The invention of the steamboat in 1807 meant explorers and travellers had a new way to journey across rivers and carry tonnes of cargo with them. However, engineers kept facing a complex issue - how to create a bigger boat, with a shallower draft, which could travel on shallow water.
Finally, they struck gold with The Arabia, a steamboat that could float in just 3ft of water. However, celebrations ceased early, when this innovative boat sank minutes after hitting a tree along the Missouri River, where up to 400 other sunken steamboats were trapped.
Desperate to discover more, today’s experts have managed to salvage 200 tonnes of cargo from The Arabia, but what will they do with it?
