In 1961 Brenner, Jacob and Meselson reported a foundational discovery of molecular genetics - the identification of the existence of an unstable intermediate molecule responsible for facilitating the translation of the genetic code in protein. Using Escherichia coli infected with phage T2, they experimentally tested the three commonly argued models of protein synthesis at the time, disproving two and supporting one, and in the process coining the term “messenger RNA”. Not only did this leap in understanding pave the way for future discoveries in the field but it answered questions that had lingered about the nature and relationship of ribosomes and DNA as well as the function of proteins in gene expression. This model provided the foundation required by Nirenberg and Matthaei to begin to solve the genetic code.
