There’s also lots of vending machines and sometimes even convenient-type stores that CMs can use to buy snacks. Most CMs I worked with preferred these options because of the convenience and they’re often cheaper than buying park food (as CMs don’t get discounts on most food places). The parking thing is absolutely true, but a little hard to enforce (at least it was when I worked there 9 years ago). Taking a guess with no food while in costume could be a one size fits all scenario to avoid costume getting dirty from food. Costumes that vary from a simple outfit, to a full mascot-esque costume would probably be kept as nest as they can at the park. Also, even if these costumes can get dirty from an accident (ex. spilled food from a guest). The cast are probably tasked to be as careful as they reasonably can.
@ash_rob_artist4556

Actually we are allowed to eat in costume, we can even go out for food after our shifts. The problem lies within immersion, they don’t want someone in fantasyland grabbing a bite to eat in Tomorrowland, because it ruins the immersion. We also are not meant to leave our area for anything aside from going to lost and found, we’re not even allowed to take guests to the front of the park unless a leader permits us. So it’s less that they have issue with us getting our costumes dirty (we clean out the slushee machines in our colonial dresses, they genuinely don’t care), and more that they want us staying where we work.

There's more perks than cons for cast members. Of cast member go to the park, they don't pay for parking or tickets. There's various cafeterias for the staff, If you're spotted eating when you're not on your break, you will be fired. For the perks you get, I'd say it's a fair trade. My sister and dad used to work for the Disney company. There's a lot that I know. 😊

"You have to turn in the costumes after you are done with them" *side eyes the 5 full sets of costumes that I have had checked out for 5 months* 😬😬😬😬 Nah, you keep those things. Once you find something that fits, it's yours until you leave or you'll never get it again.

Some food is a lot better in the park than what they sell us in the back areas but I only treat myself to that on rare occasions. I wear normal clothes anyway so I don't bother changing, I just remove the name tag. You'd have to be pretty dumb to visit the parks on the same day you call in sick. Since you represent the company, even off the clock, it's better to behave yourself.

Question, if you can’t to the parks on sick days, and other days you work, how do they actually go to the parks on off time, is there paid vacation? Week of leave?

Some of those rules are pretty reasonable especially the food one because it is kinda taking away from the magic when you see an employee eating with guests, I’m glad there is an option to change out of your clothes temporarily so it doesn’t ruin the magic at all. Ofc this is my opinion so don’t bash me

My favorite rule is the disney point. Ask any member of staff for directions and I ASSURE you they will ALWAYS use two fingers to point. Some say its because Walt always had a cigarette inbetween those fingers, but for real it's because it's an international attraction, and the one finger point is considered rude in many countries.

Not true about changing clothes. You are not permitted in the same park out of costume if you have been onstage the same day. Also not exactly true about having to scan in with guests. You can enter the park via any door including back stage exits if you are dropped off by shuttle for example.

the eating in the parks rule isn’t really a “rule” in the sense that there’s cafeterias backstage where cast members get a discount and they don’t have to wait in absurdly long lines filled with day guests. Also for the costume when you get hired you can sign up to take the costumes home, you aren’t forced to return them at the end of the shift.

Some more context - trading shifts or getting approved time off can be really hard depending on your location, and you won't know if your time off is approved until within two weeks of the date, even if you requested it months in advance. So let's say your family lives out of state and has had a trip planned for a year, but you can't get the time off. Some would be tempted to call out -- Disney lets you do a normal call-out AND a call out sick. You'll get in serious trouble going in the parks for the first one, and fired for the second. That's all on top of the "points" you get just for calling out, which will also add up to termination. (More in reply)

It's also a seniority based system, not based on who asked for it first. I knew some people who had worked there for a few years and would request the entire year off so they always had first dibs on vacation days (there's no limit). It's the same with getting your schedule - it's completely based on seniority. So if you take college classes or have another job or something, you're out of luck, and trading shifts every single week.

I was a cast member at the Disneyland Resort in California for a short time. Hence, short time… being on the cast member side you experience how rude and entitled people are. I am a super nice person and always did my job to a T to make the guests’ experience magical. And I never really thought people would be mean especially at Disneyland.
