I think in a maple fretboard with no finish or oil finish like the charvel, the fretboard looks cooler worn in but not dirty. Remove the grime but don't clean with steel wool or sandpaper, and you will have that cool effect of "worn in"

ultimately, whats on the fretboard should have little or nothing to do with the "cleanliness" of the tone. if you're hearing something, the frets obviously got a slight cleaning in the process. and there is logic that the goo on the board could have either tactile or emotional result.
@dan19630

Actually I can hear slight, but noticeable differences between the before and after. Definitely with the soloing. The after has more clarity, and slightly brighter tone with some added sustain to the notes. Without the build up on the fret board the notes bend easier. Because my fingers are not dragging across the frets.

A dirty maple fretboard is what defines a vintage fender. I understand it is not vintage nor a fender, but come on man, rosewood is the wood that will mess up from sinking into it's pores. Maple is tight and gives it class.

That is by far the dirtiest fingerboard I've ever seen! I don't know if I should be impressed by the amount of playing it must've taken to get it there or mortified by the neglect! I suppose it probably looks worse than it is on a maple fingerbord though, sounded much better cleaned up, but it also sounded surprisingly good dirty!

From my experience, the dirtier the fretboard, the sooner the bass strings sound dead. I think because my fingers rub on the gunk and spread it along the strings when I'm playing.
@guitarist6494
7 жыл бұрын
Imo its all the strings. The only real difference I notice is sustain. Newer strings sound slightly brighter, the older they get they lose brightness but gain some warmth, and lose sustain. You really notice with you hold a singular note or hold a bend, it dies out a lot quicker that newer strings.
