When ‘Joker’ sprung into cinemas in 2019, it broke comic book-movie convention: an understated origin story about how Arthur Fleck (played by Joaquin Phoenix) became Joker, a murderous clown with a split personality. The movie, directed by Todd Phillips, was nominated for a slew of Oscars, and Phoenix won for Best Actor.
In ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ - the title refers to a state of shared psychosis (it’s French!) - Fleck is having a jolly old time in Arkham Asylum, hanging out with Lee Quinzel (Lady Gaga) with whom he’s caught in a bad romance.
Above, Phillips talks us through three key scenes from the sequel for the latest episode of Esquire’s Freeze Frame.
