With yard sales and thrift stores there was seemingly a major turning point at or around the wide adoption of the smart phone. Prior to 2010 it wasn't uncommon for me to go to garage sales, yard sales, and find great deals on games. After smart phones became widely adopted two major things changed #1 sellers could very easily look up the going rates on ebay for their merchandise and #2 if the sellers didn't, professional resellers certainly would. It was around 2010 that news stories of Stadium Events selling for 20,000 complete and other widely reported information about video games being collectable started to circulate among the mainstream news in the United States so that if the seller didn't know their games might have value, someone who drives around generally would. This situation has continued to get more and more severe to where people are cross referencing pricing on almost everything now. The 10.00 virtual boys and 4.00 Dreamcasts I would see at thrift stores, garage sales and yard sales would be gone within mere minutes in todays marketplace.

Exactly opposite for me. Most Goodwills, mine included, do not put out retro games anymore. They head straight for the online store where they price it accordingly to get the most out of its value. That's IF the employees don't snag it for themselves or a friend first. Yard sales, on the other hand, have proven to be a great method. But the last 2 years have really destroyed that. It's drying up everywhere now. What used to be weekly pickups, turned to monthly, now are once or twice a year. Most retro games out there are largely in the hands of collectors, and the rest are peppered around.

I remember the first time I went to a yard sale looking for retro games! I had just gotten back from a tennis lesson and was walking home. I saw a yard sale sign pointing down one street, and once I got home I asked my sister to drive me over to check it out. Prior to this, I remember having a conversation about Ocarina of Time with someone at my tennis lesson, (I owned essentially no retro games at the time other than my atari and NES), the conversation concluded with my saying “yeah I might play it eventually, but only if I can do so on original hardware (as opposed to 3DS), which I’ll either never get or get when I have a real job after college or something like that.” Keep in mind I was in maybe 6th grade at the time. Well, what do you know, not only did they have retro games (once I asked-you’re right, always ask), but they pulled out a N64 and a sega genesis along with some loose NES games (I remember buying Ice Climbers there-same copy I have today). I think I payed $12 for the N64 and Ice Climbers and was so ecstatic about the whole ordeal. I bought the Genesis for another $10 once I realized I wanted it too. I’ve had better yard sale finds, and I’ve had hundreds of worse ones, but that was the first, and I was hooked :) As for your question, yard sales were a good source of retro games around four to five years ago when I started looking, but before covid they were definitely starting to slow down. Once covid hit, I thought they were dead for good, In the past year I’ve gone to the occasional sale I see here and there, but with no luck… that is until this past Friday I went out and found some awesome stuff! Nothing super retro, but I found some wii games I’d had my eye out for, and not at a bad price. Maybe I just got lucky, but I wouldn’t be surprised if yard sales are “back.” Sure seemed like it that day!

Thanks for the video, Retro Bird. I had good luck one time (out of maybe 10 total attempts over the years, quite the small sample compared to some). About 7 years ago, I was able to pick up a PS2 with about 10 games for $50. I realize none of it was rare or anything, but I took the opportunity to get a good system with some classic games and played it a bunch. In the years since, I've picked up a couple dozen more PS2 games on Amazon or at used video game stores and am happy with it. In my other (roughly) 9 yard sale attempts (actively looking for SNES, GB, PS2, Wii, GC or really ANYTHING else interesting) I've seen nothing in the wild (except Guitar Hero, which I'm not interested in). I'm pretty confident that today the majority of folks understand old video games have real value and aren't selling at yard sales. The now adult children have asked for and taken back the old box of video games when they visited their parents at Christmas!

Maybe around 3 to 4 years ago, yes. But after 2020 and 2021 finding games at any garage sale or thrift store is pretty much futile. I remember, before the pandemic happened, I was always finding lots of cool games and equipment at most thrift stores and garage sales. My best finds were a pair of PS3 DualShock 3 controllers, a complete Wii console with two Wiimotes, a copy of Mario Party 7 for GameCube, a copy of Mobile Suit Gundam Encounters in Space for the PS2 and Kirby's Epic Yarn on the Wii. All of them were cheap to. Nowadays, it's like trying to squeeze water out of a desert. It's just not fun or worth the time anymore... :(

I just went this weekend, and let me say, things went from slow and rainy to more than worth the effort! I had resigned myself to merely returning home with a 25 cent keychain in terms of spoils, when I walked into a garage and lo and behold: video games! I ended up taking 11 home with me for less than $2 a piece, primarily being PS1 and 360 games. I kept around half and traded in the others at my local game store, still walking away with $53 in addition to the likes of Wipeout and Bubble Bobble!

When it comes to retro tech in general, I have repeatedly found that you'll find the best stuff in wealthier areas. Whether it is at yard sales, the local Goodwill, or even the recycling center. About 10 years ago, I worked for the county recycling center in Montgomery county Maryland. Which also happens to be one the wealthiest counties in the U.S. The stuff that I would find in the electronics recycling bins was astonishing. Sometimes, it would be stuff that is nearly brand new, and other times it would be old stuff which would often include old video game consoles. I loathe to think of how many old games and systems I could have saved if I had known better at the time. Thrift stores and yard sales in these areas yield similar results. That said, yard sales also tend to be less common in wealthier regions too. Generally speaking, I think the general mentality of wealthier people is that it isn't worth their time to sell their old stuff to the highest bidder so to speak. Thus, their priority is simply getting rid of it by the most efficient means possible.

I love going to yard sales, flea markets and thrift stores, but it's just as much because I like the outing it gives me, and I go without expectations. When it comes to video games, finding cheap games there was a staple of my childhood in the 90s. Sadly, since around 2010 I simply cannot find anything pre-PS2. I have just given up the hope because either people know it's valuable and they sell it somewhere else, or it gets snatched right away by professionals who are here first, and I'm certainly not going to try to beat them because it's really not fun.

I’ve had TONS of luck at garage sales. Found a NES action set box once at an estate sale. Only had the nes and light gun (no cords or games). I asked and they said it’s somewhere in the house, feel free to look around. Entombed in an ancient entertainment center I ended up finding a hartzell nes organizer which contained all the cords, another light gun, a turbo plug in, and another nes. They charged me $10. I also once found a game cube with a wavebird super Mario sunshine, Pokémon stadium, and Mario kart for $30. But the ultimate was a box of old Nintendo and Atari stuff for $50 - had a 2600, 5200, 20 Atari games, and 10 nes games all in the box, and an nes advantage and quick shot box in box. All within 20 miles of my house in the last year.

Flea markets are a lot different. They are a lot bigger for one & they specialize in selling all sorts of games. Another thing you should consider is video game conventions. They are the best because everyone brings a ton of video games. Wide selection & you can buy them on the cheap.

I remember as a kid, I set up a table in my mom's yard sale and put up several N64 games for sale, boxes manuals and everything in like new condition. I was like 10 right, I remember this grown man coming up to my table and saying, do you realize I can get this cheaper on eBay? Admittedly I was selling $30 games (new) for like $25, but man eBay was still pretty new (and also, the internet itself) and you pay for the convenience, plus you support a little kid in the neighborhood. My dad helped me check eBay later and lowered prices, and I sold off a bunch of them. Should've held onto those prices (and those games)..

My advice for yard sales and thrifting is to go looking for something other than video games in that is more easily available so it is not constant disappointment. Like you can find perfectly good AV equipment for cheap, maybe try piecemealing a cool retro stereo setup as a example. I also like to pick up VHS tapes, if you have a little kid, try collecting Disney VHS tapes, because toddler is not going to care about video quality and find the physical media novel, along with being super cheap. Got a Disney princess CRT for my daughter in their room with a VCR where they can pick out movies at goodwill for 50 cents. Diversify your hobbies and you will have a better time and hey, maybe once in a blue moon you will stumble on a game or two.

I've had immense luck at yard sales and thrift shops over the years, but I've also spent a pretty significant amount of time pounding the pavement to do so. A few years ago I paid $5 CAD for a mint cib nintendo vs boxing game and watch. It was at a community garage sale on the second day, half burried underneath a double dragon tiger lcd game. Keep looking, you just might have to dig around! I also paid for my Wife's wisdom tooth extraction by selling a single $6 bag of 1" garbage pail kid cheap toy figures from 86 that I found at a thrift store. As an aside I once bought a legit ex rental copy of MUSHA for $9 Canadian dollars from the bargain bin at a used game store in the late 00s. Any time I hear it brought up I cringe because a few years later as a young person with bills to pay for the first time I sold it for $40 to someone else, but as said in the video, at least someone else was winning! When You've done as much buying and selling to support the hobby as I have you're bound to have a few stories like that, but the triumphs far outweigh the slip ups.

Yard sales used to be much better than what they are now. I could tell some stories about great yard sale finds. I think now with the internet people are much more knowledgeable about the value of things and you're very much less likely to find a great deal. I found the original gold cart of Legend of Zelda for about a buck back in 2003 or so, you won't find that anymore. I found some genuinely good stuff- as late as 2014 I got Twilight Princess for Gamecube for about a buck. I also found complete big box PC games, tons of things. But that era is over. Yard sales can still be fun, and are a good place to find furniture or books. But current gas prices sort of put a damper on that, too.

I don’t tend to have much luck with yard sales, but I have done extremely well at thrift stores over the years, even recently I’ve had some incredible game finds. I’ve had low/mid-range success at yard sales. I don’t do it very often anymore. The real key is not to go out looking for “holy grails” like Little Sampson etc etc, but to find the popular/common stuff like Mario Kart or Wii Sports. Rack up enough of those types of games on the cheap then you can go to your local retro game store and trade it in. The $20 or so you spent over a couple of weeks could then turn into like $100-200 of trade-in value that you can then flip for that “holy grail” you’ve had your eye on!

When I lived in Vancouver, B.C 13 years ago, I tried going to a garage sale once and found a complete Gamecube for $15. That was my one and only garage sale. Now, I live in Charlottetown, P.E.I and there are only 132K people in the whole island/province so I don't bother checking to see when or where yard sales are at; not really my jam I guess.

Or you can give them more than what they're asking like I have on cheap Trinitron analog TV's to retro games & systems, however that was several years ago before prices went sky high.

Most platforms these days have been exhausted yard/garage sales thrift stores flea markets pawn shops etc. Retro collecting has become trendy enough. In my area there are groups of reseller's that show up consitantly and fan out the locations. I mostly buy sell and trade amongst collector friends these days.

People around my area not only understand that retro games have value but often boast the prices to rip off levels. A guy locally tried to sell a Chrono Trigger Repro box for 150 CAD, I said dude that is a repro box wth are you doing? He dropped it to 40.... Its worth maybe a buck or 2 at best.

I haven't had a lot of luck at yard sales but retro game stores , conventions and other places yeah there were cool stuff. I love it when they let me try games out and sometimes they do it so I know if I want to get it especially random games that I never heard of or saw before. Cool video. ^_^

I found my PS3 Slim at a garage sale - $40. PSP 3000 model with 10 games for $20 a just had to buy a replacement battery. A binder full of PS1/PS2 games for $5. Finds are definitely fewer and farther between, but they are out there. I like how you said it can be about the experience. With gas prices now, the experience may not even be enough anymore.

The best find I ever made at a yard sale was a NES-101 in brand new condition. They bought it because they were hoping to buy an NES, and they thought they bought the wrong console so not realizing that it was just a newer model of it, they sold it for $5. I think I was around 10 or so when that happened. That was the only good find I ever made. Everything else was usually stuff no one wanted and they probably never sold.

I went to probably 30 yard sales in a town wide event last weekend, and I got about 15 games from 50¢ to $5 being the range I paid. Granted, they were mostly PS3/Xbox 360 games as that is the generation that is really cheap right now. But hey, I got a game for $3 that was worth $40 so that was cool! (I did not know what it was worth until after I payed for it) I went to another one a few weeks ago and they had plenty of older generation games but they were all properly priced and they didn’t have anything I was looking for at game store prices.

I found a complete boxed PS2 at a garage sale in my street, it even had the PS2 remote control and the purchase receipt. I Paid $5 for it. Traded at GameStop to buy a PS4 controller. I wish I kept the box. I found a copy of silent hill 2 at Goodwill for $4. Sold it on eBay. I used to go to thrift stores, and garage sales if I would drive by them. Not anymore.

I like what you said at the end. In my region of the country, there are NO cheap retro games. Not at yard sales, not at thrift stores, not at flea markets, none of them. The only thing I’ve had any luck with is online listings (e.g. Facebook, CL, etc.) but they are so rare and far between, I’ve stopped looking on there. To me, having to check FB three times a day for a month to find one deal is not worth saving a couple hundred bucks on videos games I likely don’t even want. Honestly, I’d be better off spending that time just earning more money to buy stuff easily online. And that’s how I feel about game hunting in general. Can you find stuff cheaper if you hunt? Sure but having to deal with strike out after strike out is not worth it to me. I just get annoyed and unmotivated.

Never found any games at a yard sale. But the all-time best stoop pick-up I got was when someone left a Quentin Tarantino Blu Ray Box Set right on their steps, because they didn't want it anymore. That was a good day. I live in Brooklyn where finding space in your living quarters is just as valuable as stuff sometimes, so stoop items like books, CDs, and movies aren't too uncommon. That however was a rare and great find, not one I would expect ever again. Though who knows maybe someday someone will leave a Chibi Robo or Panzer Dragoon Saga on their stoop. One can dream.....haha

I know I already commented on the video but I actually have a question this time. I'm not sure if you'll actually see this or if it'll get lost in the sea of comments, but I wanted to ask what games you would recommend to someone looking to get into retro gaming? I grew up with mainly ps2 and for a bit I had ps1 but don't remember much of those years since I was too young other than playing frogger and pac man world so I started gaming moreso when games got a bit easier. I've always had a fascination with older retro games but always found the difficulty of a lot of them to be a big barrier to entry. I recently got a crt TV for playing my wii, ps2 and ps1 on but wanna try to get some older games like snes and genesis too. I know some obvious ones would be say link to the past or sonic 2 which I have played both on newer systems with save states and rewind features and stuff. I think this could be a good potential video topic for you, discussing more forgiving but fun games that can be good gateway games for people looking to get into retro gaming more. I know most here watching your channel already have a lot of experience with retro gaming but for the onlookers who just have an interest in the topic might find that really useful! I've always watched videos about retro games like avgn or stop skeletons from fighting and more recently slopes game room, it's just a bit harder to get into and where to start.

I've gotten some yard sale goodies over the years. Felix the Cat, Batman Return of the Joker and Hillsfar for a dollar each ten years ago. I did get a free copy of Aladdin on Snes once when I bought all the Snes games a guy had but told him I didn't need Aladdin because I already had 2 copies and he said well now you have three! More recently I scored Pokémon Leaf Green for a few bucks.

"Beyond Video Games"... This statement does not compute. If you find a game that's in bad shape, with damaged label or missing case/manual, you could always (dare I say it)... Buy repros! If you're ok with that and not looking to preserve the value which has already been lost, that is.

I used to get dragged out to these HAM radio conventions when I was a kid. It was probably 91or 92 and I came across a NES cartridge that had a small hole cut out with dip switches. I remember being curious as hell about it, and the seller told me it toggled it's difficulty and told me it wasn't a full game and I lost interest. About 20 years later I found out what it was. I can't be upset about it though, because in 98 my older crackhead sister had stolen and pawned all my games. 😟 I'm just glad I got to see one.

Great video! I've actually never found anything at yard sales either. It always felt like trying to find a needle in a haystack to me. If you do try, it probably makes the most sense to just outright ask the people if they have any games for sale so you don't waste your time. Perhaps if you knew the people that were having the yard sale and know that they have video games already it might be worth checking out. As for just going to a random yard sale, I'd suspect most times you'll come up empty. In fact, I rarely even see yard sales in my area.

Best time to hit a yard sale is sad...January. After all the Christmas stuff was bought that family found out they bought too much stuff & reality just hit them hard. This is the only month I go to Yard Sales as I did find some Switch Games once. The other is MOVING SALES. Maybe the don't have room for all there video games & sometimes you can find Video Games that way! I go to them with low expectations as there are better methods now a days to getting Retro Video Games. But those are my bird seeds of information for ya. Take it as you will.

I think you have more luck to find something in the US instead of Europe. We dont really have ‘yard’sales. Instead this are areas or streets whete vendors can request some space to stand on. Anyway, if you find some PS2 stuff its already a rare deal lol

Success videos on any topic have screwed up the expectations of so many people. Beyond retro games, I fish, and the success fishing days folks share on KZitem are so misleading and annoying. Nobody's filming the MANY full days of not getting a single bite and feeling miserable. Thankfully. I fish to be in the great outdoors, catching something is just a bonus.

In the late 80s my mom bought me an Atari 2600 with a big box of games for $50 bucks at a yard sale. I didn’t think I was gonna get an NES that year so I said yes. I enjoyed them for a few months but then Xmas of that year my mom bought me the NES Action Set. You don’t find anything good anymore at yard sales which is very sad.

I'm kind of in a position where I like to go to yard sales and garage sales regardless of if I find anything I want. Though one time I went to a garage sale and the only video game thing they had was a Dualshock 3 and I didn't own a PS3 at the time so I passed on it. Years later now that I do own a PS3 I can't find a first party controller for it which really busts my balls.
