Ecuador's railways had their heyday in the 20th century with the use of the famous rail line between the port city of Guayaquil and the capital city of Quito. The rail line was, at the time of its construction, was one of the most complicated and difficult projects in the history of rail transportation. It provided an efficient way to move people and cargo between a sea-level-port city to one thousands of meters high in the Andes mountains. Its recent decline has many causal factors, and now it is basically out of service completely. Though it may never function again, its interesting history changed the face of the country and its many communities and those changes can be seen all across Ecuador. From right here in Riobamba, a former central hub city along the rail line, we head out to explore that history. Come along!
