The best part about Sam Riegel not remembering when 9/11 happened is that he was there, in a nearby apartment building, and recorded video footage that has since been used in multiple documentaries.

trauma has been proven to alter ones perception of time, especially the time surrounding the traumatic event. To me, it sounds like, even after all this time, the memory is still so fresh in his mind that it's as strong as memories from only a few years ago, so he has trouble placing it.

@@theductductgoose Yup. The book The Body Keeps The Score by Bessel van der Kolk basically is this in book form. Traumatic memories, when remembered, depress the amygdala, which is the part of the brain that puts things in the proper time context. Most of the modern (and more effective) trauma treatments are about allowing the mind to put the traumatic memories into the proper historical context so that, instead of being remembered like they are happening, they are just bad old memories. A lot of the treatments seem to be about distancing the person from the memory while recalling it. It's a really good book. Put me on a path of dealing with my, fairly mild compared to some, trauma. One interesting thing about why memories become trauma is that traumatic memories often contain an inability to act while they happen. ie being trapped in a car after a car crash compared to being able to get out of the car. Which is why abusive people make so much trauma in the people around them. Because normally the abused can't leave the house/ situation. Anyway, I feel sorry for Sam and, while I'm sure OP meant no harm, not the best thing to laugh about.

@@Badartist888 All of this is good, but I would point out that Sam himself played it off as a joke (which he has a tendency to do) and based on stuff I've seen from him I doubt he'd want people to feel bad for laughing at a joke he made, even if it is about something serious.

"oh shit... i think this makes me Chevy Chase's boy toy" literally what could possibly be the context for this

Chevy had been given a room in a hotel and Sam was operating as his assistant for the event. Chevy didn’t want the room and went home instead. Sam then invited a friend over to enjoy the luxury they were offering to Chevy. They ordered room service, but realized the staff thought Chevy was there, so the solution was for his friend to run into the bathroom and start up the shower and for Sam to answer the door and say Chevy was in the shower but he’d accept the room service for him.
