I've been a portrait and cartoon artist for decades and I think AI can be a useful tool. It's certainly fun to play around with, but it's nice to be able to get art references that aren't from a specific image. For example I was creating an alien planet and I needed '3 storied pink adobe igloos'. I was NEVER EVER going to find a photo reference for that and when it comes to backgrounds and perspective I need references. I can't draw environments straight from my mind. I did several renders and used them all to look at while I drew my own picture.

Thank you for that example. I have a friend that drew this little alien guy while she was sitting at work and she sent him to me and said like my friend. I asked what she would do with him, she said nothing. I asked if I could have him to use and she said sure. I want to tweak him a bit and maybe make a family like him and create a series. I want to get into labels and I thought maybe a series of labels of the family. I named him Kirby. I just got to figure out an environment to put him in that will appear to children and adults alike. Any suggestions would be awesome (hint hint, lol)

So long as AI is used in an ethical fashion, it can be anyone's best professional friend. There's no need for the "Chicken Little" type of thinking. The sky isn't falling, folks. Great explanation, Norrine. I too find it interesting yet scary. I'm a programmer who works on business applications and I'm not a fan of all the drag and drop and computer generated programming. Mostly because I'm seeing new programmers who really don't understand what is happening underneath the hood ... they just know the boxes to click and often end up clicking the wrong ones and not thinking the entire process through. The generation before me probably thought the same thing about me! I'm trying to keep an open mind and see how I can use it to benefit me because I certainly can't change it. I love how you seem to have the same attitude of looking for the positive and how you break things down in an easy to understand way. 💕

When talking about copyright it is a very confusing issue as a lot depends on the country you are in. For example the book Winnie the Pooh is now copyright free in the U.S. but here in Canada only the TEXT is copyright free meaning that in the U.S you can print out the book with the pictures and as I do make earrings and mini books from it sell them but as I am in Canada I can only do the text and not include any of the pictures as you have to wait a certain length of time after the creator dies before it is copyright free. If you design an image such as your baby cows in the field and change even 1 thing such as the colour of the flowers, or the placement of the cows or the size of the picture, it is now your work and therefore are entitled to sell it as your work, at least here in Canada. Bottom line is always check what your country's copyright laws are or ask a librarian to check for you.

Thanks for asking for our opinions while trying to navigate this new Ai program and its use and meanings. As an artist myself I really dislike Ai because it uses images that are created by real artists, that had to put in loads of their time and energy to create & enhance their skills & find their own style (this goes for photographers as well as painters, illustrators, even for singers and actors) so there are loads of people having invested so much to first develop their skills, their style who then took loads of time to make a certain artwork.. and there comes a computerprogram that steals all ofcyhat by using others artworks or photographs or even peoples (think celebreties) personal features which (if I'm not mistaken)are all copyrighted themselves (except the celebrities maybe although you can't just use those at random which is very fair & logical I think) but the art/photographs used by Ai is owned by their maker and Ai just steals that without any acknowledgement or pay, and sometimes the images generated have even used one source so much the artists' style and even their autograph shows up on it. So I absolutely hate the use of Ai for 'artwork' as it is harmfull to the artists it uses (cause its faster & cheaper or even free) & it has the potential to ruin any future possibilities for artist cause they might not survive this. It is basicly stealing art and reusing it with real life implications for real artists/designers. Like your examples are compiled of works of artist who spend hours on it, but have no say in it being used and get NO return *not even recognition* let alone pay for their work. So even this 'innocent' use of Ai for artwork and images/songs etc is inherently a very bad idea with massive negative impact on all creative occupations. Its why both singers and the whole artworld are very much against it & are trying to get it banned. And I'm not even talking about the other negative impacts it already has, or could potentially have in the future. Only in this 'creative' use regard it is already having a huge negative, quite infuriating tbh, impact on the people it steals from and I wish more people would realise this. So for me its a big NO - Please don't use it. I would even be NOT happy if someone gifted me something they made using Ai images. I really wouldn't want it. On top of that, Ai 'art' either feels soul-less, or if it does have a soul, that is the soul the original artists put into their works with loads of effort, before it got stolen to be mashed up & spit out. So to me it is very disrespectfull, dishonest and very harmfull to our creative industries & artists. Yeah that's about it for me 😅

As a photographer and artist, I have a love-hate relationship with AI. I love how much I can do with it. At the same time, it scares me to death that it will take over our world someday. There are so many ways that it is advancing and at such a rapid pace, it really is mind-blowing and scary. I do, however, think that incorporating AI into the fields of cybersecurity, medicine, and technology is a win-win situation. However, I fear that it will start hindering the development of young minds who use it to cheat in school. I guess we'll know in a few generations if AI has left our youth of today and tomorrow inept. @@TheCraftyOrganizer AI swipes from the uploaded data, ( because, hey, it's on the Internet, therefor it's all Free) including IPs without permission, or being licensed. I have a fx/film friend who, tested with a prompt suggesting Frazetta and Giger "style". The image was a mashup from both, snatching parts of well known pieces by both. It was quite obvious. Pics you find, like a yellow bus in a different color, is still some one's original photograph, or some one's original graphic. Used to be, theft included a Human, snatching said photo and changing the color in photoshop or some other program. Now, AI does it in seconds. What is truly sad, is just how many people do not notice things, like, six fingers on a person. Five legged "life sized wood carved elephants". Even sadder, Companies that produce products to support Artist, (Wacom), spit out an add campaign with AI generated graphics, to sell their product that was never involved. Then claim they "didn't know". Really? oh please, we all know you were cutting costs, and jobs.

AI is art theft, plain and simple. Can't find a free image? Make one. You can't make one? Buy one. Can't afford it? I guess you're not getting one. No one is entitled to fire up the plagiarism machine to steal what others have spent years cultivating and crafting. The amount of youtubers that promote AI not even for personal use, but to sell, is disheartening. Why bother making my own one of a kind unique art to sell if someone can spend 5 minutes downloading hundreds of images. And if I do make my own unique art and put it online it's at risk for being stolen by said AI and used to make art like it for free for others who have done zero work. And this isn't even touching on the ways that AI have been used for child exploitation and propaganda. Every time someone uses a program they're training it how to be better at deceiving us, and it's humans that are wielding that power not a benevolent force for the good of creativity. Everything comes at a price, and you have to ask yourself what's the worst that could happen? Kids committing suicide after someone makes fake nudes is a terrible price to pay for some images of flowers and cartoon pandas.

With regards to the deep fakes - it's why I didn't touch on it. That type of use of this technology is obviously horrible, but a VERY different purpose then what I am discussing in my video, which is an AIDE for crafters. And I am not sure I understand how it would be theft - and I'm not being argumentative, genuinly curious. The images generated are based on the computers understanding and perception of data from uploaded information. Which is why the copyright laws are so cloudy - as it's not actually created by a human at this point. But I want to learn more - so can you please help me understand how it is theft?

@danacleveland1998 My husband swears we have a craft house. We have 4 bedrooms, 2 of the 4 are small. So I got the one big one that is my craft room and one of the small ones and that is my art room. Then I have supply storage on one full and one partial wall of my garage with shelving floor to ceiling of supplies and extra things. But in my dining area we I have a decent size cart that houses my resin making. I bought a nice BBQ cover for it so it wasn't an eye sore. I wish I could do like Norrine and have a garage. We have a 3 car garage but we live in the Las Vegas, NV and it gets super duper hot here in the summer. I can't store glue tubes for my glue gun out there, they literately melt. Winters aren't usually to bad, I usually can survive out there in a nice sweater but this winter is not so nice. I wish I could put AC in my garage but those somewhat portable units are very expensive cause all 3 garages are connected, there are no divider walls. I need a SHE HOUSE! lol

My first house here, we built 30 yrs ago had a nice size lot .but not like that anymore and the prices of houses here are above insane. With the thousands of CA people flocking here.... the whole town has gone to the dogs. We have things we never had before, that no one wants. I would love to move but there really is no where to go with great weather like here. I moved here from NY/NJ 31 yrs ago to get away from cloudy skies, smog and cold bone piercing weather. With all the people living here now... we have smog now. Our roads were not built for this kind of traffic and they say it will take 8-12 yrs to get them wider. May have to go double deck on the roads cause alot of places have no more room to go sideways. So.... lets dream..... where would we imagine a She Shed House? lol ........... My opinion stems from being a graphic artist married to a paralegal. We’re both expecting it to be a hot mess for many different reasons. It’s going to put people out of jobs. It’s going to become a copyright issue. As soon as people start suing because their personal watercolor showed up in something someone AI generated and mass produced… it’s a matter of time. In trials, where will we be when even visual evidence is questionable? Others have said they’re fine with it as long as it’s used ethically. Hahahaha. :) Just like Napster was so ethical with MP3s were the hottest new technology. All I can say is that I’m glad I’m on the cusp of retirement before this hits the fan.

Oh - I agree!!!! I love it as a tool, from a crafting aspect - but there must be some form of protection for creators! One of the larger AI generating companies is DallE (after famous artist Salvador Dalí) Because their first successful AI generated image was in the style of Salvador Dalí!!!! So, the result was obviously taken - yet, because it was not created by the original artist - merly 'in the style of'... it's ok?!? I keep my images simple for now. 'Cute cow'! 'Sunflower watercolor'.... but I know others are using it in ways that are clearly not ethical and making a profit. So much grey area here that needs to be defined.

Oh what a slippery slope. One that existed long before we even knew what A-I was. Once upon a time, I took an amazing photo of an animal housed at a local attraction. Open free to the public. I am not a professional photographer and I was proud of this photo and I shared it on an early version of social media. Years later I get a notification through the social media informing me that my image was going to be used in an advertisement for a National company. Actually it stated specifically by who. It explained that the social media was public domain and searches found the picture was taken in a public place making the picture I was so proud of free to anyone who wanted to use it. Certainly not what my intention was for it. Certainly not how a professional photographer would have handled it. Very legal. The world is full of images placed online. Some are generated by the poster. Some are copies of a copy of a copy of something copied from a copyrighted book. It’s a public image unless the author of the book sees it, hires an attorney to provide its copyrighted. But, can that author prove that image was 100% created by them using an image not found in a public space? Very few would be able to. Some of the images might have come from a source over a hundred years ago. Is that source still around to search every where making certain their image remains their property? Going a step further, if I love howling wolves, I can create my own silhouette or easily find one. I can add whatever images to it that I want. If I use an image from a public place I am free to do that. If someone is famous for painting pictures on that howling wolf silhouette they own the rights to that exact image. If they filled out the proper paperwork and filed it with the appropriate fee. That doesn’t stop me from painting my own image on a howling wolf silhouette. I could even submit fees and paperwork and claim it as my own. This series of if this, then that scenarios could go on infinitely. Now add in A-I. It’s a computer program with the capability of finding every image ever posted to the internet and it also has the ability to change that image any way that the user of that program desires. You gave a wonderful example of how different programs come up with different requests. People will adapt to using the correct wording to get exactly what they want and that program if programmed correctly can adapt itself to fine tune understanding what you the user is asking for. There are always going to be legally protected images and ways to legally use them. Mona Lisa, with her smile. Not a protected Mona Lisa with green hair and a nose ring. The moral compass on right and wrong was lost long before computers. Computers just make it easier. In today’s modern society few people will have the integrity to honor Mona Lisa and leave her as she is. After all Mona Lisa belongs to the world doesn’t she? The starry night swirls certainly do. Very slippery slope. I’m not an attorney. This is my opinion only. It’s now posted on a public platform. Someone can take it, condense it and it’s theirs because they changed the wording. If you create an image or a song or a whatever using A-I is it yours to legally do with it what you want? In my opinion it is. I’m one of the zillions in the world adapting. More words added to this extremely long comment: people please think carefully before you post that triumphant home run picture you took of your first grader. Consider what any of your precious photos could become before and whether you are comfortable with that before you hit add.

Very well said! And, thank you so much for saying it so respectfully! I see where the openly known images (like the Mona Lisa) could be re-used. Which is sad for the rest of us, who just want to create beautiful things for our own use. Thank you so much for your comment!

One thing that AI-generated art makes me think of is when synthesizers first hit the music world. I think it was around the 1960s maybe...? I'm not sure if they were banned worldwide, but there were at least some places/countries that banned the use of them for performances or recording, because the fear was that human musicians would be replaced by technology. Well, I kind of wonder what someone like Taylor Swift would think of that. I'm not sure if musicians use those types of synthesizers now, but you know music is performed and recorded using technology. Also, when cameras first came out, at least some visual artists like painters screamed that photography would replace them. I don't know if anyone asked that a camera ban be enacted anywhere, but I'm pretty sure painters & photographers are both still around & producing art in their respective fields. And how many visual artists now use photography - & have for years - to create either their primary or supplementary reference material for guiding/informing their paintings, sculptures, etc.? Though even that can be considered controversial among some artists today. Yes, there are MANY negative applications for AI, but there are also many positives. The technology itself is agnostic - neither good nor bad; it's how people use it that determines that. Like nuclear energy can be used to create devastating destruction with atomic bombs, but is also used in medical applications that can save people's lives. It all lies in HOW people use it. I do believe the law does need to catch up with the technology, though, to provide guidance for its use & consequences for misuse. Anyway, thank you for going down the rabbit hole for us, Norrine. I hope y'all are doing well. How is your dad these days? I haven't see any updates in a while. I recall one of your daughters was having medical issues sometime last year, too. Is she doing OK now? Just wondering. Take care, & have an awesome day! :)
