I really like this channel, I am very lazy so having an aquarium that takes care of itself is perfect. I barely have to touch mine and its great! Not only that but my aquarium looks 20X better than most others, I got into the hobby through the plants since I loved terrariums, turns out an aquarium is just a very wet terrarium if you set it up right. The great thing is that many of these aquarium plants are great in terrariums when grown out of the water.

I set up a tank doing this method on January the 7th in a 75 gallon, about 5" substrate, 3 of dirt and 2 of sand (some parts may be 2 dirt 3 sand, i'm not one for precision) I've never known plants grow like it outside of a CO2 injection system, stems and crypts have been growing at about an inch per day (so much so that I can cut them once per week and spread them around the tank, we went from 5 crypts to 18 in three weeks) , amazon swords have been putting out pups within 3 weeks of being in a brand new tank. My hairgrass hit 4 inches within 2 weeks and is spreading like mad and even pearling. Everything is growing like a weed! If this was common practice 12 years ago i don't think I would have stopped.

I was debating whether I should add a liquid fertilizer or not after seeing one of your videos in which you discussed not planting too deep to force the plants to grow their roots to reach the nutrients. Although I didn't know about your supplement package I did do some additives such as finely pulverized egg shells and compost. About an inch and a half of soil, an inch and a half of sand capped with another inch and a half of natural stream gravel. Methinks I'll hold off using a fertilizer.

Hello @Fatherfish What if I want to lower my pH? I keep (German) Discus and I have extremely high pH 7,5-8 (hardwater). With CO2 I lower the pH to 6.8 and the plants seem to like that and the Discus lay eggs at about 6.8 pH as well. I only know how to lower it with CO2 (and keep it steady because of a pH sensor that supplies more or less CO2) As soon as the CO2 supply stops, it slowly goes back to about 7.5 and swordplants / hydrocotyle / vallisneria dont seem the like it as much as near neutral pH. The tank is more than 1 year old with about 1.5-2 inches of natural mulch plant fertilizer, capped off with about 2 inches of white inert sand

Dear Father Fish I have a question. I have a small 5 gallon of which the largest inhabitants are shrimp, there are no fish in it but a huge variety of critters. It is completely covered in plants. Now I have the following problem. Over time my PH always seems to keep on rising until it starts to affect the life in the tank. Recently all the snails have died and I measured the PH at 9.5 in the late afternoon. My tapwater is around 8 but I mix it 50/50 with reverse osmosis water. It used to be stable at around a ph of 7.3 to 7.5. With some googling, my hypothesis is that the ph rises due to co2 depletion. Do you have any suggestions on what I can best do now to remedy the issue?

Some folks have frozen the supplement and pushed it into the substrate. A good food web will achieve the desired result

Hi Father Fish, should I add plant nutrients in the aquarium as I read elsewhere that iron and magnesium and other nutrients might be missing in fish food? Please advise

Father Fish, is it possible to grow hi-tech plants in a deep substrate aquarium without using CO2 injection? Since a deep substrate is already capable of generating an enormous amount of carbon dioxide
@FatherFish
Жыл бұрын
Do not know what you mean by hi tech plants. The deep substrate as it matures is capable of supporting nearly all aquatic plants.
@gallardo20000

NO. this technique is only good for low tech plants. High tech plants like Rotala macrandra, syngonanthus, ludwigia sp white, etc etc would die off. Also, the morphology of the plants is different when you are injecting CO2. If you want that robust growth with little algae CO2 is absolutely necessary. If it wasn't, green aqua wouldn't use it.

The aquatic plants also utilize Co2 from their leafs which is something he didn't mention in the video. Yes a lot comes from their roots but if you are diffusing Co2 in the water column then they can utilize it from their leafs also. Generally the growth of Co2 injected plants is much faster and robust but more suited to a high light system.

I've been watching the channel for about 8 months, which is how old my beginner tank is. I have maybe 20 plants in a 20 gal tank but just gravel. I don't have mud or humus , just the gravel. I'm wondering if I should start over with a better base, or just get to adding sand on top of the gravel. Tank is healthy, just some algae that build up on the glass, wood, rocks, and on the leaves of the anubias. What should I do about the substrate? Thoughts and comments are welcome! Cheers, and thanks for the content Father Fish. 😊

You can just add sand on top of the gravel. About 2” will do.

Father Fish are you aware of any dwarf cichlids that can do well in hard water? All the Apisto's I've been researching say they need soft water. Even on the websites where I can buy them they are saying this. I don't really care for Tanganyikan dwarfs to be honest.

The. The Central American dwarf cichlids,:aequidens, and ramerizi; in Africa the Jewel and kribensis. These will tolerate hard alkaline water.

Hello father fish, I have a 2month 5gal bowl. Put my first betta in about a month ago. I have your substrate, wood,live plants, heater and small sponge filter. Been fighting ammonia and nitrite from day one. Added 2 platties 3 days ago . Added a little food 2 days later. Been doing waterchanges almost every day . Now it's testing high only in ammonia. Should I stop doing water changes and let the tank take care of itself? I have added the resurrection stuff twice. I have leaves. Do I not harm my fish and delay the evolution of the environment ? Please give me advice on this! This is my third tank following your channel. Thank you!!!

That's harsh. I have revisited your lectures and remembered your earlier lessons. I have locked away the key to my test kit. I have fed my betta and platties. So yes, I am listening. I have listened and followed your lessons. But I am old and I forget. There is a lot to take in, apply and remember. So I forgot, so shoot me... I panicked. Didn't want to kill my first and only betta. Especially since I just added 2 platties and it worked out great. I have trouble connecting to your forums and Schuler. I just know how to ask you when I don't know, or don't remember, what to do. I truly didn't know that you don't want these inquiries. So I apologize. But now I have lost my lifeline to my mentor. Thank you for all you have taught me.

Oh dear. I so hope you found answers to your questions & that all your fishies survived. If you don't know, there are fishkeepers on You Tube who employ methods similar to FF. Just scroll sites till you find them. Try keying in "natural fish tanks" or something similar. Best wishes. 😊 @marioncarter3428
