COPD imposes a huge public health burden, with a sizable proportion of COPD patients having severe emphysema. Short of lung transplantation, there are few good options for treating severe emphysema. Recently, the FDA approved bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR) as a unique therapeutic approach for severe emphysema associated with hyperinflation. We now offer this innovative therapy at the BWH Lung Center. It is important to note that this therapy only works in carefully selected patients who must meet many criteria, including absence of "collateral ventilation" between the target lobe and its adjacent lobe. In this interactive demo, we will take participants through the entire process of screening patients using a clinical assessment tool followed by a sophisticated software analysis of radiographic images, physiologic assessment of collateral ventilation using an endobronchial balloon catheter with a flow-sensing tip, and finally deployment of carefully sized endobronchial valves to achieve BLVR.
