👋🏼 Hello! Today, Jiji goes to Setagaya (世田谷区), Tokyo, Japan!
We went to go see Gotokuji Temple and the thousands of Maneki Neko figurines. The temple is opened from 6 AM to 5 PM. We arrived close to the temple's closing time, so we didn't get to explore the entire temple, but we did get to see the Maneki Neko statues 😻 We also rode the cat train at the end 🚊🐱

📍 GOTOKUJI TEMPLE, located in Setagaya, Tokyo, is famously known as the birthplace of the Maneki-neko, or beckoning cat. The temple's history dates back to the 15th century, but it gained popularity due to a legend involving Ii Naotaka, a feudal lord. According to the story, during a storm, Ii Naotaka sought shelter under a tree near the temple. He noticed a cat beckoning him into the temple, and just as he followed, lightning struck the tree he had been standing under. Grateful for the cat's lifesaving gesture, he became a patron of the temple, leading to its prosperity. Today, Gotokuji Temple is a serene and spiritual site adorned with countless Maneki-neko statues, symbolizing good luck and fortune.
Visitors come to Gotokuji to purchase maneki-neko, write wishes on them, and leave them at the temple for good luck. The serene grounds feature traditional Japanese architecture, beautiful gardens, and are especially picturesque during cherry blossom season and autumn. Accessible from Miyanosaka Station, Gotokuji offers a peaceful retreat and a unique cultural experience in Tokyo.
