Going too big on the carb is more likely to make you run lean, due to less suction in larger venturis at a given flow rate. I had a 1978 Granda ESS, 2-dr, in fire blue metallic. Loved the car with the stylish cornering lamps, landau top and that distinctive European look. The only problem was that it had a 250-6 cylinder. A huge downgrade in power after having giving up my ‘71 Roadrunner with the 383. I kept the Granada for 15 years with no major issues. I was seriously thinking of swapping the inline 6 with a 460 which would have been the ultimate sleeper. However, bought my first truck, a 93 Ford Ranger 2-dr, long bed. I had it for 19 years until the tranny gave out. This build you have going with the Ghia will be definitely sensational in both rumble and power! Anxiously awaiting the final product.

My first was a '77 Monarch 2dr, baby blue, dark blue vinyl top. Inherited it when Pap passed, '81. Put some ET 5 window mags on it, drove it for years. Really dependable, 302, C4. You would have a hard time shoehorning a 460 between the shock towers, probably have to go with a Mustang II-type IFS. Even with the 302, mine would push (under steer) in the corners. A BB 460 is going to be even worse. I later bought a '75 Monarch with a 250, 3 speed. Drove it into the ground. Would love to find another 250 for my '61 Falcon resto. Great aftermarket aluminum heads available now for these Sixes. I did find a wrecked Fairmont with a 200, 4 speed. It sat for a few years, I am currently soaking the pistons / rings with a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF. If it isn't locked up, I'll just use it until I can find and build a 250. Sorry, I just like those "6 in a row" engines. Couple of side-draft Webers and a T56 trans, should be a cute little ride. I'll post a vid when I get her going.
@Kekaula100

@@jeffhale2278 Hey, Jeff. Thanks for the feedback. We considered the tight fit with the shock towers, but given your experience with the 302, the under steer was not factored in. My ESS was a great unique vehicle which I enjoyed for 15 years. After it was sold I’ve seen it on the road for about two years after. The only “performance” item that I had installed was a Trans Go shift kit which distinctively gave a much harder, quick shift. A lcracked intake exhaust manifold was the only issue that I experienced. A replacement was found somewhere in the Midwest.

The 289/302 was pretty compact for a V8. The later Granada was on the Fox platform. Still good for holding a 302 but not as roomy. Ford at one point was allegedly considering discontinuing the V8 in all of the Fox cars in favor of V-6es and, for performance cars, turbo 4-cylinders, and fortunately, never did. For a bit in the early 80s there was a really puny 255 V-8 that often had a Variable Venturi carb and the whole thing was about as appealing as a stint in a Turkish prison.

I spent a year building a 5.0HO to replace the stock 90 5.0 HO I have in the car. Stock block crank rods with ARP bolts. Diamond flat tops 65 grams lighter than OEM forged pistons and I used the stock 90 5.0 HO hyd roller camshaft. I added 79 302 heads which I had Indy Cylinder Heads weld the water passages which where a long slot right under the intake ports to strengthen the head deck surface at 12 noon. I also added one water steam hole at ever chamber .312” x 8 places. Ported exhaust ports shortened exhaust guides in the port 3/8” installed 351-w valves exhaust and intake from PEP with Rail Tips so I could use Comp Cams Magnum Roller tipped cast rockers. Along with special length ARP rocker studs because I milled the rocker boss too much.😢 Thanks to Bob F. @ ARP he saved my butt.🎉 Left intake ports alone. Stock length Moly push rods gave best valve tip to rocker travel. So I had Amy old Friends Dyno the engine I was very happy it made 296 hp at 5500. Forget the torque. Anyway about 96 more than the engine in the car. Life steps in and my daughter needed hip and leg surgery so I sold the engine. It was in a Fox body and the kid sprayed it with 15 bottles. Then it was sold because he had melted the plastic oil pressure line and thought he had hurt the engine. Naaa I used coated rods and mains, welded a big baffle covering the oil sump in the stock pan with a 5/8 351-w pickup tube and Boss 302 windage tray. Oh crankshaft and windage tray both coated by Carl Benton at Poly Dynamics in TX who licenses Calico to use his system. Engine was unhurt. So it’s in a 56 Ford street show car for the last 20 years haaa.

Big giant sway-bars front and back...stock rate springs...eight inch wide, fourteen inch steel rims, factory existing wheel-covers, 245/60-14 tires, limited-slip rear-end, a built C4 to hold the horsepower. Big four pass radiator, Full spec pads & shoes.. This would make for a wonderful sleeper...& nobody would even look twice.

My mom bought my cousin Eddie a 1979 Ford Granada 2-door Sedan 5.0L V-8 (man. 4 speed) The color was something close to Garnet red with a black landau roof in 1984 for his 16th birthday.. Although grateful I think he was a little disappointed it wasn't a Mustang... That was until he drove it and discovered it was a 3,200lbs screaming V8 4spd rocket ( At the time ) Then he got it and was glad it wasn't a Mustang.. To him it was something better, it was a sleeper

Would be good to explain what the number 3456 comes from for those of us who care. If you do care, It's 1728 (number of cubic inches in a cubic foot, or 12x12x12) multiplied by the number of revolutions a 4-stroke engine needs to complete all four cycles, or 2. 1728x2 = 3456. That equation also assumes the engine is operating at 100% volumetric efficiency, which is unlikely, but a fine way to size your carb.

Another great video. You guys work well together. Wish you could have spent more time on cam shaft degreeing. Maybe you can explain on what you did.

Something's fishy with opening storyline. A really well maintained car - and the owner doesn't mention a .60 overbore??? Plus you just happened to have a .30-over block laying around. Come on... Just be honest. Don't get me wrong - I'm really loving the sleeper aspect of this project. It's a perfect vehicle! Really well done video. It's just that the block swap is highly suspicious ;)

I had a 78' Granada ES back in the mid 80's. Pulled the 302 out and replaced it with a HiPo 289 warmed up, couldn't run an air cleaner because of clearance issues. When I ran it at the Tulsa International Raceway before the change, it ran a whole 86 MPH in the quarter. Sorry, I don't remember the ET. After the 289 was installed, beefed up c-4 with a 3000 stall and 3:55 geared 8.8 limited slip, it ran 11.97 best. Drove it every day and to go play. Once raced a guy with a blue Camaro 6 times in one night at the strip, because he couldn't believe a Granada beat him. That's 6 times at 100.00 a race! It looked like Grandmas car, because it was. Fun times!!!

I built a '82 Granada/fox platform sleeper wagon. '89 EFI , 5 spd, street mods. They're light weight and cheap to build. Ran 13.2 @ 102 @ 3500 ft. Calgary. A daily driver that smoked a Ferrari Mondial and just beat an LS powered Z28, much to their surprise. A boatload of dumb fun, and that's a good thing.

Thst 347 is a bad mamajamma... but a stroked out 351w in her....even a 408 410 or 426 would generate so much more torque with those heavy cars....Very nice. I LIKE

I bought a '79 Mercury Monarch new. It had the weezy inline 6. The early 2000's maybe late 90's I converted it to an 85 Mustang GT V8. That car was a blast to drive. Drove it like that for a few years and eventually sold it. 2 door black with a burgandy interior. Embarrassed SO many other cars,,good times. I certainly understand the feelings.
