I loved the moment where you interrupt two guys playing a ball game in a crater, misinterpret the rules and, by SUCCEEDING at the very difficult skill check, launch a magnificent throw with beautiful form clean into the harbor because you thought it was a shotput contest. And then that prompts a side quest where you have to go find them a new ball to replace the one you flung into the sea. THAT is great writing. Even when you succeed beautifully, you’re still a complete f***up. Tone preserved, hilarious moment. Love it

I'm really glad to see someone else talking about how emotional and moving that scene was. I was just stunned and misty-eyed, and I had no idea how to put to words why. Getting to have that moment feels like somebody going out of their way to do something nice for you just because. Like if you just wait it out, and push through occasionally being the butt of the joke or being let down, there's plenty of majesty in the world waiting to be discovered. It's a profound moment of earnestness, surprise, and joy in a game that can be crushingly bleak. What an outstanding moment, and to tie it - this seemingly nothing flight of fancy side quest - into the ending on top of all of that. Disco Elysium does payoff better than any video game I can think of. Thanks for reminding me of how special that scene is.

[Somewhat Spoilers] I think the part of the game that really broke me was internalizing the "Wasteland of Reality" thought. Harry is a piece of trash and I wanted to approach the game as a growth experience for him. Get clean, solve the crime. But then getting sober actually reduces more stats than it raises and everyone in the game just keeps treating you like you're a burnout. If you bring up your sobriety, everyone either dismisses you or gently humors you. Just like they would in real life, because you've "been sober" for all of 36 hours but you've been a drunk for years. You've got to do it for you, because you want to be sober, because "this is how normal people are all the time."
@juanjuri6127
3 жыл бұрын
While this is mostly true, "Wasteland of Reality" is actually pretty good stats-wise. People tend to miss that the fact it gives you +1 PSY means it gives you +1 to all six of your PSY skills, so it cancels out the additional -1 you get to Suggestion and Inland Empire. Its net impact is -1 to Physical Instrument and +1 to four skills, plus the permanent loss of bonuses from alcohol (which is trivial if you've played it sober up to that point).
@FlauFly

I had Intellectual default playset and so I had 1 in PSY stat, which was very hard overall, but "Wasteland of Reality" raised overall PSY skills and their cap level, which was almost live-saving.

I definitely get some of the things 5e's design decisions were going for, so I try not to give the game too much flak, despite definitely it not being a game for me, but I really dislike the way that the renaissance of TTRPGs in modern culture has largely only coalesced around 5e, rather than what I was hoping to see of people getting into TTRPGs with 5e, then branching out once they saw what more was out there, if only from a selfish "I want to actually play one of the systems I never get to play, but people immediately lose interest when it's not 5e" stance. Also, the part about being a GM to push communist propaganda on your friends, you don't even need to be the GM for that. In my second ever campaign I started essentially a communist revolution in a major city, and there was a whole lot of communist propaganda I was putting out in those sessions.

Okay, we need a new video now that Final Cut is out. I’m playing it with my wife right now (for the first time) and having just such an amazing time. Making our Harry into someone we can both respect and, even love has been one of my proudest gaming achievements. And Kim respects us! Like, a lot! We’ve danced together! Talked about how cool his car is! Played settlers of catan together (Kim won because I spent all my time building infrastructure and healthcare and public education for my worker tokens)! I come from a cop family and consequently, cannot fucking stand cops in basically any media, but we both fucking love these two cops. If that’s not a testament to the strength of this game’s writing and humanistic message I don’t know what is. I’ve been watching a lot of clips of other people’s Harrys just to see what it’s like. And one of my favorites goes like this- Harry reads and internalizes some bit of fascist mythologia about an Icebreaking ship. Kim is wise to it and Harry keeps calling himself “the icebreaker.” Kim exasperatedly but gently tells him, “No Harry, you’re not The Icebreaker, you’re a cop investigating a murder, now please stop.” But Harry keeps going, so Kim snaps. “What the fuck do you think you are doing!?” Kim shouts, “nevermind, don’t answer that, and don’t bring it up again.” And Harry’s thoughts pop up to tell him that he feels properly chastened, and after what Kim said, the whole idea feels kind of lame and stupid anyhow. It’s just so perfect. Fascists can’t act out in the open like that because if they have anyone they respect, anyone they’re emotionally accountable to outside that fascist framework, it just doesn’t work. Kim won’t let you be that person. If Harry is a fascist at all, he works quietly, he denies he’s a Nazi, just like real fascists, just like fucking Gary.

The "what's an RPG" issue pops up when we forget Adventure games. These include text-based (Zork, Hitchhiker's Guide), point and click (Circle of Blood, Maniac Mansion, Leisure Suit Larry, Blade Runner), first-person (Myst, 7th Guest, every walking simulator which is really just a First-Person adventure game), and Action/Adventures (Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania). Disco Elysium is an RPG whose interface is an Adventure Game. The same way Borderlands is an RPG whose interface is a First Person Shooter. And Nier Automata is an RPG that's also an Adventure Game and a Bullet Hell and an Action game. These debates are too essentialist, personally, as I see Disco Elysium not as a platonic ideal of any one genre but as the natural progression of multiple genres working together to fulfill the needs of the game. I believe it owes as much to Planescape Torment as it does to Full Throttle.
@maximeteppe7627
3 жыл бұрын
I feel like there is something to the Idea that Disco Elysium is "the platonic Ideal of an RPG" (not that I subscribe to strict classifications or platonic ideals in general) in the sense that it feels like it genuinely descends from tabletop roleplaying rather than solely from video game RPGs. like there is a tendency to boil down RPOG mechanics to stats and skill points, and I think a game that allows dialogue to meaningfully shape your character is closer to what the term RPG means to people across formats (both digital and tabletop).

I just finished my first playthrough, and I totally missed that part about Evrart, because if you talk to the Deserter about René first, and tell him that he died of a heart attack recently, he gets sad and doesn't really want to talk about anyone else anymore. I loved that insight into his character, because he keeps talking about how he always planned to kill René himself, but you can see that he's genuinely devastated that he's dead. As much as he considered René his enemy, he was also one of the last connections he had to a past that he refused to move on from. I also loved the inframaterialist sidequest with the communist students. Their theories were absolutely laughable and boiled down to 'if you think about communism, that's enough to change the world actually', but then you can still help them to build their insane theory matchbox building and it's a whole moment. Because even if they still think that it's because of their batshit theories, what it really shows is that impossible things can be achieved through cooperation. Also, if you tell them to ask for Cindy's help to put up posters or whatever, she does it by defacing the statue of the king in the square, it's great.

I love Disco Elysium so much. Just. So much. The game made me feel bad for pestering Kim until he finally told me about [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS] but listen. Listen. I'm [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS] and I needed to k n o w I was not the o n l y o n e. Though of course I realized in hindsight that making HARRY the one who pestered him was. Well. Kind of like asking someone on a date if they've ever struggled with their mental health, all while wearing a "Don't stick your d*ck in crazy" t-shirt.

Somewhere in the middle of my first run, I realized that Harry was just kind of this malleable man child in the beginning of the game. And a really big aspect of the game that I enjoyed was the fact that you can dig deep through Harry’s subconsciousness and alcoholism, to make him the person that he could’ve been before he spiraled. it’s like all the good things about him were already there but they were just buried underneath this layer of severe and untreated mental illness. Like you can give him that opportunity for redemption man😭😭😭😭

Excellent essay. I find playing Disco Elysium oddly soothing. Whenever the rapidly deteriorating hellscape that is our world gets me down, I'll come back to it and something about it always makes me feel a little bit better. Something I don't think you mentioned about fascism in Disco Elysium that I really loved: if you internalize Revacholian Nationhood, the thought associated with fascism, it gives you enhanced benefits for drinking alcohol but does morale damage every time you select a fascist dialogue option going forward. A fascist Harry alienates Kim, of course, but he's also inflicting ongoing psychic wounds to himself the more he indulges his bigotry. And having internalized the thought, he's given a stronger incentive to keep destroying himself with alcohol, which means a fascist Harry is more likely than most to be dead from alcohol abuse not long after the credits roll. Internalizing fascism is depicted not only as destructive to the world around you, but as inherently an ideology of self-destruction.

Apologies for the double-comment, but that bit towards the end where you played the clip of Harry's id whispering "you don't have to do anything anymore" made me break down and cry. Cut to the core, that bit.

I avoided playing this video for a while cause I just never got a hold of Disco. Then I played it. Yeah Cyberpunk not only has all of those problems you discussed in your later video but holy shit does it not even hold a silent pale candle up to this master work. God we need more of this!

Highly recommend tracking down Fallout 1 and 2. Nothing has the complexity of Disco, but they're MUCH more like Disco than the later games. Dramatically different character builds make a real difference, you bypass shootouts to win, all that.

Oh my god you asked Lilienne out on a date with Kim right fucking there. The net picker. Whose husband died at sea. The option you get after she tells you her husband died drunk at sea and Harry’s first thought is “bet she’s ready to meet an EVEN BETTER DRUNK, I should ask her out” I never chose that option because I already felt guilty for wasting Kim’s time with my bullshit but I can’t believe she says yes AND KIM HAS TO COME ON THE DATE WITH YOU KIM I’M SO SORRY

The dazzling thing about Harry is that you'd _think_ it would take him a week to ignore his job, terrorize the hotel staff, destroy the equipment of a badly-funded citizen police force and ruin the infrastructure of an impoverished town, but he got all that shit done in weekend. I swear to God, it's either three full days or two days and an evening. I've played the game a ton and I think I've traced his whole path (like he 100% found the guy on the boardwalk while on the Tequila Sunrise spree.). He was a busy dude.

I love this game so much. This video is amazing and gave me so much to think about. What you said about putting the work in being scary really resonated with me. A great part in this game (there are so many great parts) is when you try to sing in the bar, but I failed that skill check HARD and Harry just belted the most awful singing ever, it so fucking hilarious. And afterward you can ask people in the bar about it and they’re like “wtf” I can’t wait to play this game again when the final edition released with full voice acting, it is going to be amazing!!

(endgame spoilers) -- One of my favorite interactions in the game is between Harry and "Dolores Dei". At first I was a little wary when we were just pointed towards the island. I was worried the solution would just be sitting there, we'd arrest the real killer, be it a twist character or whatever, and the game would just fizzle there. but the dream sequence made it feel like everything I'd done mattered
