In 79 AD, ancient Pompeii was completely destroyed by a volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Buildings and people were buried and preserved. The ruined city has been excavated again since the 18th century. The excavation site provides an excellent insight into the life of an ancient Roman city.
Pompeii is located about 25 kilometers southeast of Naples, directly next to modern Pompeii. You should plan at least four to six hours for the visit. Information is available at pompeiisite.org
