Two friends and I hiked to the top of Mount Whitney in June 2012. We began our journey at Whitney Portal, and after 11 miles of hiking and 6,500 feet of elevation gain, we made it to the top of the continental United States.
Even though some people make it to the summit and hike back to Whitney Portal in one day, we chose to hike and explore Whitney and the surrounding wilderness over four days. While we applaud those who are physically able to hike the peak in a day, there is so much to see, and so much the surrounding mountains have to offer, that one day on this trail is simply not enough.
For those of you who are thinking about hiking Mount Whitney, we recommend spending a few nights along the trail (Outpost Camp and/or Trail Camp), so you have the opportunity to see the numerous stars at night, drink from the glaciers, and feel the solitude of the wilderness.
This video is a humble attempt to show what you may experience on the trail. We tried to accomplish this by attaching GoPro cameras to our packs, and capturing thousands of pictures, and hours of video of our four day adventure. This is only a glimpse of the challenges you may face and the rewards you may encounter while on your trek to the top of Mount Whitney. We hope you enjoy our video, and if you have any questions, feel free to email me at JHRoundy@gmail.com.
