I do miss the ushers as some people are just really rude these days. Went to see minus 1 and there were a group of kids who would. NOT SHUT UP. While Inside Out 2 isn't a bad movie by any stretch, I did feel kind of disappointed by it because the plot was way too similar to the first film, with the main theme boiling down to, once again, needing to live alongside positive and negative emotions rather than focusing too much on one or the other. It's certainly the best Pixar film we've gotten in a while, but I don't love it. There's too many missed opportunities, especially with the new emotions like you said.

It's generally how it is...except...say...the 3rd will reveal that there ARE people who are just wicked by nature, and we get to see someone trying to harm Riley, and then see a bit of "Malice" grow in her head towards this one person Understanding that some are just evil is also part of life, and their reason for being evil varied...from bullies who want to feel superior, psychopaths trying to feel "New sensations", and power hungry people making others suffer for personal gain
@ryan.c.s

Technically, it's a more nuanced perspective on the first movie. The first movie focuses on "not everything is about being happy," and you can take that lesson and go. I saw the newer movie like how you'd write an argumentative essay. You reassert the previous points while adding nuance through counter-argument. It also sprinkles in more relevant things with how we grow. When you get older, you have to get more serious, and you "feel less joy," as Joy says in the climax. The "losing your sense of self" thing also applies. It's a similar thing and point, but the context that surrounds it makes the story more compelling. But that's just my opinion.

Honestly I hate the new emotions and feel that they're completely unnecessary. Especially Anxiety. The moment I saw that little orange abomination I was honestly repulsed and was even more disturbed to find out that Anxiety wasn't alone. First of all, Anxiety is just another form of Fear as is Embarrassment. Envy could be escribed to Anger, since Anger cares about things being fair. And Ennui?....seriously that one just feels forced. (had to look that one up) Two, the first film firmly established that everybody gets FIVE emotions, even cats and dogs! Yes I suppose they could had been off screen this whole time in other minds that we see, but that's a bit of a stretch. Especially when in the end we see the new emotions working in conjunction with the original five that we were first introduced to. Third, this whole plot is once again exploring what the first film covered. How we need negative emotions now and then for various reasons. And the plot opens up with them shooting negative memories off into the distance having apparently forgotten the previously mentioned. Keep in mind I've only read the synopsis of the plot, but combined with the new character designs, premise and set up, it's enough to make me give this film a hard pass. Some times it's just better to trust your gut and to stay clear of an iceberg if you see certain signs. Now I won't lie, I may be a little bias here. Disney these days I feel has backstabbed and insulted it's audience left and right. And I'm not in too big of a hurry to give it any of my money.

As someone who struggles with anxiety, I had no problem with it being framed as an antagonist. Why? Because sometimes it feels like anxiety is working against me and trying to sabotage my progress. It also helps that Joy isn’t entirely in the right either. Her plan is to just tell Anxiety to “stop worrying.” Then she realizes it’s not that simple. Besides, Anxiety later helps Riley remember to study for her Spanish test. It very much shows that small amounts of anxiety can be helpful.

My explanation for why the parents don't have the other emotions is that the reason that Riley has them in the main office, is that she is a teenager. She isn't developed yet, her mindscape is still building out, changing and evolving. Aka, all of the emotions, negative and positive, are situated in one place at one time and all vying for control. With anxiety being such a control freak, due to teenagers usually falling prey to anxiety, and having it take control over their life (and bottling up emotions). The parents in their adult minds, are way more structured. I imagine that if we were to expand them out a bit, we would see the parents minds as "ranked offices" if that makes sense? The core emotions in the main office, and branching out to the other ones, ranked dependant on how strong they are within said individual. that is why we find that the dad still has anxiety in his main office, as he maybe struggled (and still do) with it in the past, so anxiety is around the corner. That is just my interpretation of course, it is more liekly they didn't think about it that well.

@@rosverlegaspo6752I think thats why Elemental was so polarizing. It seems like it was ment for a specific type of audience, immigrant families that had same experience of the director. Which isn't bad and is actually good to show the stuggle they go through. But thats the issue, not every immigrant family has the same experiences that the director went through. I'm also from a family that moved to the usa but I couldn't realate to the fire lady's problems at all, heck I related more with Wayn. And the rest of the movie was ok, the romance was cute but honestly it was nothing special outside of that specific niche (and the awful world building). It's probably why it struggled in america so much, It didn't have anything else for people to lach on too other than that niche and it was too big for it.

@@ohwell1547 It doesn't have to be the same experience. Almost no one experienced what Simba experienced (most aren't Royal after all), but most people love The Lion King. No one have experiences similar to James Bond, or Harry Potter, or Alice in Alice in Wonderland, etc.. Most stories are actually popular because it provides an experience that you would never experience in real life. This isn't really the true issue with Elemental. For me, the biggest issue with Elemental is the "elemental" aspect of the world itself. Like, how does that enrich or help tell the immigrant angle of the story? It is something that the story has to work around with rather than have it working with the story. It is like, they really like the idea of a world populated by beings themed around the four elements, or they just go with the Pixar signature of turning inanimate things to animated characters, but can't really integrate it into the story or create a story stemming from it. A similar example in their catalogue is Onwards. All the fantasy elements in there just doesn't really mesh well with the family themes that is going on. Essentially, the setting and the story itself just isn't working well together, forming a story that is disjointed from its setting and vice versa. The result is the story suffering a bit and the setting suffering a bit, both feeling somewhat half-cooked. Compare these to like Toy Story. The concept of living toys is integral to the story itself and its themes.
@ohwell1547

@@rosverlegaspo6752 Thats why I said there needs to have more for the audience to lach on. The examples you give have the hooks for people to watch, like James Bond. The hook IS the spy adventure, to beat super villain terroists and look swave while doing so. Reliability be damned. But Elemental is just the immigrant story, it's one of the core plot points, motivation for the main lead at the start, her backstory, and the one thing defenders of the movie always bring up as a defense. (Pun not intended) But the cast doesn't have strong personalities or character dynamics, the world building falls apart when you think about for more than 3 seconds, and the love story feels secondary even though it was advertised as that. Heck the fact that water mom brings up language as force drama is ment for people to be like "I've been through that, thats relatable." But others will be like "I've never experince this." or "I have, but she's really overreacting to something this minor?" (The latter is defently the majority in america) Hence why I say it's too big for a niche. The element part could work with the story but needs alot more planning and it shows. In my opinion, replace elements with furries like Zootopia, it can at least fix one issue.

Surprising to learn about that behind the scenes "no promoting/hiring white dudes" bit. Well not SURPRISING, all things considered, but y'know what i mean. But yeah with the "personal vs generalized story" thing. I guess as Inside out shows, the key is a balance, but for the ones that do lean more towards personal, maybe they should lower expectations and understand they'll likely only be really impacting a relatively nicher audience, idk. Like, i dont NEED every piece of entertainment to be a relatable parallel to my own personal life, but at the same time I'm not going to go out of my way to watch like, Turning Red as someone that isn't an Asian Canadian girl going through puberty or whatever its about. And from what i hear Turning Red doesn't really have a hook beyond conveying that specific experience. So it comes back again to what you mentioned about striking a good balance and incorporating personal experience well into the writing, or maybe just leaving it as an inspiration and not making it the plot in and of itself. Idk.

I really hope they compare inside out 2 to lightyear and not luca or turning red and they realize it's the quality of the movie not the IP it's a part of that'll make or break it anymore Inside out 2 is breaking records while lightyear was seen by tens of people and even fewer stayed awake through for the whole thing

A really good fan explanation on why the new emotions aren't present in the adults is because unlike Riley, they have learnt how to control and decide their emotions, all the core members on the control panel aren't a complete stereotypical representation of that emotion, instead all complementing each other. Anxiety and the others is present in their minds, but they take a backseat and don't hold much power and control over their actions. But that's a fan fix for this particular plot hole, lets be honest pixar probably didn't think that far ahead for a sequel to a movie they made 9 years ago

I keep hearing good things about Inside Out 2, but I still feel nothing. I have no care to check it out, I have no desire to feel excited, I simply don’t care anymore. That says a lot about how bad it’s been, I can’t even bother to get my hopes up and check out this new film. It doesn’t matter if it’s overhyped or genuinely good, part of me thinks “it’s lightning in a bottle, this changes nothing”. I’ve never felt so apathetic towards anything. It’s almost impressive, and it genuinely worries me.

I really liked Inside Out 2, I thought the new emotions were interesting and voiced well, especially Anxiety, who I thought was a good antagonistic figure for the movie. I also thought the new cast for some of the old characters did a good job sliding right in for the others and in some case doing better. I also like that this was a sequel that didn't destroy continuity or character development like many others do and it also felt like a sequel that deserved to be made, because the human mind is constantly evolving, even long after the brain stops growing, so this allows a lot of wiggle room for a sequel to be made, and I think focusing on one of the most turbulent times for one's life. The step backs this movie takes for me is that I wish they did more with Riley and the others, as in more scenes with the human characters, and I felt that the concept of puberty starting to change Riley felt a tad underutilized. But my absolute favorite parts of the movie include Joy saying maybe this is what happens, you feel less joy when you grow up, the I'm not good enough sense of self kicking in, the 1984 reference with the imagination land, the anxiety attack scene, and the mixed sense of self being created. Overall I think this is a great movie, and one that I really resonate with watching it as an adult.

I heard Inside Out 2 was getting all this praise for actually being good and I want to believe that statement, but at the same time I am skeptical. The critical and box office success of Inside Out 2 could lead to Disney/Pixar making the wrong decisions such as "sequels are good" and not "movies with well-written stories and pacing are good"

I just went to see Inside Out 2 the other day and I adored it! As a teen that is currently navigating puberty this was extremely relatable, and in my opinion, an even better movie than the first one - though I might just think that because I haven't seen Inside Out 1 in a while. Also my personal head cannon as to why the cast of emotions from the sequel aren't present in the parent's brain for most of the second movie and the whole first movie is because when kids get to adolescence their emotions become more complex and diverse (creating the new characters we see in Riley's head), and because that change is sudden they juggle all these emotions at once not really knowing how to handle them, but as they get older they learn to control these secondary emotions that were seen in the second movie thus the emotions becoming less used and therefore only popping up at headquarters occasionally (as seen in the case of Riley's parents).

Actually Nostalgia is also a positive emotion but u fortunately she was one that was shelved. Had she been involved in this movie more, the second film would’ve been avoided all together since Riley would’ve been too melancholy to desert her friends. I wouldn’t say all the other emotions are all negative either, a couple of them are more neutral. Plus you could say that a couple of the emotions can be known by multiple names like Ennui who is also known by Boredom. Kind of like how Envy could also be known as Ambition. I’d say sadness is a neutral emotion as well.

I've been in the cinema for inside out 2 and I quite enjoyed it, even if I expected some very different scenarios with the new emotions. Also I think there's some lost potential here on "becoming a woman", which as we all know, messes up our emotions a hella lot. That would've been interesting to watch as well but yeah, too gross for the young audience I guess. A shame. On the other hand the yellow bag was waaaay too cringe for us adult audience 😂 But all in all the movie was great. I'm curious if we see her again or if Rileys Story ends in puberty already. Which would also be a great shame. And disney... once upon a time bigD was a major reason for me to go to cinema. But that's been long gone. It's so sad watch them greeding and killing all emotions and stories for money only. Also they don't understand today's society at all... it's not only about being a strong independent woman. We can have love interests, we can be weak and rely on guys sometimes. And we're not akorable (at least not everyone). The only thing that needed some upgrades in original Disney films was the "oh I met a prince, lets marry him! Bc that's my only purpose in life" mindset the old movies often carried. It got better over time but now D is as lost as never before, at least imo.

Inside out 2 was a okay film that had it’s flaws and straights, but I understand what your saying it felt like it wasn’t weighted down by disneys political, progressive or corporate side and felt rather genuine despite me not being a fan of the new emotions and etc. And in general i think Disney's gonna eat well especially with deadpool, Moana 2 and mufasa. Tho I hope they learn something from this and don’t pump out sequels that Pete doctor was eluding too.

I feel-no believe-that Disney and Pixar will take the wrong lesson of the success of Inside Out 2 and think the audiences wants more sequels instead of original movies. Not seeing that no one wants any more sequels to pre-existing movies like Frozen 3 & 4 as a huge example. And it’s sad that when they do make an original film, the story doesn’t feel like how Disney use to be before their pandering

The pandemic has had many after-effects, especially in the Entertainment industry. Because no one could come to the movie theaters and the many streaming services, there are not many people who really go to the movies anymore. The gaming industry is doing even worse but in a different way the Pandemic actually made gaming grow but it happened so fast that game companies not called Nintendo couldn't keep up with the Demand for video games and now almost all video games are Unfinished and are way too expensive to make and take far too long to make

I really liked Inside out 2, it had me balling when her new sense of self had conflicting thoughts. But I disagree with what you said in 5:30 The entire point of Inside Out is that no emotions are "negative." Heck in the very first scene we see anger motivate Riley to score a goal, fear remind her to wear a mouth guard, and disgust stop her from using someone else's own. Even anxiety was only negative because she put wayy too much pressure on Riley, when she should've simply been a voice of caution to potential future events. Our emotions are neither positive or negative, it's letting them determine our actions that can have positive or negative effects on our lives.

I agree with most of this, except I personally didn't have a problem with how envy was used because I think that's the intention. Like envy was a lot more subtle, she'd often fuel anxiety (E.g. Like with the notebook, she'd bounce off of anxiety and just make her worry even more) and I think that's more realistic - feelings of envy are often subtle, and I like the way that her effect on Riley was more subtle in that she'd just feed into anxiety's anxiety.

I honestly loved the movie, it expanded greatly upon the original movies concepts, and I loved the progress of Riley coming into her own more not letting her emotions control her as much anymore and allow her to make her own choices. The Original had some too but not as much the most definite being Anger saying “She took it” after giving Riley the idea of running away showing the ultimately Riley has final say on all choices she makes

5:32 I wouldn't say they were all negative: Envy was portrayed much more as Admiration/Determination/Desire. Whenever Envy was using the console Riley was never shown being envious of others, rather she was desiring or admiring something. I think the reason Red or Lucca also didnt do as well as expected is cause i feels and looks that their directors were really naive and unexperienced with storytelling. Cause no, copypasting your own life doesnt make a story inmediately good. The Incredibles is also based on Brad B life/work struggles, but he managed to make his own premise, characters and a worldbuolding able to hold by itself, not relying on looking for others pitty for their perpsnal lifes. Red being the worst one as the protagonist allmost feels like a self insert and the most expensive therapy session ever seen. A good story doesnt rely on it's messages or giving lectures to the audience, it's about the world we are getting into and then characters within

I feel like it is kind of fair to compare Luca and turning red to the other movies and to be honest chances are even if they were released in like normal circumstances they would not have been that popular Sure they can be good movies, but from the fact that you're inherently targeting a smaller audience they're never going to be as popular so the movies like that are just never going to cut it for large companies
