In this captivating KZitem video, we delve into the world of Surma, an innovative and dynamic Portuguese artist who has been making waves in the music industry. Recognized by NPR's Bob Boilen as one of the best discoveries from SxSW 2018, Surma's music is a fusion of jazz, electronics, and a multitude of other influences that explore paths that are not always obvious but with a strong identity.
➡️ Born Débora Umbelino, Surma grew up in a small town near Leiria, Portugal, where she developed her musical skills from a young age. Her talent was soon recognized when she won a band contest called ZUS! with her first band "Backwater and the Screaming Fantasy."
Since then, Surma has taken the music industry by storm with her solo project, touring all over the world and getting attention from the national media. Despite the pandemic putting a stop to her plans, she continued to compose for theater and cinema, recorded an album with a band formed by cerebral palsy users (5a Punkada), and prepared new material for her comeback record.
➡️ In this video, we explore how Lisbon, a vibrant city and environment, has helped shape Surma's music and how other artists, like Selma Uamusse and Mike Stellar, thrive in this creative hub. We also delve into Surma's eclectic and unique sound, her debut album "Antwerpen," and her recent performances across the globe, including in Europe, the US, and South Korea.
Join us on this musical journey as we discover the artistry of Surma, a rising star in the music industry.
