China! in the comments
As always, don't forget to subscribe and provide me with your feedback! Zàijiàn-再见!
