Peyre, voted one of the most beautiful villages in France in the Occitanie region.
Today's tour is different.... We will visit Peyre, a village built at the foot of a gigantic rock where the ancient and the modern mix.
Peyre has been part of the list of the Most Beautiful Villages in France since September 2003. Its history is summarized in a 12-page pamphlet published in 1877.
Its troglodyte houses intrigue tourists. They got this name because they were built at the foot of a rock, in addition to keeping the temperature refreshing in the summer, the houses are invaded by natural light, making everything even more beautiful. And its narrow, flowery cobblestone streets offer a refreshing summer retreat, as well as a beautiful promenade rich in history.
The troglodyte church of São Cristóvão is the main attraction of the village. Built around a cave in the cliff, the church dates back to the 11th century and was fortified in the 17th century. Classified as a French Historic Monument since 1936
From July to September the old church opens its doors to exhibitions by local artists and artisans. The new church was built around 1860, and is decorated with carvings and stained glass, the most notable being the rose window on the façade that represents Saint Kitts.
We found an old, communal oven, which is accessed every year for the local party.
A moment common to all French communes, Peyre also honors their dead during the First World War.
Peyre also gives you a beautiful view of the largest viaduct in the world. It is a privilege to be able to appreciate in the same place two such opposite beauties, on the one hand a beauty where the past reigns, while on the other it is possible to see modernity and technology establishing itself.
The Greek historian Herodotus said
“Thinking about the past to understand the present and idealizing the future."
