On the diamond tool. As a Zerspanungsmechaniker (German for lathe operator but the job is a bit more that just operating the machines) I can tell you that the Diamond tool likely worked worse than usual cutting discs for the steel. Thats because you cannot work ferrous metals with them as the carbon preferably binds to the metal. The "diamond" structure basically gets ripped apart and the tool turns uselessly blunt very quickly. A normal metal cutting disc is the way to go, these diamond discs usually get used for stone or ceramics.

@@craigsmith8217 No. It would not. Its a basic physical property of the carbon crystal lattice that makes up the diamond and the high binding force of carbon to the ferrous metal. The iron, even if its steel its still made mostly from iron, pulls carbon atoms out of the crystal lattice and destroys it. And under pressure and heat, as when cutting, that very quickly destroys the tool.

I think I see how drying out causes a wheel to become felloe-bound. Assuming the spokes and felloes shrink the same (both being longitudinal grain), as the spoke shortens by 1%, the felloes would have to shrink by π/2 or about 1.57%, leaving the felloes too long by about 0.57% of the shrinkage. I was astounded to see how floppy the wheels were without the compression of the tires. They seem so solid when you are assembling them.
@LesNewell
2 жыл бұрын
Judging wood shrinkage can be tricky. I make decorative turned wooden knobs for one of my customers. The knobs have a recess for a plastic disc. One batch was made from Rosewood. I allowed a fairly generous shrinkage allowance in the recess but a month later my customer came back to me complaining that the recesses were too small. Another batch was made from Ovangkol and I used the same allowance. A little later my customer commented that the recesses were too big. Sometimes you just can't win.

Not surprised that you did not get performance out of the diamond wheel. Lots of reasons for this. The micro geometry of the diamond will not “cut” a material that can move out of the way. There is no sharp edge. The biggest reason that diamond is not a good match for any iron based material is that when it gets hot, the iron wants to suck up carbon. Diamond IS carbon. I am not sure how the “diamond” was made, as it was almost assuredly synthetic. Synthetic diamond is pressed with cobalt. They have different thermal expansion rates, with the cobalt being greater. When they heat up, the cobalt fractures the diamond. This is why “leached” cutters are popular in polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDC) cutters used to drill oil wells. The cobalt is leached out. If the grit used in the blade happed to be natural diamond, there would not be cobalt expansion. Diamond is the hardest material we know, UNTIL it gets hot, and then it gets soft. The small grits will quickly loose any edge they had by virtue of being tiny, and will develop flat spots. It will then be very difficult to push hard enough to make the saw cut. Sorry for the long rambling, but between 1990 and 2017 I spent a lot of time designing PDC drill bits for the oil patch, and also designed a grit based style used to drill the hardest rock. I just though this might be of some interest.

I have been working with train wheels and we have been using cutting tools for this (Saw in Gråkalbanen we used an old cold saw. And in Bergen they use a chain saw). I also think you will do better with a ordinary circle saw with hard metal blade and a drop of oil. This angle grinder is dangerous and its a lot of sparks. I did have a battery circle saw in my car fore some years and i was rely amassed of the performance. I think you have the tool. you only need the blade. I might not have to tel you that you can sharpen them several times. Then they are not so expensive.

Woodturners sometimes use a solution made from iron and vinegar to darken wood that has a high tannin content, like oak or walnut. It's made by soaking steel wool (0000 ... four oh) in vinegar for a few days and then straining out the steel wool. You can find more information by searching for "ebonizing solution." It may be helpful if you wash the steel wool in soapy water first. Also, don't let the mixture sit for more than a week before straining or you will get "mud," which makes a bit of a mess. Once the solution is made, it will keep in a tight jar for an extended period.

Was wondering what would come after 4, 5 or A? You may want to c-clanp a 2 x 4 across the top queues of tires to prevent a domino accident? We had the same occurances on our injection mold plates disassembled for core and cavity maintenance. Our molds consisted of 5 - 10, 1 3/8" - 5 7/8" thick, 9 7/8" - 23 7/8" wide by 11 7/8" - 35 7/8" long steel plates, catastrophe always occured near the end of their storage making lots of loud noise (fortunately no one ever was injured). Resolved it by threading an eyebolt on each plate's top side and inserting a piece of black water pipe. Garrett's Woodwerx "Dualing Cable Hoists" observation is spot on. For years our tool makers used a 3' long round bar threaded Johnson Bar into an eyebolt hole to rotate an assembled mold from the bottom to a side on the assembly bench (larger molds would require more than one person). Visiting a mold sampling shop in Windsor, Canada I observed their 15 ton hoist had a 5 ton auxiliary on the same overhead beam, both controlled from the same box. One to lift and one to rotate/turn, no toolmakers flying through the air to turn a mold there! Again watching your clever solutions are our pleasures. Stay safe.

Those diamond wheels tend to cut much slower, but handle more materials and last longer, despite diamond being soluble in hot iron. Best use for them in my opinion would either be stone work, or having one in a field bag to fall back on if you run through the rest of your abrasive discs and aren't in a position to go back and get more. I wouldn't have expected them to hold up as long in ferrous materials as I've seen them do in tests, but iron might still be the worst thing to cut with them

diamond disc better for very hard materials like ceramics the regular disc great for ferrous... by the by, they 'cut' by melting the steel at the disc edge if the pressure is firm enough and the tool is powerful. goes very fast....compared to 'grinding' where the disc removes particles. In the steel industry they actually use a high temperature steel disc and lots of pressure and power to 'cut' steel beams no abrasives.
